2009 Nationals: Any chance of a range shuttle?

yeah me too.

It seems like it would be a good deal for someone to rent a 15 passenger van and provide shuttle service at a nominal fee to cover the costs of the van, gas, time, etc.

If you only had it at the match hotel some people would bitch because you didn't stop by their hotel. Then there is the problem of the shooting schedule with some people shooting in the morning and others in the afternoon. Is the shuttle gtoing to run for both? How about getting back from the range, there is more time with the shuttle driver sitting on his/her hands waiting for people. How about the late squad not getting off the stage until say 8:00 at night, is the driver and other shooters supposed to wait forever?

Suck it up and rent a car or find a driver before you get there.

It seems pretty straight forward to me...Rent a 15 passenger van for $150/day, lets say you schedule two runs a day for morning and pm squading. You spend the rest of the day at the range waiting for shooters to finish up and run them back a few at a time. If you get takers from hotels other then the match hotel you pick them up ahead of time. If you could get 10 people for the am and 10 people for the pm and charged them $10/day (compared to $25 per day for the rental car) you would pull in $200/day. That's barely breaking even....but if you could fill the van or make two trips you could make as much as $600 day. Not a bad day's pay when it's cash. Of course it would take some leg work to get people signed up but it's certainly doable.

In the end the passengers are looking at $40 or $50 for transportation rather then $125 to $150 + gas.

I wonder if there is a service in Las Vegas that already owns the van and just wants the chance to make the money?

None the less, I've got a rental car on reserve at the airport.

I did some research on the web and only found the airport as a source for cars. Did you find something different?

FWIW, it's way cheaper to NOT rent a car at the airport in Vegas.

Find 1-2 friends (or fellow BE'ers) to pool together to get 3 people in a car.

Done.

Good point, there's no way to make a shuttle service work in Vegas.

Step 1: Yahoo Yellow Pages

Step 2: Location = Las Vegas, NV

Step 3: Enter "Rental Car" into Search

There's about a half dozen (at least) on Fremont Street. :)

I thought about trying to rent a car 'off airport'. The trouble is that it is more hassle than it is worth, and the savings doesn't measure up for me. It is a hassle traveling to one of the 'remote' sites. None of the hotel shuttle busses are free unless you are a guest, and a taxi is more than the 'off airport' savings. The idea of taking a shuttle bus from McCarin to Freemont St, then rent a car, then drive back to The Orleans seems a little complicated. That's the whole way across town and back. Plus, you have to do the whole thing in reverse when you fly home. The only way it would really work well was if the Orleans had an in-house car rental desk, or if you were staying for a long time, and only renting a car for the match days.

I booked a rental car via priceline for $153 including taxes through Avis. They have a free airport shuttle pickup, and you don't have to go far from the match hotel. I have my own personal car, can make a run to Walmart or Cabelas, and don't have to wait on some guy that overslept.

Another point is there are the "eagar beavers" you know they wanna go to the range 3 hours before scheduled time. Then there are the "Slow pokes" or the "I gotta eat at Dennys" or "I wanna stay at the range after we are done and watch TGO"

There is less than 500 people and factor out the people like me that wanna control their destiny somewhat. Shuttle can't work. I have rented that 15 passenger van and had a great time driving to a major with 7 or so friends a couple times.

Shuttles work great when they either have a fixed schedule and route and don't deviate from it... getting from one casino, et hotel to another in Vegas is pretty easy, even lugging a range bag.

Or, like at the WS, you have a lot of shuttles and they each go when they get full. Don't get left by the last one.

You can also rent a car at most of the hotels. It might be a tad more than the airport but you avoid pickup and drop hassles and you end up with it only for the actual time you will be using it. But be advised that most of the hotels now charge for parking and the parking lot is usually way in the back which means that for some of the srip hotels it is a full block from your room.

I just checked with the Orleans, they dont charge for parking. The person I spoke with stated that most of the casino's in Vegas dont charge for parking and if they do you can get your parking slip validated. As far as looking at the hotel on an ariel view, the parking doesnt look to far from the hotel, or at least from maybe a couple thousand feet up anyway. LOL! H!

Hey guys. Ray Witham here in Vegas. I'm pretty sure you're out of luck with the shuttle deal. The Orleans isn't that far from the range. If you really want to get as close as you can, book a room at Red Rock Casino. It's literally five minutes from the range. It's very sporty to boot. Email me if you guys need anything.
