    Sphinx Sub Compact

I'm hoping the internals are the same as the compact in which case the spring set from CGW should work in the subcompact.
  2. Not sure I will get the subcompact by this weekend - weather delay...

    CZ97B Grip Screws

I agree, but it came with the torx and CZ wants a bunch for their screws. Not a problem now that I know - the torx bit is in my range tool kit.

    Shock buffers

OK I did it and got 1.82 inches. I took the RS out, but left the barrel in - is that correct?

    Shock buffers

Right - a full length dust cover. I will do it tonight after work. I may have to use a machinist's rule instead of a caliper - the last time I looked for the caliper I couldn't find it.

    Shock buffers

I'll see if I can locate my Vernier calipers. Can you suggest a way to measure it? I can easily lock it back with a mag in with room to spare before it touches the buffer. Should I measure how far it travels after locking back?

    Shock buffers

I have a Sphinx SDP compact and it has a built-in rubber buffer that is about 1/4" thick. It is the softest shooting 9mm I own and it has never had any issues with jamming of any kind. I like it so much I've ordered the subcompact version which also has the built-in buffer. Being built-in, I don't think it shortens the stroke...
  8. It depends on what it's being compared to I guess. I think in the CZ line it is best compared to a RAMI and the SDP Compact is best compared to a Compact/P-01/PCR/P-07. A stock RAMI is going for ~$650 in my neck of the woods (may find it cheaper online - I think I've seem them for $589 somewhere) and then you have to invest around $130 or so in parts to get a SA as crisp as the Sphinx with a short reset. The Sphinx can be had online for as little as $800 plus transfer fees/shipping (free shipping with some dealers and I pay $10 for xfer fees) - let's say $850. The Sphinx Compact spring kit from CGW is $20 to lighten the DA (I'm betting it will fit the subcompact since they are essentially the same gun with different barrel lengths). So for more or less $870 for the Sphinx and for more or less $780 (if you do the parts install yourself) for the RAMI we have a difference of $90 - $160 between two similar guns. The built-in buffer, high undercut trigger guard, step up in quality and improved grip ergonomics (to me) of the Sphinx is well worth the extra investment. I left out polishing as both weapons are similar platforms and can probably be equally improved in this area. I'm betting that before it is all said and done CGW will be selling an extended firing pin so the double action can be made as light as a CZ. If you don't shop around you can pay as much as $1050 for the Sphinx though. The above statements are based on my assumption that the RAMI is basically like all other CZ products I have experienced (I have only held the RAMI in my LGS and never even dry fired one). Bottom line is it is a matter of personal preference and how much value one places on high quality workmanship in a firearm.
  9. OK I will, but I'm no good with pictures...
  10. After having the Sphinx SDP compact for about 3-weeks now I went ahead and sprung for a Sphinx Subcompact. I had to do something with my tax return, you know? I was influenced by a review on Sigforum by Prefontaine and by the quality of the SDP. It should arrive at my LGS for me to pick up tomorrow night. I'm excited!

    CZ97B Grip Screws

Thanks for the help everyone. I am embarrassed to say that it was indeed the T20 torx that did the job. My driver is a ratcheting driver and I apparently had it set on "neutral" so that it wouldn't turn anything either direction - the torx tool wasn't slipping, the driver's ratchet was "slipping". My bad eyes and bad lighting led me to believe it was the wrong torx side. I apologize for wasting everyone's time, but it's nice to know you all are so helpful. Thanks again.
  12. The CGW adjustable sear makes fitting the safety a breeze.

    CZ97B Grip Screws

They are CK tools from Germany and this is the first time I've used them. They were definitely not cheap though. I'll need to look and see what the next size I have is when I get home today - they may jump from T20 to T30 or something (should have looked at the size of the next one up). I don't have a lot of them (6 torx bits). T20 is too small and the next size up won't fit in (too big). They are part of a small set of tools with a driver...

    CZ97B Grip Screws

I have a T20 and it is just a hair too small to turn the screw - slips.

    CZ97B Grip Screws

Yes, aluminum grips and torx is the word I couldn't think of when I said "star". Do they make torx in metric - my set didn't have the correct size.

    CZ97B Grip Screws

Does anyone know what tool I need to remove the grip screws on a new 97B? They appear to be some kind of star like socket head screw, but when I tried to use my star tools to remove it they fell in between sizes. I'm guessing they are metric? Thanks
  17. Sounds like what I do - pull it out, clean it off, then put back in

    Rami P01 hybrid

The XCR sounds more sensible to me as I don't like the short handle on the RAMI, but I like the shorter barrel.

    Sphinx Sub Compact

There's a review on Sigforums by Prefontaine where it's compared to a Glock 19. The grip is just a little bit shorter than the G19 (you can get your whole hand on the grip without an outlandishly long mag extension) and the barrel/slide looks to be about 5/8ths of an inch shorter than the G19. I'd say the Sphinx subcompact is bigger than the RAMI.
  20. I use simple reader glasses for precision target shooting so I can see the sights instead of bifocals. I use the lowest magnification that lets me see both sights reasonably clear so the target isn't too blurry. Maybe take out the one lens (non-dominant eye) for distance. Best if your readers are also safety glasses. Even before I had to wear glasses either the sights or the target would fuzz out depending on which I was focusing. I'm not sure it is possible to keep everything in focus simultaneously even with young eyes.
