open17
Loaded up some Major 9 loads before Area 2 2009. Chrono'd 172 PF at 60º or so. Area 2---temp 85º-----made 165.nuthin' after 6 shots. Blamed my cheap F1 Chrony---replaced with a CED Millenium II, which was right on between home and Area 1 this year. SO---Today. Took out the Open gun for the first time in a year. Had some Atlanta Arms .355 Super and the leftover ammo from Area 2. Temperature low forties. AAA ammo, 1355-1360 fps. Just what I would expect from this gun. (DANG that stuff is consistent!!) My WSF load---HOLY$#@@P---average for 5 5 shot strings---183.1 PF. Backed up another 10 feet, same results. 40º 183 PF 60º 170 PF 80º 165 PF Anybody else seen WSF have THAT MUCH reverse temperature sensitivity? Back to Silhouette or 3N37 or HS-6 or maybe try Autocomp for me! I'll save the rest of this WSF stuff for a nice hot day next August.

Well, I guess I'll put away the Glock 9 Major ammo with WSF until next summer and crack that jug of Silhouette or the 3N37 I have around. The G17 open gun is a handful at 171 pf, let alone 183 pf. Thanks for saving me the shock of cracking off that first 185 pf round during our wet and cold Pacific NW winter!!!
LPatterson
WST has the same type inverse temperature characteristics.
open17
WST has the same type inverse temperature characteristics. Sure glad that I didn't try this a week ago when it was 9º out. If it's 183 PF at 40º, the darned stuff would be what? 197 PF at 9º?? Out of a Glock Open gun that really doesn't sound like fun.

L-10_shooter
Hey Bill, Silhouette is good stuff although I have not loaded any major 9 with it. Are you going to be shooting open instead of L-10/single stack this year?
TwoShot
In my experience Silhouette is also reverse temperature sensitive. Although not to the degree you have experienced with WSF. I believe that Silhouette began life as "Winchester Action Pistol", WAP. Many years ago Win 452AA was my powder of choice for a single stack comped .45. It was also reverse temperature sensitive. I was loading for the 1990 Nationals in September at PASA. Expected cooler temps than at home, it was 90 degrees plus all week. I had enough cushion built in so there were no problems. Seems to be a common trait of some Winchester powders.

From what I've been able to learn, VihtaVuori powders seem to be quite temp stable. JimInFL

For the slew of open Glock shooters using SWF up here in Maine, we drop the powder charge by about 4 tenths starting in October until about April.. Dramatic difference. Are you going to be shooting open instead of L-10/single stack this year? L10 for points---so I can get a slot to Nationals---assuming that that works out when we find out when and where Nationals are. Rest of the matches who knows? Whatever sounds like fun.
