Powder scale upgrade

Recommended Posts

Iff you are going to use this to measure powder that is going to be

dispensed thru a Dillon 550 or some such machine, you really don't

need a "more accurate" powder scale.

I use my "not too accurate" powder scale to get me in the right

ballpark, then I throw 10 or 20 rounds and put them thru the

tests (velocity, accuracy, feel).

If I need a certain PF (Minor or Major) then I usually use the

chrono to set my final powder charge.

If you are NOT using the powder dispenser on your 550, but

you are measuring each individual load for precise shooting,

then you might need a "more accurate scale".

Just a thought for you.     :)

Good afternoon Hi-Power Jack.

I have loaded many hundreds of thousands of rounds, shot gun, and 4 different pistol calibers.

You are not wrong, but you are not correct.

the weather plays a lot with the way your loader will drop the powder, the location of your loader and the way you use your equipment.

I check all the time, with my electronic scales, yes I have 2.

the load can change at any time, the powder can clump, it can stick to the sides of the tube, and all sorts of things can cause the powder to measure differently.

To you BMANS45, a beam scale is good as long as the temperature and humidity stay the same all the time, ( NOT ).

When things seem to look a bit crazy, I get out my Jewellers scale, ( its a vacuum ) and check my electronic scales against it.

Things can change a lot just in the powder, a different lot number can be off by a bit.

No matter what, after you have loaded a few, say a 100, for sure check them with your coronagraph, then adjust up or down accordingly.

I never hurts to check the powder drop, a lot to be sure you have not loaded a round to hot or to light.

Just my thoughts on this subject.

High Power Jack, we must met some day, I love my Browning, and always will, it is very customized for my, a lefty.

Be safe out there guys and have fun.

Is that necessary ?    I haven't done it, just presumed once I set drop at 6.7 gr it will stay there.

Am I wrong ?

No. After checking a couple times in the beginning I just roll with it. I just make sure in the first couple hundred everything good. This is just for my match ammo I do this. Practice ammo 10 stops in the beginning and just start rolling out the ammo

I certainly hope not. One HPJ is enough.

When loading on the 1050 I check the powder every hundred rounds or so, as I stop to top up primers anyhow. On my Revo I randomly stop and check powder weights, but once I get into the groove I stop doing that. When loading rifle I weight every charge, at least for the 308, 223 is done like pistol
