Peter K
Which is the best handgun-oriented gun magazine in the US? I would like to subscribe one but don´t know which. Here in Germany we have some pretty good magazines but they are sometimes a bit far away from actuality.
Chriss Grube
The ones in the US aren't much better. Mostly sales pitches for a new toy. AH has some limited coverage of IPSC. You might get 1-2 decent articles in a mag. These days it seems like a recycle of the same crap you read 10 years ago.
j1b
Lack of magazine support is what's killing the sport. There are no good magazines that cover anything we do (to any decent degree) - a point of frustration with me. JB
Joe
For IPSC shooting 'Front Sight' of course. I believe that international memberships are offered. Or you may be able to just subscribe to the mag. http://www.uspsa.org. I like 'Combat Handguns'. http://www.combathandguns.com It covers exactly what the title implies. From military, security and civilian carry. I find AH difficult to read because of the 'boxes' the text is in. Sometimes I'll read the 'boxes' out of order. Other than that I like it. May just be me though. I also read Peterson's Handguns. It's OK but I don't think I'm going to re-subscribe. Detlef
From my experience the magazines you have in Germany are orders of magnitude better than the best one available in the US (probably AH). I'd go so far as to say that this would apply even if you *don't* know German (lotsa pix from actual action shooting sports)... Be happy with what you have, Detlef
Peter K
Detlef, I think the german "caliber" is the best! Meanwhile I know some of the guys who make this magazine and they know what they are talking about! Do you can buy "caliber" in the US?

Peter K
No, "caliber" is a german magazine. SVI has some articles on their website (www.sviguns.com). Very interesting !
et45
Before they stopped publishing the first time,Gungames was the best mag out as far as covering IPSC/USPSA.After they came back though it was pitiful.I still read the old mags from time to time. Hawkster
I have found Combat Handguns as my best read. AH is second, SWAT would be third. SWAT has more tactic type info and some gun reveiws..
kbear38S
FrontSight. American Handgunner sucks. I'm tired of Hackathorns semi-monthly IPSC will get you killed articles. It's exactly the same bull#### Handgun Control uses - gun in the home is 43 times..... Now, if IPSC will get you killed, bullseye shooters are going to cause the Fall of the Empire. Personally I suspect Hackathorn's IPSC bashing has more to do with promoting his business ventures. I'm just not going to pay AH to allow him to publish it and get paid for doing it. zombienomore
Combat Handguns is OK, but most mags are like someone else said, either a rehash of old topics or a forum for the newest Johnnie Whizbang toys. I also find that most mags will not tell the truth about guns from their advertisers. I subscribed to Gun Tests for a while and found that I could read the whold thing in 5 minutes. Good reviews, but just an appetizer.
DogmaDog
The best thing in American Handgunner is the Gun Rights column by Jeff Snyder, which you can read (mostly) on his website (www.nationofcowards.net). I've never seen a gun magazine that wrote anything about technique beyond the really trivial aspects ("slice the pie" or "release the trigger just enough to reset, and then begin your second shot"). Reading AH is sort of like surfing the internet, except you can do it in bed, and there are no porn links. Semper Fi, DogmaDog
BSeevers
I used to think AH was right behind Front Sight. I dumped them because of Ken H's silly IPSC will get you killed and some of the VERY poor articles about IPSC written by people who seemed to know nothing about the sport. The last article about the Nationals was well written and accurate. If next month is as good I might reup and recommend them. Most of the other ones are average. Including American Rifleman. Course I read them all because like shooting any gun mag is good
JFD
I'm happy with my first 2 copies of Front Sight, and read Amercian Rifleman since I'll be getting one until I die and it doesn't piss me off as much as the others. Most gun magazines are a cross between articles by gun salesmen, SWAT wannabee garbage, soldier wannabee garbage, know-nothings trying to preach stupid defensive tactics, and just general garbage such as one shot stop precentages and old wives tales. As far as competition goes, judging by most gun rags I see there is nothing out there besides cowboy action shooting.
kellyn
Precision Shooting, The Accurate Rifle and the now-defunct Tactical rifle are all good magazines. They actually have articles by real shooters with thoughtful commentary on matches. Their focus is benchrest highpower, and now fine hunting rifles. precision shooting has the best info on reloading bar none.
Chriss Grube
Kevin, Ipsc will get you killed. The wife said if I went shooting today and didn't take out the trash she was going to kill me!
