  1. This about sums it up for me as well. Oh yeah! Shooting with my son of course. Well I like shooting with your son too. But he is getting to be too good.
  2. Steathlyblagga and I agree on something! (ok we agree on most things). And I saw StealthyBlagga come OH SO CLOSE to giving someone (not me!) a procedural for coaching at SMM3G. While I'm generally against coaching, I too can't stand to watch a new shooter simply struggle away until their time runs out. I will call shots when ROing shooters AT THE CLUB LEVEL. That being said, I'm 100% against coaching at major matches for everybody. It will never be consistently given and you're really screwing the other competitors. It is supposed to be a match not a hoedown.
  3. 1) More shooting in, under and around cars - or car-like props! 2) Horner scoring 3) Crazy ass Kyle Lamb North American 3 Gun stages (support side shooting, sideways shooting, crawling in mud, shooting out of moving vehicles, target recognition problems, and the Iron Man El Prez!) 4) More aerial shotgun targets 5) Setting the rifle stages up so that the mid-range targets (inside of 200 or so) cannot be engaged prone - Sorry Jesse!
  4. 1) Scoring delays 2) Vast seas of wide open targets with 2 hits anywhere scoring 3) Slugs past 75 (cmon guys 50! that's pretty close) 4) Unpainted rifle steel/ Rifle steel that presents the iron sight shooters with substantially different target presentations (i.e. the aformentioned reactive rifle targets in the shade) 5) Too many stages with all 3 guns which equals delays
  5. I don't think the dot gives a huge advantage but it gives an advantage nonetheless. Pistols have such a short sight radius compared to rifles, the dot's advantage is more pronounced on a handgun. It's a lot easier to shoot on the move and easier to make more technical shots with the dot. I think the dot is actually more important than the comp BUT you can have both. But you have young eyes!
  6. Shoot some groups at 200 and 300. Then do it again. Then again. Don't overlook the value of just learning how to build an accurate shot. Then start doing some short 6 rd drills on targets at 200 and 300 shooting prone, reverse kneeling, off rests etc etc. Then do it again. and again ......
  7. Daniel, Robbie J and Bruce Piatt have convinced me to give it a try. Robbie and Daniel run cutdown versions. Bruce said he is going to roll with the 26 in barrel as am I. I won't say they're perfect but I'm sure they're better than the 1100\1187 series. Greg B had a major problem with his on stage 1 when the firing pin retaining pin came loose looking the gun up. Daniel seems to really like his but he is letting the poor mag tube rust away. Daniel clean that poor thing!
  8. Tony Holmes seems to like his. I'm awaiting mine!
  9. No, I want my sights more or less permenantly attached to the gun.
  10. Just a few observations about shotguns from the ProAm. I was on Squad 9 which had 8 shooters. Out of that 8, only 2 shooters had 100% reliable shotguns throughout the match: Daniel Horner's VersaMax and my old Triangle Shooting Sports Benelli M1 (a gun which royally screwed me at the Northwest Multigun). The other 6 included 2 VersaMaxes, 3 Benellis (all M2s I think), and 1 Saiga. I'm not sure what this says except that shotguns are inherently unreliable, regardless of brand. Another observation. The ProAm (at least on the Pro Side) really required interchangeable chokes. There were some fairly tight no shoot problems that I would have shuddered to face with a cylinder or even skeet choke. Another observation: shooters will spend a gabillion dollars on gear, guns, glasses, mag pouches, match rifle bullets, cleats, hydration systems, travel, video cameras, IPad ballistic programs etc etc but will then skimp and shoot the cheapest ass shotgun ammo that they can find, even at a major match! One last observation (and a personal one at that!): even shotguns have to aimed!
  11. I would get an XS Express rear sight and a fiber optic front sight.
  12. Sorry Kurt. Choate it is. I also left out facial hair. One cannot shoot irons without facial hair.
  13. Kurt relies on the following: 1) Merrell shoes and Jeans (or shorts) No silly 5.11 for him. 2) an ancient The Wilderness instructor belt 3) more ancient California Comp Shell Caddies (sorry, it is Choate) 4) yet even more ancient ugly camo Benelli (although now he may finally have a new one) 5) REALLY thick glasses (Decot??) 6) cheapest ass XM193 that he can find 7) the ever present Ching sling 8) sweet JP rifle with extended front sight (skinny post), No silly fancy stock either. A good ole A2. 9) Benny Hill Long Slide Fat Free .40 which serves for Limited Division, 3 Gun and Concealed Carry! 10) 300 m zero You too can have gear just like Kurt Miller ..... except for the ancient Benelli!
