Fireant
How does that tell? I put a magnet on it and it stuck, but it also stuck to my STI which is chromed and my S&W 5906 which is stainless.
boz1911
I have a Colt Python I inherited that I believe is the ultimate polished stainless. Any way to confirm that? Figured this was the place for an answer if someone knows Fireants answer.

GentlemanJim
magnets dont stick to non ferrous metals I guess the alloy in in them (5906) must have more iorn than I would expect Just tested several stainless gun parts ..sticks to some but not to others sorry buddy...did not mean to hand you a red herring Jim shakes his head and trots off to find his machinerys handbook
Fireant
So, do I need to send it to you Howard?
HSMITH
You could try good pics in natural light, but if you want to send it I am game. Might take me a couple months and a couple thousand rounds to be sure though

Other wise it can't be heat treated. 300 series is non magnetic.

yoshidaex
i thought Caspian stamps a "S" into the bottom of the slide where the disconnector rides. i'll have to double check mine.
want2race
I have a SS V10 with SS small parts....or so I thought. I bead blasted the whole gun, small parts and all. Going for the matte look. Low and behold the small parts turned black in the park tank. They were all hard chromed and polished. Damn cheap bastards at SA. I'd removed the mainspring housing and apply a drop of cold blue, if it were mine.
Fireant
I'd removed the mainspring housing and apply a drop of cold blue, if it were mine. What should I be looking for when I do that?
Dan Sierpina
I'd removed the mainspring housing and apply a drop of cold blue, if it were mine. What should I be looking for when I do that? For it to blue, Stainless will not discolor.
Chuck Anderson
Will hardchrome discolor with bluing though?
want2race
Not in my testing. My plunger tube is/was hard chromed. I blasted it while it was still on the frame. The only parts that did NOT take the cold blue were the areas I didn't blast enough. My mag button, grip saftey and mainspring housing all had to be hit twice in the blast cabinet, the hard chrome is deceivingly thick and tough to get rid of. Mag Park won't even take to it unless all traces are blasted off.
