  1. Bart, are you serious? If so was there a determination about FMJ vs Lead bullets, velocities, minimum distances from steel, angle of steel to the shooter??? I'm curious from my clubs standpoint as we have a moratorium on steel until it is resolved in consultation with the NRA. Thanks, Racine
  2. I own 2 pairs of Exceptions with 6 different types of clip ons and in the last 4 years have not seen any distortion in any of these lenses. I use them for shooting, fishing, cycling, running, work and am a stickler for clarity. These have to be my clearest lenses. I've owned Oakleys, Revos, Bolles, etc... so I don't go cheap on the vision dept.
  3. What John said. The Pelicans do leak and will break with rough handling. The starlights are made for rough tumbling and are really water tight or proof with pressure relief valves. I have experience flying several times with 2 guns in a Starlight. Last two times I landed and my case was soaking wet but the insides were dry both times. You can get the starlights with wheels or add them on later. Starlight costs roughly the same and are American made.

    H&K USP 45 basepads

Dangucci, keep me posted on the Taylor Freelances with the Dawson followers. Getting 17 is pretty good (+1 in the pipe). One nice trait of the HK 45 mags are that they are tough and ultra reliable if you have good springs. My experience with them though is that they are most reliable with 200gr RN bullets as 230gr bullets get a bit heavy and you will need to keep your mags clean and well lubed. Shoot well!
  5. You can check out your Mk23 owners brochure, call HK USA or browse Wolff to get their OEM recommendation. They used to send you a catalog if you ordered some springs. Those should be stronger than the standard USP recoil springs to stand up to the 45 Super.
  6. Yeah, you really have to watch those "fiendly" RO's . Sorry, I just couldn't help myself, but I agree with your post. This is a great and exceptionally well-run match, and the match workers, including RO's and everyone else, make it a pleasure to shoot. Pun intended but not derogatory ; ^) Glad you enjoyed it as well.

    Hope that runs for you...
  8. Big THANKS AND CONGRATS to Big John H. for putting on a fun and well run match. There were so many match details that went very well enough for everyone to have a real good time. I sure did. The RO's were all very helpful and fiendly and I felt this was one match I NEED to shoot every year. I was (work)stressed coming into the match and totally laid back Saturday and Sunday PM. Thanks for everything you do Magnolia R&P, John and all the unnamed volunteers. Racine
  9. I've shot & reloaded 40sw for over 12 years and had my first squib a few months ago on my 550. It was my fault I'm sure. I just finished a major match but I did case gauge all my ammo and came up with 5 rounds in 500 reloaded that did not fit and could have been a problem during the match. A buddy at the match did have a case separation that blew out the entire bottom of the case. He did not case gauge his match ammo. He elected to dig out the hollow case from the chamber and still finished the stage albeit in 60 sec. I believe the 40 is still a high pressure even with 165+ power factor so I will be more diligent in inspecting cases I shoot at matches like I used to do. It probably wouldn't hurt to inspect crimps and OALs as well on a statistical basis. I know I want a new gun but the KB method is not the way to do it.
  10. YES YOU CAN! Dan, you will need a special C-Clip tool/pliers to remove it and then replace with similar spring from Wolff. HK recommends you do this but call them for the exact round count. If you don't use that clip pliers you'll break the C-clip. Go easy on it on removal.
  11. For Moly, per "precision bullet" website 50/50 vinegar/hydrogen peroxide will work I liked the Precision Moly bullets but my biggest problem was their ability to supply me where I live so I moved back to the Bear Creek for now. I will comment this about Glock factory barrels or hexagonal/polygonal barrels; they tend to lead more even with moly coated lead bullets. This I've seen with all my 40 glock and 45 hk barrels. That recipe for vinegar/peroxide is caustic enough to etch your glock barrel(did so to two of my G35s and my HK45acp)so use care and only for 10" if at all. Going to the KKM G35 barrel has minimized any leading whatsoever. I've also read someone recommend that vinegar/peroxide solution for stainless barrels only so use caution. HTH... Racine
  12. PNG, U I hear what you're saying here. So here I am getting back into the swing of things shooting primarily at 2 different clubs. I finally get a friend to get me on a club's mailing list for match notification/cancellations and all goes well for 2 years. A month ago with nice weather, I head on down not receiving any notices by email only to find the club locked solid on such a nice day(1 hr of driving, okay I go play golf). The next month again no notices but I call someone who says the match is on. Somehow someone entered my name into the computer without me there so when I show up I get logged on again (without any idea). At the end of the match, the director calls me inside to tell me my name and scores won't show up but that my classifier goes in though. Either way he can't make changes so I don't know where I really stand?! I'm a little peeved but bite my tongue and help tear down. SHOULD I ASK FOR MY MATCH FEE BACK or just suck it up as a fubar of a day??? What's the right thing to do? The computer man/match director states correcting this will take 20+ minutes and doesn't want to hold anyone over at 1400hrs. I've been shooting USPSA for 14 yrs and never had so much fodder show up like this at any club. What's a reasonable shooter supposed to do? Racine
  13. True but the MPro7 does oxidize and develops a white precipitate that settles so I'm only buying smaller quantities of the stuff. I can't vouch for the potency (which to me seems to drop when I see this) but it is still a very good cleaner. The 50% Peroxide and 50% Vinegar is very effective BUT corrosive enough to etch your barrel when left for longer than 20"( done this to a glock 35 factory barrel twice!). I think I've learned to use it for only 10-15" max. The Moly coating and corrosion is an issue in rifle barrels due to the velocities of rifle bullets. I've read that those velocities turn moly into an abrasive compound and that is hydrophilic as well. There is another product I've used sparingly that I'm willing to try more made by Bore Tech(see here; http://www.boretech.com/docs/chemicalguide.shtml). It smells citrus like and the name is Moly Magic. Good discussion on this. Racine

