Sighting-in advice

I was at the range a couple years ago, sighting in my newly built AR. New rifle, new scope, new shooter. Next to us in the adjacent shooting bay was one of the old-timer benchrest shooters. As usual, he was stacking bullets into one ragged hole from one of his many wildcats. From previous range sessions, I knew the shooter was a nice guy, could shoot well and also that his opinion of black rifles and the "tactical crowd" was not exactly sunny.

When I mentioned to my buddy that I was having a hard time zeroing my new rifle, our neighbor came over to watch us for a bit. Finally I asked if he had any advice…. He suggested making sure the scope rings were tight, bracing on the sandbags closer to the magwell, exhale properly, make sure to follow through, etc. All good advice that has improved my shooting. After watching me shoot a couple more shots, and deeming that I was doing an adequate job, he offered, in what felt like total sincerity: "Maybe you don't have enough crap bolted onto it?"

This is NOT my rifle, but it does a ton of crap added on…..
