SA Friday
OK, there is a lot of info in various threads floating around on this topic. I am going to test Solo 1000 in 40 S&W with various bullets and post my results in this thread. I am testing the loads out of two guns, an STI Edge 5" and a Benny Hill Fat Free 6", and I will post the results from both guns. I currently only have Black Bullet International 180gr bullets (180 Masterblasters for all you who have been around for a while). I tested these today. BTW, I weighted every individual charge in these rounds to ensure I was getting correct results untainted by the powder metering poorly. The SD's and spreads were scary small so I will skip them. 180gr BBI OAL 1.190 mixed brass WSP's 4.5gr Solo 1000 STI 5" Average Vel: 908 PF: 163 BHFF 6" Average Vel: 936 PF: 168.5 4.6gr Solo 1000 STI 5" Average Vel: 915 PF: 164.8 BHFF 6" Average Vel: 950 PF: 171 4.7gr Solo 1000 STI 5" Average Vel: 929 PF: 167.2 BHFF 6" Average Vel: 963 PF: 173.3 4.8gr Solo 1000 STI 5" Average Vel: 946 PF: 172 BHFF 6" Average Vel: 970 PF: 174.6 All of the rounds had more than acceptable accuracy. All of the rounds did not show high pressure. 4.5 to 4.7 had a little flattening, but no flattening of the round edges of the primer. 4.8 showed a tad more pressure, but still no rounding of the primer edge. 4.7 and 4.8 cycled the BHFF slide better than the two lighter rounds. The two lighter charges seemed a tad sluggish. I can see why 165's would be preferred by many 6" shooters. Smoke was there but minimal. The amount would not even get close to affecting a fast stand-n-shoot. I have 170gr Precisions on order to test, but we will see when those arrive. I will have 180gr Montana Golds after this weekend to test also. I'll post the results as I test.
waxman
One thing to remember about Solo 1000. I called accurate, about differences in the way some batches of solo looked. They told me that Solo has been made by at least 3 different companies in the last few years. You can find out where by looking at the sticker on the bottom of the container. The reason I mention this, is because I started shooting 4.3 grains last year, and it made major, with a 180. This year, I needed 4.5 to do the same thing. There is alot of deviations in this powder so you have to always start light and work your way up, watching your chrono and pressure signs. Just a little fYI. JakeMartens
I have been trying Solo 4.8-4.9 grains with 180 grain Black Bullet International gave me a 171 power factor out of my 5inch Brazo's at A6
ben b.
There is alot of deviations in this powder so you have to always start light and work your way up, watching your chrono and pressure signs. Just a little fYI. I'm on my second 8# jug, and the 2nd is noticeably faster than the first was. I cut .2 gr off each of my my 9mm loads, about that off my .40 load, and left the .45 load alone though it does chrono a bit faster. I am glad I started low with the new jug and tested. 4.8gr Solo 1000STI 5" Average Vel: 946 PF: 172 This is almiost exactly what I'm getting thru a 4" barrel. And I really love a tight SD, the way I love a nice, tight...well, I love it. So don't be coy...
MoNsTeR
What is Solo 1000 like physically? Flake, flattened ball, stick, etc.? Dense like AA#5 or fluffy like Clays?
waxman
What is Solo 1000 like physically? Flake, flattened ball, stick, etc.? Dense like AA#5 or fluffy like Clays? Most of the time it is like Gray clays. I have one older container that is almost black, and the flakes are curled. Most all of the new stuff is Round gray fluffy cute little flakes. SA Friday
What is Solo 1000 like physically? Flake, flattened ball, stick, etc.? Dense like AA#5 or fluffy like Clays? It's a Guncotton based gray flake powder. It's, well... Here: It's in the red cap. It's about the same consistancy as Clays.

I ran the 180 BBI reloads today at a local 6 stage match out of my BHFF. Flawless. Accuracy was awesome and smoke was equal to WWB.
ben b.
Anybody else having to run this much to make PF? I had to run 4.84 gr of S1000 of one lot to make >170PF thru a 4" barrel. The next lot I could drop a grain or 2.

Unless you have an in with the manufacturer, you're wait will be long. I ordered 170's a month ago and haven't seen them to date. If I had, load development for a BHFF would be pretty darn easy for you right now.

Primers and brass looked good , going to add one more tenth of grain. The good news has been the faster I push this bullet the more accurate it gets. Merlin Orr
I really like the 180s but the 170s are a better match for the 6" guns IMHO. Wish they had a 165 Precision and I would try them..... I think as a "general rule" ~.3 less powder needed with a 6" barrel than is required with a 5". Not a huge amount but perhaps a little less up and down when the gun goes bang. SA Friday
Got to the range today to chrono some Montana Gold bullets over Solo 1000 and tinkered with some TG and N320 too. 180 FMJ MG 1.19 OAL WSP primers mixed brass 4.7gr Solo 1000 Edge 858 fps 154 pf BHFF 872 fps 156.9 pf 4.8gr Solo 1000 Edge 880 fps 154 pf BHFF 903 162.5 pf 180 FMJ MG 1.19 OAL WSP Mixed brass 4.5gr Titegroup Edge 861 fps 154.9pf BHFF 887 fps 159.6 pf 180 FMJ MG 1.19 OAL WSP Mixed Brass 4.9gr N320 Edge 875 fps 157.5 pf BHFF 889 fps 160 pf I used these loads based on others from BE and my own experience with moly and copper jacketed bullets. MG's are with out a doubt powder hungry. I suspect .2 to .3 gr on each of the three powders to make 170ish pf with the MG's. The Solo 1000 felt the best of the three to shoot. N320 was next and (I was actually shocked and guessed I would like it the best) TG didn't feel good at all to me. None were close to max based on pressure signs.
