.40 s&w 180gr Projectile

I am new to reloading, and I'm looking for a reasonably priced bullet to load for use in IDPA and 3-gun. I want something with a solid reputation and that will shoot consistent, (hopefully small) groups to be effective for matches. I like the 180's that I have been buying already loaded. They don't seem to have the muzzle flip that the lighter ones do.

Can you recommend one that has done well for you?

Yes. I like Montana Gold JHP in 180GR for 40S&W. I use Winchester 231 powder with Winchester Small Pistil Primers.

Check out Rainier Ballistics. They have been shooting great. 180 with the 5"and 165 in my 6.

I meant to add... I may have jumped the gun a little, but I already bought an 8 lb keg of Hodgdon Titrgroup, and some Federal small pistol primers. Hopefully it will work with the projectile I end up with.

Burket, why do you use JHP? I'm curious.

JHP are Accurate .

As A Matt answered also, I was told they were more accurate. If they are, they exceed my current skill.

I use SNS 180g bullets and love them.

+1 on SnS cast bullets. They are the best cast bullets I've used. He takes the time to pack them for shipment so they arrive intact.

SNS Casting is the best lead bullet on the market. I shoot them exclusively and couldn't be happier. Price is right and they take care of the little guy.

I mostly shoot cast bullets, but then I don't use Titegrope. I've heard that Titegrope & cast bullets smoke terribly. You might want to do a search on that.

I shoot plated 180 gr bullets in front of 4.1 gr of VV N320 out of a 5" SVI, makes minor, runs the gun with a 10# spring and is very soft. Considering upping the spring a bit for slide lock reloads in IDPA, 110# spring doesn't always strip the first round off sometimes needs a little love tap to get it into battery.
