LowryWeaponsSystems
At what point do I stop and say my frame and slide are preped good enough for hard chrome? Should all my surfaces be perfectly smooth/sanding scratch free or will the company (APW in my case) do this for me and thats why they charge so much? Sarge
I just sent mine to APW as is. They prepped and chromed it. It cost me the listed price only

pjb45
Actually, it might depend on what type of finish you want-brushed, polished or mirror?

chuckstur
How about the life of hard chrome in a kydex holster that gets a lot of use?
CHA-LEE
Hard chrome will resist kydex holster wear very well. Much better than most other "Fashion" color coatings like Cerakote. IonBond is also very durable, but its also black. If you want a very durable "Silver" coating then Hard Chrome is the only way to go.

Look at the pictures in these posts. The single stack was hard chromed in 2002 with what we called a "Norco finish". Durable but not bling. Intermittent use in kydex over the last 15 years has only yielded some areas where the matte finish has been polished somewhat smooth. Still a solid chrome finish. Super durable! ACree
Make sure your finisher is knowledgeable about 1911 and 2011 and bearing surfaces. The last thing you want is to send a tight fitting slide and frame to a finisher that media blasts or brushes the bearing surfaces and increases tolerances.
