NicVerAZ
Is it just that Hogdson uses the same formula or are these two accidentally the same? Or they are not really the same but people realized that the same charges worked no matter which of the two was used?
superdude
they are the same. ask hodgdon.
eisenhow
They are now the same. Hodgdon makes winchester powders now. If you go to Hodgdon Reloading Data Center you'll see that every single W231 load is the same as HP38. If you look at older historical load data you'll see differences. GunCat
they are the same. ask hodgdon. QFT. BTW....We were asking this same question 15 years ago and the answer was the same back then (per Hodgdon)
NicVerAZ
Thanks. Bass Pro has Hodgdon (spelling corrected) 10% on sale. But they only have the small sizes, of course. Still, good for sampling.
dee loo
Many years ago the difference was in the absorbent material used. If I remember correctly HP-38 used cotton fibers as a base and 231 used wood cellulose. Now they are the same and come from St. Marks.

parisite
Just like H-110 and W-296 are the same.......quite common in the powder business.
anachronism
Except for perhaps a few black powder substitutes, Hodgdon doesn't manufacture any of their powders. They have merchandising rights, and agreements, but all powders are manufactured by third parties. I believe Alliant is the only manufacturer that markets their own products (except for the Reloder series). We do have domestic powder manufacturers, but they don't seem to sell direct to the wholesale chain like they once did, but rather to marketers like Hodgdon & Western. I'm sure I'm missing a manufacturer here, but can't think of them at the moment. Even IMR is distributed but Hodgdons now.
