Any tips for a newbie?

I have a brand new CZ SP-01 tactical that I just started using in indoor matches last week. Before this I mainly used my Glock 34. I daily carry my CZ P-01 so I wanted to compete with one also.

The bigger problem is that tonight I had (what the range officer called) three type three malfunctions. They took me forever to clear and I was a mess after them lol. I can't find any clear answer on what causes them. Does anyone here know? I have an 11.5 pound hammer spring, 11 pound recoil spring, extended firing pin and reduced power springs for it and the fpb. I ran factory federal last week and a local (very small)factory's ammo this week. I use MecGar 17rnd magazines. Do I look at my parts, magazines, ammo, or user error for the problem?

The smaller problem is me. I kept messing up my trigger pull. I was constantly not letting the trigger out far enough to reset before trying the next shot. I can't even imagine this because the reset is so much shorter than my Glock. I dry fire a lot, so is there anything else I can do?

Weak magazine springs. Also,

Might check into +10% power mag springs. When I ran a Shadow in USPSA Production I was running 8.5# Main Spring Federal Primers only 10#recoil spring with all the reduced power springs and extended firing pin from CGW with 0 issues. look into a short reset kit from CGW also

Awesome guys, thank you! I will look into the short reset kit and see if it is something that I can do myself. Those videos were the exact malfunction I had, so now I know how to clear them properly. Thank you again, that was just the help I was looking for :-) Jen

It is better to not have them than to learn to clear them fast. There is a way to not have them. Do these mods and they will go away...You specifically need to do mod #2.

Thank you grumpy for the article. I will try this after work tonight. In the article I can clearly see the yellow part that needs to be polished, but I can't see the red part that needs to be beveled. Is it actually there or is it the colors on my phone playing tricks with my eyes?

Try enlarging the picture, the red area is leading edge of breech face, on the right top of area marked yellow. I would try stock mags first. So far the only double feed issues I had was magazine related.

Shorter reset is not an universal answer. I shoot SP01 Shadow a bit and never needed one. Better spent that time and money on a live fire doing trigger reset drill. You're probably too tense and shorter reset may just mask the problem of finger freeze under pressure/tension. Without proper trigger control it may also cost you a DQ in a match, I believe.

Also, the video is good, yet the part where the magazine is removed looks easy. It might require considerable force to remove the magazine. Just do it. You may also get through without locking the slide back by directly proceeding to remove the magazine.

SWITCH TO A SINGLE ACTION TRIGGER!!!! Shouldn't cost more than 50 dollars and can be done in minutes.

With pre travel and over travel adjustments set you will have a new gun.

I agree on the magazine springs (plus 10%)

My stock sp01 springs seemed very very light. nose diving did occur

Something you have probably checked but disassemble and take a look at your recoil spring

Make sure it doesn't have any burrs or unusual bends. Wasn't on a CZ but I received a pistol with a kinked recoil spring one time.

Either way your gun should run 100% out of the box

If you have time you could even let cz take care of it for you

It's billed as a go to war pistol so problems should not exist.. IMO

Arkadi, thank you. I believe that I am tense, this trigger is nothing like I am used to. Even with that, I am more accurate than I have ever been lol. I have won my last two women's matches and finished in the topast 25% of the men's. I really probably just need more live fire time like you said. On the malfunctions I had, I just could not get the magazines out, they were jammed in there. I will give it more force of it happens again. I watched a video where they fixed it that way and it seemed pretty fast. Thank you again :-)

Levi, since it is a decocker, da/sa is my only option, and honestly I think I am OK with it. Getting better every time :-) My stock magazines are actually MecGar 15 rounders. I thought they were 17's but they are not. They are sold specifically with CZs coming to Colorado with our 15rnd limit. I did check my recoil spring once, but I will check it again tonight. While it's hard to say exactly what's going on with anyone's gun without actually seeing the malfunction, I can say that all of my FTE's have been extractor related.

1.) How many rounds does the gun have on it?

2.) Are you reloading your own ammo or running factory?

3.) If you are reloading, are you case gauging?

It's a brand new gun, about 3 weeks old with only about 350 rounds. I use factory ammo only.

As previously mentioned, it's tough to say without seeing you shoot and seeing the malfunction. What is your background with pistols? I ask because limp wristing semi-auto pistols can definitely cause an FTE. It happens to my wife from time to time when she is not diligent with her grip.

Also, do you know what weight recoil spring your gun came with?
