Is there any need to change the fiber optic rod in the front sight if it’s not broken? I’ve had the same one in for about 3 years and it just got me thinking. Do they ever dull?

Yes they do dull.  I replace them a couple times a year, they are really cheap.

After I posted this I pulled my gun out and held a new piece of fiber next to the one in my sight. Should’ve changed it a long time ago. It was twice as bright. Never crossed my mind but I’ll change it every so often from here forward.

I have the original red F/O front sight (Dawson) on my STI Trojan (6 or 7 years).  It is still bright.  I clean the gun in an ultrasonic cleaner.

I've been waiting for it to break so that I can replace it with green.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

What are the arguments for Red vs Green FO front sights?

I bought both rods. Am liking the green for now.

Supposedly the eye is more sensitive to green so in theory it should be easier to track.  That said I think its all preference.  I personally run red but am toying with the idea of giving the green a try.  It does seem to be a little brighter.  Just not sure how the contrast would be on a target.

What the others have said, BUT, red dims faster at dusk whereas green stays brighter longer.  Green tends to be brighter at dawn too.
