What did I buy? -open 9x21

I picked up a barely used Tanfoglio open gun -AT A GUN STORE- the other day for a whopping $450. It has CAT. 5388 stamped next to proof marks on the frame, drilled and tapped on both sides with a weaver rail mounted on the left, the square triggerguard is checkered underneath, the grip and backstrap have fine raised checkering, the frame is silver, slide and the 3 port comp are both black. It looks a lot like a newer Gold Team, but without the fancy comp and grips. I was wondering about how old the gun is? My best guess is late 90's. I usually shoot CZs, but couldn't pass this up at the price. That's an Sp-01 mag stuck in the gun, click in like it was made for it.

nice find..

looks like an older Gold Team..is the mainspring long or short?? the older models used a longer mainspring, newer ones a very short one.

back in the 90s around the time the P9 was doing well..EAA imported two models..a silver team and a gold team. since it fits the Sp01 mag..its seems to be build on the small frame which EAA does not import anymore. the newer guns that EAA imports are all built around the large frame.

for $450..wow..nice deal..

Excellent find, flat trigger, small frame should be a nice little open gun besides the 9x21 brass... I have one like that i was building for fun bit a smaller comp.

What caliber is it?

Here's mine in 9x21.

I didn't even bargin with the guy. This gun was priced at $700 with a bushnell holosight. I asked how much without it, guy said "$450... cash... today only." I couldn't get to the bank fast enough. I thought he'd change his mind before I got back. I was practically giddy about getting the gun for that little. It can't have had more than a few hundred rounds down the pipe, if that.

It has a short spring, less than 2 inches that angles toward the trigger, unlike my CZs that run down the back of the grip and are much longer. I wasn't thrilled about it being 9x21, but I reload so it isn't a big deal. I had a $50 gift certificate I won at an IDPA match last year from Starline....so 500 pieces of 9x21 cost me just $23.50. This is my first tanfoglio, and my first open gun. It also is marked EAA Hieliah, FL (however it's spelled!) When did they move to their previous location (Cocoa Beach...I think).

I'm friends with a CZ team shooter, he's going to disown me for shooting a Tanfo in competition (I'm too poor to afford a custom CZ open gun!) I've even gotten a tour of the factory from the CZ team open shooter Martin Kamenicek.

Rusty,

What a great deal! And, I really like your user name. Will this do?

Welcome to the forum,

Not my favorite, but drinking any Czech beer on tap in Prague is my version of heaven. Pilsner Urquell is about all I can get hold of where I live, but Bernard is one of my favorites.

Nice gun! Congrats.

With the MUCH lower power factor we have today, that gun should last a long, long time. If it does not have it, you might want an EGW hardened slide stop pin for it.

Oh, and Mr. Hathcock was born very close to where I live.....

The sp-o1 mags fit, but not as nicely as factory mags. You could have feeding issues with them, could. Henning has an x-long firing pin he developed for the small frame as well. I'm using it in my 9x21.

Wow, $450, great find
