Dr.J
Good afternoon gents, I'm beginning to reload for my 9mm STI Trojan and S&W Shield and am looking suggestions for a mild cast bullet practice load. I've read other threads regarding powder selection, but none seem to furnish the information I'm looking for. I will be loading mixed brass cases, WW primers, and a 125 gr. hard cast bullet. I currently have 700-X, Titegroup, and Bullseye on hand. Will any of these powders work, if so which one, if not which powders do you recommend? I'm looking for an accurate practice load, i.e., reaching a power factor is not important. Specific load information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dr.J
mikeg1005
I wouldn't recommend titegroup... many people report leading caused by the powder burning rather hot due to its nitro content. Mike.
mike l m
Bulleye is good just too dirty for me, have used in 45 ACP. Have not used Titegroup. A good solid load for a 124 gr rnd lead bullet is 4.2 grains of 231. You may have to start at 3.8 and work up a bit and the oal is what works in the STI 9MM. Good luck, keep your powder dry and shoot straight. Mike

Steve RA
Try Clays, 3.0Gr is a good starting point, loads can go higher.

Bob DuBois
I like Solo 1000 with heavier bullets but Solo cn be a pain light flake powder that doesn't meter well. Lot of people like titegroup. I had good luck with Red Dot and Winchester 231.
Bshooter
I am currently using Ramshot Competition with my lead bullets. Great for 9mm and 45. Have not used it for 40s but heard it is just as good.

Ray S
I loaded some 147s up with 231. Hope to try them out soon Edited February 9, 2013 by Ray S
Scootertheshooter
I have tried 147 with 231/wst and something else I can't remember but settled on solo 1000 very soft shooting. It seems to work the best with lead for me anyway. Not very smoky at all and extremely accurate
parisite
700X and Bullseye will do you a fine job for cast bullet loads. That's what you have so use them.
Dave C
WST....wst.....WST....and WST. Very little smoke. Just don't try to push them too fast.
steviesterno
clays works amazingly well for 9mm. I had a really sweet set up with 9mm that was no recoil, no smoke, and just squeaked in with minor. Check your load books and give it a go! anachronism
In most instances, cast bullets seem to give more favorable results with slower burning powders. Every combination is a rule unto itself, but my experiences seem to bear this out repeatedly.
judgecrater
700X and Bullseye will do you a fine job for cast bullet loads. That's what you have so use them. While a little dirty, hard to beat the accuracy of Bullseye for 9mm and 45acp.
Nimitz
+1 for WST, I've shot over 20,000 124g lead SnS hard cast bullets with WST at 130 PF with zero issue this past year. Agree that only stay with minor PF ...
