38superman Posted March 31, 2006 Share Posted March 31, 2006 Perhaps someone could enlighten me regarding 10mm moonclips. I just bought a new 610. I believe the model is 610-3 w/ 4" barrel and non-fluted cylinder. It only came with 3 clips and obviously I need to buy some. However, when I went on moonclips.com I noticed that they come in .035 and .040 Is this because 40S&W takes a different clip than 10mm or is there some other reason? While I'm on the subject. Any recommendations on what to buy? Plastic vs. Steel? Brand? I don't think Heathco was available through TK Custom for the 10. Holster and clip holder recommendations? Jerry V Posted March 31, 2006 Share Posted March 31, 2006 Tls, Used my 610 4" for IPSC last year for about 9 mos before going to a 625 and during that time used 2 different brands of clips - Rimz & Heathco. Really liked the Rimz, never had a problem....not one. Couple months before going to the 625, I ordered some Heathco clips, a very well made & precise clip, never had a problem them either. But they are expensive $7 per vs $1.25 per Rimz and after having one of the Heathco's mangled by it being stepped on (or stomped on ) I went back to using the Rimz. Of all the Rimz clips I had stepped on, only had to throw away one, because it actually broke. Now that I use the 610 for defense & woods carry, I've gone back to using the Heathco. sargenv Posted March 31, 2006 Share Posted March 31, 2006 Before I had my 610 worked on it would fire either size clip, now after having it worked on, it prefers the .040 clips. I believe that the ones I have are from moonclips.com but I get them from Dillon (and they've been on back order now for almost 2 months). No fault to Dillon, I don't know why they are taking so long to get back into production. I have not tried the Hearthco clips yet, and someone is sending me some of the RIMZ to try. I've also ordered some extended firing pins for my 610 to see if that solves the issue of the thinner clips. Someone told me that they are .005" longer. It's my firm belief that when the "Classic" run of 610's came out they where made to use the thinner, .035-.036, clips as those where the ones supplied with the Classic revo's. The first run of 610's with the fluted cylinders came with clips .040 in thickness and made like the 45 style. My 610 Classic has different headspace than my 610 fluted. I found this out when I sent an old 610 back to S&W to have the hammer stud replaced and for some strange reason they replaced my cylinder on the gun and set it up with the smaller headspace, none of my loaded .040 thick clips would allow the cylinder to close !?! So anyways, sometimes both thickness clips work, if you have a Classic 610 you may find that your .040 clips have to be perfectly flat or you'll get hangups, for you older 610 owners you may find that you'll start getting mis-fires with the thinner clips (I did). I just got a 10mm clip sample from Ranch products and it is the same clip that comes with the classic 610's, .035 thick, nice clip, easy to load and unload, a little loose with Fed brass, not bad with Win (10mm brass that is) It has spaces or slits between the cartridges. The Brownells clips are from Schere (sp) and are .040 thk, they hold brass a tad better than the Ranch clips (Win and Fed) and look like a std 45 clip. Both are less than 75 cents apiece. Now the Heathco clips, the one I have is flatter than flat, holds all my brass better than the others and is just the best clip you can find, I think Dave mentioned in a past thread that he was looking at making these out of .042 thk material, not sure what mine mic's out to. It's my opinion that if your going to run an uber light trigger with 40 S&W brass your going to want the thicker clips, I was having misfires in my 610 Classic with the thin clips and 40 brass. I started measuring different head stamps of 40 brass I have around and saw many variations, I need better measuring tools to post a list of what I find and will do so someday. I can say that with the Brownells/Schere clips PMC 40 brass fit the best with Winchester 40 coming in second, the others were CBC, Speer (very loose) Fed brass, not nickel (loose), and one more that I can't remember. I have always made my 610 clips .040-.042 Im moving away from stainless unless special ordered as IPSC shooters bend um up fast. My current offering is a solid(no slits) .042 spring steel clip. Dave And to add to Dave's comment, IMNSPO you should always use a tool to un-load your clips, if you can easily pull the cases out of the clip then your clip is too loose. And it's not so much us IPSC revo shooters that bend the clips as it is those "other" IPSC dweeb's that step on 'em. If want want metal clips I have over 100 rusting in my drawer. all shapes all styles all manufacturers... 2 summers ago I was shooting a match in OHIO Met some rev. guys from Mass. One of them gave me 4 plastic rimz to see how I liked them. amazing!!!!!! I got home and immediatly ordered 50 from the manuf. In over 1.5 years I have only broken 4 clips (I shoot alot)IPSC and IDPA I will tell you RIMZ will not work if you have a 625 not enough material between rounds to keep them stable. RIMZ will not work in the 646 not enough material between rounds to keep stable. One good point about the RIMZ in 610, They keep the round firm and straight on the clip for horizontal reloads out in front of you face. The only moon clip I will ever buy for 610 in competition. Thanks Dan, but unless you are left handed that wouldn't work. I didn't know CR Speed made a competition holster for revolver. I will have to check that out.