Here's a file I found after some digging. When CJS stopped making these pads Docrak stepped up and improved on the design to eliminate the powertool look. Oopss, seems I can't load this file here. email me a 3gfun@cableone.net if you want it and I'll forward it to you.
  15. Several good points such as checking the club bylaws. I just spoke to the NRA rep for competition on NRA AP and he was surprised about these issues. His comments made it clear that you can shoot any kind of ammunition short of magnums and rifle at canted steel plates. Thanks everyone for your input, it will be used. Racine
  16. Okay, that was more specific. As a non-machinist type I tend to ask more questions someone with gunsmith abilities wouldn't. Thank you for helping. Racine

Thank you Bruce for many years of enjoyable shooting sessions with that USP Expert. It ran rings around that old Para built by that self proclaimed "...1911 master gunsmith west of the Miss..." I ran into in Denver. Your modifications last and work...
  18. It is so darn accurate how could you not love this pistol. A writer once wrote that it had taken over the mantle that the Sig 210 dominated for so long. I have shot mine for 7 years with out much of a hiccup besides my own reloading faults. I had this guru Bruce Gray turn mine into a Limited pistol. He'll put fiber optics on front, add a jet funnel for 45acp, shorten the trigger pre travel/reset/overtravel that it is just sweet. Still won't compare to a 1911 trigger but very close. I got mag extensions from a machinist named docrak that allows me +5 for 17+ 1(maybe hard to find now). I have to scramble to keep up with those other tupperware types carrying 20+ 1 but it's fun. In short I love this HK much better than my original HK USP45. The only limitations are in the bore axis and sometimes unpredictable muzzle flip(double recoil spring) which can but takes practice to get used to.
  19. I belong to this local club that used to have an active NRA Act. Pistol program but the match coordinator backed out after about 7 years due to friction with a club official who oversees the programs. One of this official's tenets is that we cannot use FMJ ammo on the plate racks as he worries the ricochet comes back and can travel 50-70yds and lands on one of our adjacent neighbors mobile home. My response has been to tell him that many shooters have used FMJ for years at these matches that he just hasn't noticed. Another comment I made was that for the sport to grow more shooters we need to be less selective within reason(no 357/44mag etc.) to ammo selection. Many new shooters do not reload and thus can only get wally world factory FMJ ammo. With this restriction many are staying away. Any ideas from anyone? I'm a USPSA shooter that uses these matches for practice. My comment is that as long as we are greater than 10-11 yards away it is not an issue. This guy is a very active member of the NRA who has been shooting for a very looong time. Any suggestions on how to handle this old timer("...pistols are meant to shot one handed, otherwise they would have been called 'hands guns"). : ^ ) Thanks, Racine
  20. John, The phone's cheap, it's the plan that costs a small fortune. My family plan with unlimited texting is already about $1000/year for 3 of us. Going to the I phone boosts that up to over $1200/year and probably more the way my wife and son use their phones. Not to mention that the area in McComb where I live doesn't even have 3g available!? I think living in a bigger city sees benefits of that phone where you get 3g, GPS, internet, etc... I just need a phone and prefer to talk to people or see what's around me rather than glue myself to a small computer like I see a lot of folks do. My brother in Denver is so wired on his I phone he controls the volume, the music, the formats of his home stereo system from his I phone. We play guess the artist, song, album, at christmas which he picks from his phone. Too high tech for me. Someday I'll learn to be more tech savy, someday...
  21. Suff, Is there anyway you or anyone can post pics of this mod so I can see what I have to do? I asked my gunsmith( a good 1911 & rifle smith BTW) but he declined it as "...not doable..." with the synthetic stock? I've got a regular metal band saw and a dremel but more detail would be appreciated. I know it's doable since my old Remy smith in Oregon did it to my 1100. Thanks for any help you can offer. Racine

    H&K USP 45 basepads

Aaron, I think you'll have a great deal of difficulty getting these short of making them yourself or finding a prototype to copy. You might try to find someone who has some older aftermarket Para Ordnance P14 mag basepads as those would fit the HK metal mags. I tried them but had limited capacity(3-4?). If you can track down CJS to sell you some old basepads that would be your best bet. He's out of California somewhere but has slowed down due to some health issues. This would be your best option. A poster on the HK forums named Docrak took some of these CJS pads to modify and actually made several that he sold till the second invasion of Iraq happened and he got tied up doing contract work for Uncle Sam. Either the CJS or the Docrak pads hold 4-5 rounds in 45acp. This is all I run on mine and I can get 17+1 for my USP which I don't mind so much since I love this gun. Good luck tracking down CJS. Racine
  23. Thanks. Can you elaborate? Did you take some plastic off the rear of the butt stock then re-fit the recoil pad to fit that new sized opening? If so was the cut straight down or did you cut at an angle? I spoke to the FN customer assist and he mentioned not taking more than 3/4"-1" and being careful as the recoil pad has to fit the stock... He added that any other stocks would not be available till next summer/fall. I appreciate your help... Racine
  24. 00Bullitt, Have you attempted this modification with success? I've contacted FN for shorter stocks but they do not have anything planned besided that pistol grip which will be longer. If yes to my question, any caveats about the mod and how to proceed? Thanks for your contribution. Racine
  25. I agree, I don't know if that could ever grow on me. I prefer the look of the Benelli or Speedfeed pistol stock.
