Chris Conley
Damn Russell you didn't run over the AK....... Very informative. Thanks for taking the time and I'll take the brass if you don't want it. Chris C Edited October 20, 2009 by Chris Conley
raz-0
Thesis: The AK type rifle is more reliable than AR15 type riflesThe Test: Fire one mag to confirm function, load rifle and bury in sand with dust cover/safety down, fire one magazine, repeat. Results: The open areas of the AK type rifle allow dirt/dust to get into the action in large quantities, preventing them fire control from functioning. While a gas piston MAY be more reliable, the AKs fire control are more prone to outside fouling than those of an AR15 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lo5WhVvtYak Thanks. That's the part of the torture tests that never seemed to get done by anyone. BTW if you want fine dust in the gun, you could always buy some diatomaceous earth. That's about as fine as it gets. J-Ho
Nice tests Russel The AK crowd are almost cultish...No amount of factual data will change their minds. Every aspect of the AK is just plain crude...its durable and very functional but not a precision instrument. The AR15 family is a precision instrument...from fit to metalurgy When every part is virtually interchangable...you know you have some pretty close numbers Soo......when are you going to bury some shotguns Jim Jim do you really want him to show you how much better a Benelli holds up? jobob
Great tests Russell! If I ever want a gun tortured I'll give you a call! My guns are like my children, and I would never abuse them like that. But it's good to know that there are medieval types like you out there, willing to put their "children" though hell, just so we know that ours are good to go! I'm going to send links to those vids (or just this thread) to some folks I know who could use some enlightenment. BTW, I 'almost' put together a gun identical to that one, but CMMG was dragging their feet on my upper, and also discontinued their lightweight barrels. So I put a 16" Bushy Superlite on my Cav lower and have a great, light AR. Don't plan to bury it, though! Keep up the good work!
jobob
Oh, I just noticed from the vids that you're a lefty. Well, that explains it! Most malfunctions with ARs are experienced by right handed shooters, so shooting it from the 'wrong' side puts some kind of unique torque on the system which counters any malfunction that may occur. Also, your breath in the ejection port obviously keeps it lubed longer than when a 'righty' is shooting!
SinistralRifleman
Finally took it apart to clean it last night. There was a lot of loose debris in the buffer tube. Given that the CAV-15 has more clearance in the buffer tube due to its structural rib system than a traditional AR15 tube, it could have aided in reliability: http://www.cavalryarms.com/dirttest/01.jpg http://www.cavalryarms.com/dirttest/02.jpg http://www.cavalryarms.com/dirttest/03.jpg http://www.cavalryarms.com/dirttest/04.jpg http://www.cavalryarms.com/dirttest/05.jpg http://www.cavalryarms.com/dirttest/06.jpg

SinistralRifleman
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v613/Tim...r12Jan08015.flv That really doesn't impress me since almost none of the dirt actually gets in the gun... azoutdoorsman
Here's the thread. It does have pics of the inside of the receiver. http://www.migeta.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4579 That is laughable. There is a little dust inside that AK, not much more, which proves there was hardly any to begin with. In the video you can see most of the dirt landing on the ground, or on his shoe. cas
Another telling and interesting video would be to pack them both full with sand and see which is quicker / easier to get running again.
Stlhead
Russell, you had better tell the fanatical AK crowd that you actually use an AK based shotgun. I hear that there have been calls for a Jihad against you for posting anti-AK hate speech. Repent your AK bashing ways before the Kalashnikov loving community starts to get ugly. jobob
A friend of mine is an AR hater. He was a Marine in 'Nam when the M16s were first issued, so I suppose he has a good reason, but he won't accept the fact that the gun has been vastly impoved since then. He's heard a few stories about malfunctions in the sandbox and thinks that is the norm. I showed him your vids, but I'm not sure if he was impressed. I'll keep working on him, though.
