sperman
Does anyone know of a good source for low volumes of silicon carbide? McMaster Carr has 10 lb bags, which would probably do every gun I own and then some.
kevin c
I got a small container at a hardware store - it's basically what they mix into the paint they put down as nonskid surfacing. Edited June 24, 2009 by kevin c

kmitchl
See if you can find a place locally that sells industrial sand blasting supplies. You are looking for Black Beauty blasting grit. The place I got mine had samples of everything they sell in bins so you could determine what is suitable. I seem to remember a 50# bag being around $8. They may have a broken bag they would sell at a discount. Throw away or share with others what you don't need. While you are there pick up some ground corn cobb or walnut shells for tumbler media. CMV
Harbor Freight has it
shred
Do you want Silicon Carbide or just some sharp sandy bits? Spark-plug cleaners use it and as said above, Harbor Fright and others carry it. They also have small quantities of Aluminum Oxide and some other abrasives that might work as well and be easier to locate.
larry cazes
My other passion is blowing glass. I use SiC grit for coldworking glass and get it from HIS Glassworks. They are at http://www.hisglassworks.com/ and sell it in lots of different grades. Edited June 24, 2009 by larry cazes
