bluedevil008
I will be shooting 180gr (JHP) in Major out of a 5" STI. I like to load to 1.185 but I haven't used this powder at all yet. Anybody else shooting 180 out of a 5" STI? How many grains are you using?

bluedevil008
So one thing I've definitely determined (and I've read this) is that batch to batch, this ammo is SO inconsistent. I.E. I have 4.5gr pushing a 180 to 900fps out of my 5" STI.
jim8115
Ron are you sure about those numbers? You got 930 with 5.5 and a 180 , but only 905 with a 165? But my reasoning would be, the heavier the bullet, the higher the pressure, the higher pressure, the higher the velocity (within reason). But I have been behind a chronograph before when the numbers didn’t make total sense to me, and I was looking right at them. The heavier the bullet won't cause higher pressures and therefore higher velocities, but it is possible that the heavier bullet, and more importantly, slightly longer bullet, loaded to the same OAL would cause higher pressure because the base is further down in the cartridge. jim8115
I have had really good luck with it. Like any bulk powder, there is going to be more batch to batch variance than cannister powder. Thats why I went ahead and bought 20 pounds from the same lot. Mine runs real close to W231 . I have loaded identical bullets / loads with both in 38 / 9mm and 40. 38 158 LSWCHP3.5 Gr NR-485 H 709 , L 635 , AVG 6783.5 GR W 231 H 695 , L 675 , AVG 6823.8 Gr W231 H 749 L 695 AVG 7283.8 NR 485 H 774 L 708 AVG 73640 170 Precision Black bullet 1.1204.5 W 231 897,899,896,893,904 AVG 897 ES 11 SD 44.5 NR-485 898,903,899,927,900 AVG 905 ES 29 SD
bluedevil008
Got a new digital scale so I assume it's a bit more accurate than my POS Lee scale. Using 4.8gr to push a 180gr JHP at 1.180 to 927FPS average, but there's a pretty large std deviation.

rooster02
CSB-1 .40 cal Major: I have been shooting this powder for while; the performace load, best accuracy/performance and feel, for major PF: 180 gr X-Treme HP plated bullet 5.2 gr CSB-1 173 PF COL 1.26 run through a STI Trojan 5" SS 1911 mixed cases, all passed through a Reding GRX sizing die, light taper crimp Your results may be different but, I my pretty happy with this load. Jmo2011
How do you get them in a single stack mag at 1.26? Mine require a lot less length than that to fit.
rooster02
I run 10mm mags through my STI without issue. I found accuracy and feed issues went away when I loaded long. Starting at 1.17 COL, working up to 1.26. The X-Treme HP at 180 grains provided enough bullet shoulder to load at this length. It seems STI,s in .40 like long COLs.
