Hi Kath! I used to work there on detail for .gov about 1x per month.

I would stay downtown in a plcae called "GreekTown" at the hotel Athenium. Then the rates went up & .gov would not cover cost of the Athenium. I would walk all around downtown detroit at night, but I never felt safe doing that.

So I stayed 500 yards away in Windsor, Canada instead. Crossed the border 2x per day for work. Canadian dolars were .63 cents back then. It was safe & clean (the opposite of Detroit).

Windsor is where you want to be. Avoid the tunnel at rush hour.

Beyond that, Royal Oak out in the suburbs is nice. So is Gross Point.

Top places to consider IMO...

Greek Town --it's a great collection of shops and places to eat near down town.

A couple blocks away is the new MGM Casino a billion dollar facility worth walking through even if you don't "play"

The DIA (Detroit Institute of Art) is one of the countries leading galleries 5 minutes north of downtown

Park plaza on the Detroit River front is cool and has some great views across to Canada the Ambassador Bridge that spans the river.

There are also riverboat rides leaving from down town which are fun if the weather is good.

Comerica Park the home of the Tigers and Ford field the home of the Lions are only a block apart and worth a look.

All that's near down town.... if your concert is at one of the venues up North like the Palace... then

Check out the Medowbrook Hall in Auburn Hills/Rochester area.... and take a walk in Birmingham ----the down town area and the Somerset Collection (two malls)... they have shopping every bit as wild as Beverly Hills, CA.

Places to avoid--- most everything else :surprise:

BTW-- beware the cabs. "Nuff said"

I spent 3 weeks there in the spring and have to say its a pretty bad area. Only had to fill out one police report but lots of weird stories for a company training meeting. I recommend coming home early. Its kind of like Thailand. Nobody really wants to go there.

As an ex Pontiac, Michigander we avoided anything inside of 8 Mile (Detroit city limit) like the plague or only in daylight. Forget night games at Briggs stadium or Cobo Hall, but with the casinos the targets zones have changed a little.

I notice two things..

The 100% of the of the negative comments are coming from people who--------------

1. Come from Ohio.. and may not realize that their license plate makes them a target (possibly jusitfied  )

2. Haven't been in the city for 30 years.

Hey-- I think Detroit has been a third world city for 30 years...(many areas of all the largest cities are just that)..... but there are still some great things to see and do there.

My 2 cents !!

It sure looked pretty from the Windsor side of the river. I've posted pictures in my picasaweb album at http://picasaweb.google.com/Shooter.Grrl

Unfortunately, between the 3 hr construction delay and 2 hour "tunnel bus" ride to get back across the river - I saw the inside of a bus, the arena, the concert and my room at the Hilton :) Oh - and the views of the city from said same room. Next time, I'll know to book my room WAY in advance so I can stay at the Marriott.
