Jediwarrior
Greetings, I would like to share pictures of rear internal slide lightening cuts using the plunge cut method. Early Colt Gold Cup and Commander slides use a side mill cut which doesn't remove as much material compared to plunge cut. Weight reduction is 30 grams. The theory behind this is that the less weight on the slide that travels over the wrist, the less muzzle flip. Used in combination with a tungsten sleeved barrel, which lightens the front of the slide, you have a faster cycling slide. Second picture shows a Colt Commander slide on the left. Extractors are installed in both slides.
MikeRush
Looks great! I had that done on my 5" SDC and it made a huge difference in the impulse for me. Just makes installing the Aftec a little different.
hotrodder
What diameter end mill was used for the plunge cut? Thanks.
Guest
Looks good! I think that theory has some validity, too. Here are the cuts from my steel gun. In a previous life it was a single stack open gun with similar under slide plunge cuts, but they didn't break through. After deciding to re-purpose the gun the slide was significantly lightened and the plunge cuts became thru cuts.
Jediwarrior
Hi Hotrodder, I use 3/16" diameter carbide end mill. Hi Bamboo, I remember guns from the Steel Challenge 20+ years ago with extra lightened slides like yours. This internal lightening is becoming popular again for Limited/Standard pistols. Glk21C
Looks like what Virgil Tripp did on my open gun slide
56hawk
With the current rules is there any reason for it to be internal? I have two Open guns with through cuts in the rear of the slide. Seems like you could do the same in Limited.
Jediwarrior
Internal cuts are for Limited/Standard. Just didn't want to have holes on the side of the slide where the rear serrations are. I think external lightening cuts are allowed for Limited/Standard. Hope someone can chime in on this. Aircooled6racer
Hello: That is a great way to lighten an IDPA slide as well. You can also cut out under the rear sight to remove a little more weight. Tri Top the slide and you can get the weight way down for a single stack 9mm. Thanks, Eric

Not that anyone would check at a major match, but still shady nonetheless. The internal slide lightening, not the tri top.

In USPSA Limited, Limited 10, and Open as well. Single stack is a lot less clear, however, cuts duplicating those found on mass produced slides and cocking serrations, etc, are allowed. There are a few factory slides with internal cuts...
