Paul-the new guy
Would you heat the barrel or the comp? I can't get this thing to budge.
kneelingatlas
I would use a toaster oven to heat it evenly. I used a plumber's torch once and discolored the barrel.
MichaelGj
Binary Engineering has made a very good video about removing and installing a Comp. http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=207488
Paul-the new guy
Thanks. I had no idea. Lol
calvinc78
You need a heat gun and you need to get both hot.... If your comps hot and barrels cold the Loctite is not going to deactivate or let loose.
calvinc78
If it's the red Loctite you need to get it to 450 degrees
Pat Miles
Use a torch or some kind of flame... much quicker, just keep the flame moving around the comp near the barrel. No need to heat the whole comp. Put the barrel in a vise as shown but I would space it an inch or two from the vise. With the flame moving it should only take 2 or 3 minutes to break down the LocTite. No set screws, right? You will be surprised how quick and easy it comes off. Just keep the flame moving and don't burn yourself. Easy peasy!
BoyGlock
I put it on a gas stove and count 1-50-75-100 until it smokes, pick it up w/ holder and turn the barrel-comp loose until they separate.
Paul-the new guy
I will have to try again. I used a torch but I was affraid I would overheat it. I didn't want to get it too hot. I don't want to ruin it because I am only getting it refinished and then I will be re-installing it. Having a very hard time with the screws for the C-More also. Guest
If you are running a metal scope mount, a big azzed soldering iron on the head of the screw for a few seconds will usually work. (I have one if you need) Don't do that if you are using a serendipity. If you are using a torch to remove the comp, have you used a spreader attachment? It might help distribute the heat easier so you can heat the parts more uniformly. I've removed loctited parts with a heat gun as it heats parts uniformly without creating hot spots, but as Pat says it takes a little longer than a flame. Also, as mentioned, don't bottlecap it in a vise...the vise acts as a heat sink and you will have a hard time getting the parts hot enough. calvinc78
If your afraid to get the parts hot.... There's your issue. Red Loctite needs to be heated to 450 degrees to completely break it down. Any less than that and you'll be fighting it till you break it free....
calvinc78
If you don't want to over heat the metal. You can always put it in your oven at 450.... It takes a little bit about 20-30 minutes, but you don't have to worry about over heating it as you'll control the temp..... If you do this with the Cmore mount. Then make sure it's just the frame and mount. No plastics.
Paul-the new guy
Thanks Calvin. I got it. It spun right off when I got it hot enough. Same with the C-more mount. I have a good soldering iron. It took a bit to get it them hot enough but once I did they came right out. Thank you guys.