  14. I agree more 3 gun team matches! Once a year is not enough! How about once a quarter?? How about losing a monthly pistol match and having a monthy 3 gun team match? How about Tuesday Night Team?
  15. Where was everybody when they had to cancel Limited at the USPSA Multigun Nationals? Irons were dying out. It is too bad too but that's the way it is. Not enough shooters want to compete in Iron to make it viable Division. (and this is from one of the iron sight true believers remember I shot Standard at the IPSC Euro Rifle Championship as well as iron sight at a whole host of major 3 gun matches). There are two things that can truly be said about the addition of 1X optics into " iron sight" sight division. First it has significantly grown the division, especially at the local level. Second the perceived advantage of the 1X optic over iron sights simply has not panned out. Maybe it will...... I think Kurt and I have won every major 3 gun in this division in 2011 yet no one seems to want to believe us. Knowing how to shoot your rifle and having good zeroes are what wins. I appreciate the theory that a 1X should be superior but my match performance and drills just don't show it. But maybe I will mount a delta point beside my Pris to drive everybody crazy.
  16. My point is that this is not a game changer in the slightest. I can understand the theory that a rifle with a set of irons, an Eotech and a Deltapoint on top of the Eotech is no longer "Limited" But it is also irrelevant. If people want to mount multiple sets of iron sights on their shotgun, should we ban that in the rules out of some vague sense of disapproval? Or homie style sights on their pistols to back up their Bo mars? Or Vertical forward grips? I doubt a ban on those things would get much traction as they don't aid the shooter. That is what I am saying here. Multiple 1X sighting systems is not going to make a rifle any more competitive in this division. In fact, I will bet that the shooters that have multiple 1X sighting systems are actually less competitive.
  17. On an IPSC Open rifle, I would have a bipod. And it would be a "turnable" one not a fixed. My bipod rapid deployment device has always been string or rope strung between the bipod legs. I don't care for the Magpul angled forward grip. I do see a lot of newer shooters have trouble with them when shooting off barricades. I don't care for forward grips of any sort on a competition rifle and neither do most of the top shooters in the U.S. or Europe. Take a look at Raine's rifle. Pretty simple: bipod, free float tube, tweaked JP "tank" brake, Swaro 1-6X. He does not even have a red dot nor does he have a forward grip of any sort.
  18. 1. Yes, a .45 pistol will work just fine, and is legal for all divisions. 2. The minimum team round count will be 45 pistol, 93 shotgun birdshot, 1 shotgun slug and 78 rifle... a total of 217 rounds per team. This is based on some assumptions I have made about balance between shotgun and pistol on one of the stages, so the actual ratio of those rounds could change depending on team tactics. It also assumes no misses My team plans to fire at least 500 rounds!
  19. It's totally irrelevant. Bolt as many 1X sights on your rifle as you want. Kurt and I will still be beating you.
  20. JP. Everyone I have ever had was 1/2 MOA. 2 have been significantlly better than that.
  21. I can answer that one probably better than anybody as I've done a great deal of competition with both. In my not so humble opinion, a good set of irons is actually slightly superior to the current crop of red dots and slightly inferior to the Prismatic (only with the DCD reticle not the Turkey plex) in the typical 3 gun match setting. The only caveat to that would be matches with a great deal of off center/sideways/SBU positions OR shooting in low light conditions where the dots do offer some real advantages. I find it easier to shoot an MGM plate at 200 or even 300 with a skinny extended radius front sight than with a pixelated Eotech dot or a 2 MOA Aimpoint. Likewise I find it slightly easier to hit that same plate with the 1 MOA dot in the Pris than with the irons. The Pris is also significantly better in dawn/dusk diminshed light conditions than either irons or the red dots especially the Eotech as it transmits light a lot better - although the Aimpoint is not bad in this regard. NOW if we were shooting a match with a bunch of targets past 300 AND Leupold improves the reticle in the Prismatic, it's advantages will increase a bit more.
  22. It may be perceived as a growing tech race (one in which I am somewhat deeply invovled in with Leupold as we are trying to improve the Prismatic both as a competition sight and a duty sight) BUT have any of you guys beat Kurt "Mr. Irons" Miller with your uber 1X optical sights. Most of these perceived advantages are in our minds and not in our scores.
  23. The slippery slope already exists .... And always has. I have NEVER EVER shot unmodified iron sights in a high-power match, practical rifle match or 3 gun match yet nobody complained. If improved reticles are verboten shouldn't non-stock iron sights be verboten as well?
