Buying steel, who to use?

Last spring I bought 3/8 AR500 plates from an online vendor and it lasted about 2,500 rounds before I started getting cracks and pitting. The pistols don't destroy it but rifles under 100 yards do. I'd like to be able to work rifles on steel at 36 yards and farther.

Are there any suggestions for quality steel that can hold up at closer ranges than 100 or 50 yards with a .223?

I have two constraints:

1. I need seven pieces so cost is a consideration.

2. I store these at home and take them to my club, so weight is another issue.

If this is the wrong area, please move. Thanks!

Talk to Karl at GT Targets. He has been making and selling targets for a very long time and makes some of the best ringing steel for Steel Challenge. He makes alot of targets for law enforcement, FBI, Sig academy, etc that are used for rifles and last for a long, long, time.
