Range Bag Setup

Hello everyone,

I am sitting here making sure I have everything ready for my first match this weekend and I came across an interesting problem. I purchased a dillon range bag and I can't seem to figure out where I want everything to go in the bag.

I know the reloading room thread went for a while, so I was wondering if anyone could post a picture of what their range bag looks like fully loaded...perhaps I might get inspired :D

Thanks,

zach

Zach,

I doesn't matter so much where you put everything, as long as you have everything that you need. Generally, you'll put the things that you need to access the most often (boxes of ammo) in the most accessible place (middle of the main portion of the bag - keeps the bag balanced too).

I found that, over the last year since I started IPSC, the contents of my bag have increased as I learned that I needed different things. Here is my current packing check list that I run through just before putting the bag in the car:

Ammunition

Batteries

Belt

Binoculars

Camera

Case Gauge

Cleaning Cloth

Cotton Wool

Ear Muffs

Gun

Gun Cover

Gun Registration Papers

Hat

Holster

IPSC Id Card

Lens Cleaner and Cloth

Magazine Brush

Magazine Pouches

Magazines

Oil

Pen

Penknife

Plastic Bag

Raincoat

Registration Money

Shooting Glasses

Spare Clothes

Spare Parts (Mag Spring, Firing Spring, Recoil Spring Set, Firing Pin)

Stool

Sunglasses

Tape

Timer

Tools (screwdriver set, pliars, punch, take-down tool)

Umbrella

Hope that this helps.

Enjoy your first match.

Regards

Peter

Add water and a snack to the list.

You may want to take this, and others you may find, and make a checklist that you review prior to leaving.

I've found that it helps!

If there are any shooters who have a more inclusive checklist, you may want to post/copy it here.

Nolan had a post that was very inclusive, if I remember correctly.  Might add that to the search.  Of course you need to add a Sherpa to list if you take everything he does!

from Nolan's post: What to take to a match

Here's a list of what I carry. I don't have a spare gun so I carry a pretty comprehensive list of spare parts (too many years spent riding Harleys long distances and as an electronics field service engineer have made me a little compulsive about carrying EVERYTHING I could possibly need.)

Accessory gear bag:

Shoes

Gore-Tex socks

Rain gear (one-piece motorcycle suit for those daylong downpours & lightweight 2 piece for intermittent showers)

Gloves (leather work gloves and Glacier Gloves for cold)

Sweatshirt

Clean Tee shirt, socks, & underwear (don’t ask)

Bandana

Hand/foot warmers

Umbrella

Hat

Garbage bags (rain covers for rangebags)

Instant cold pack, & wrap

Ace Bandage

Cool wrap neckerchief

Sun Screen

Shoestrings

Range Bag:

Gun

Holster and belt

Knee and elbow pads

Gun dust cover

Ear muffs and ear plugs

First aid kit

Rule book

Calculator

Notepad & pen

Fitted and tested spare parts:

Guide rod, & recoil spring plug

Hammer, Sear, Disconnector, & Ambi safeties

Extractor

Ejector

Firing pin, & firing pin stop

Pin set

Slide stop

Mag. catch, & Catch lock

Barrel link

Sear spring, Mainspring, Firing pin spring, Mag. catch spring & Plunger tube spring

Bomar Rear sight blade, cross pin, & spring

C-more dot module

Scope battery

Grip screw, & scope mount screws

Cleaning gear:

Gun oil, & grease in precision needle oilers

Bore cleaning solvent

Cleaning patches, & Q-tips

Compact cleaning kit with jags, brushes, and rods

Bore-Snake

Lens pen scope cleaner

Tools:

Pin punch set

Take down pin

Hex key set

Extractor tension gauges

Needle file set

Sear stone

Super glue

1½-inch inside diameter clear plastic tubes:

Magazine springs

Magazine followers

Magazine brushes

Cleaning brushes

Squib rod

Dillon ammo bag:

Double the ammo the match requires.

Small Ice chest

Water

Coca Cola

Powerbar/Goo

Fruit

Frozen Gogurt

Tuna snack kit

Sandwich

Red Bull (generally for the drive home)

You will just have to read the Front Sight article to find out how I lug all this (and more!) around.

"Frozen Gogurt"...? Yummm.....! (vluc is fully prepared for a trip to the Moon here, I see...)

There WAS a bit of a thread over the past few months with pix of shooters' range bags and rolling range kits. That MAY have been before The Gallery, however....... and maybe even before the new Invision transition, too.

LOL! No, that's Nolan's setup, not mine. Just some Nature Valley granola trail mix bars and water for a snack.

I have nowhere near that much stuff in my bag, except when I shoot alone. When there are a number of us together, we kind of pool resources...one has the first aid kit, another the tools, etc, though most of us have a basic set-up.

Might not shoot well, but I eat good!!

Aha! I found it! The thread concerning range bag and carrying gear is still available in this new board format on Page 3 of Gear and Accessories, August 9, 2002. I think there are about 14-15 posts to that thread and, at the time, there were a few photos, too.

I purchased a dillon range bag and I can't seem to figure out where I want everything to go in the bag.

Ahh... maybe the question wasn't so much what to put in the bag, but *where* to put it?

In my Dillon bag, I generally have things like this:

Inside pocket - on the end:

-- magazine brush

-- squib rod

-- leatherman

-- cleaning-rod

-- sunblock

Inside pockets - side

-- rulebook

-- pad of paper

-- pens

-- overlays

-- small first-aid kit

-- small pack of hand-wipes

-- small pack of kleenex

Main compartment

-- ammo (in plastic boxes)

-- 4 blue-plastic Dillon boxes (like die-sets come in, they fit nice and stack well)

-- one contains "parts" (extractor, various springs, etc)

-- one contains "tools" (small screwdrivers, allen wrenches, etc)

-- one contains "cleaning stuff" (bore snake, lube, solvent, etc)

-- one contains things like aspirin, advil, spare batteries etc

In the outside pockets, I keep

-- my pistol rug

-- my magazines (in a SpeedShooters pouch)

-- my scorecards/match book for the day

-- a couple of spare floppy disks (so I can get a copy of the match on disk)

When I'm transporting stuff, my ear protection, inner belt, hat and other things get dumped into the main compartment, and my holster belt gets looped through the handles.

Oh, and, there is enough room in the main compartment for a good-size (32-oz) bottle of Gatorade or water, and a couple of granola bars.

I used to try to carry everything with me. Now I leave almost everything in my truck during a match and just carry a Dillon "border shift" bag with ammo, mags, and some water in it. And I carry my folding chair. Of course, at my home club I've been driving my truck around so that's moot, but most places I go I'm a minimalist.
