Ron are you sure about those numbers? You got 930 with 5.5 and a 180 , but only 905 with a 165?

From my XD .40

165 Gr Zero JHP @ 1.120

NR-485 powder ( CSB-1)

5.2 Gr 974 FPS

5.5 Gr 1004 FPS

5.8 Gr 1035 FPS

I am pretty sure that is what I got. (Although I have screwed up my numbers in the past.)

But my reasoning would be, the heavier the bullet, the higher the pressure, the higher pressure, the higher the velocity (within reason).

But I have been behind a chronograph before when the numbers didn’t make total sense to me, and I was looking right at them.

The heavier the bullet won't cause higher pressures and therefore higher velocities, but it is possible that the heavier bullet, and more importantly, slightly longer bullet, loaded to the same OAL would cause higher pressure because the base is further down in the cartridge.

I have had really good luck with it. Like any bulk powder, there is going to be more batch to batch variance than cannister powder. Thats why I went ahead and bought 20 pounds from the same lot. Mine runs real close to W231 . I have loaded identical bullets / loads with both in 38 / 9mm and 40.

I have started testing CSB-1 in .40 and 38 Special. These were the results of my most recent testing:

61 degrees, BP 30.15

.40 CAL from a full size Springfield XD 4"; 180 gr S&S Coated LRNFP bullet, COL 1.125; Chronograph-Ballistic Precision

4.6gr CSB-1 AVG 930.8 FPS PF 167.5

4.8gr CSB-1 AVG 935 FPS PF 168.3

5.0gr CSB-1 AVG 973.8 FPS PF 175.28

5.2gr CSB-1 AVG 179.78 FPS PF179.78

38 Special from a S&W 627 w/5"; 160 gr Billy Bullet LRN,COL 1.475; Chronograph-Ballistic Precision

3.7gr CSB-1 AVG 694.7 FPS PF 111.16

4.0gr CSB-1 AVG 731.66 FPS PF 117.6

Both calibers were processed on the same morning.

.40 results; accuracy, the 4.6gr of CSB-1 in the .40 caliber was the best. Prior to testing in the Springfield XD, 20 rounds of UMC w/180gr RNFP was run through the gun.

The following is offered for 40 caliber, 165gr bullet. This data is from an XD 4” barrel. Caldwell Ballistic Precision Chronograph was used;

results are feet per second\foot pounds\power factor. Minor or major power factor was not the primary objective.

CSB-1 .40 cal Major:

I have been shooting this powder for while; the performace load, best accuracy/performance and feel, for major PF:

180 gr X-Treme HP plated bullet

5.2 gr CSB-1

173 PF

COL 1.26

run through a STI Trojan 5" SS 1911

mixed cases, all passed through a Reding GRX sizing die, light taper crimp

Your results may be different but, I my pretty happy with this load.

I run 10mm mags through my STI without issue. I found accuracy and feed issues went away when I loaded long. Starting at 1.17 COL, working up to 1.26. The X-Treme HP at 180 grains provided enough bullet shoulder to load at this length. It seems STI,s in .40 like long COLs.

I am using CSB-1

4.8 grs

180 gr Bayou Bullets

1.190 OAL

Tula Small Rifle Primers

Single Stack 5" 1911

172 PF with my Chrono in Carlsbad NM

168 PF @ Northern Az in Prescott (2x with 2 different guns)

169 PF @ Double Tap in Wichita Falls

168 PF @ Gator in Thibodaux

170 PF @ WSSSC in Mesa

I like it as it is very consistent
