The_Vigilante
Decided to field strip the new Range Officer I recently purchased to oil it up. Immediately ran into a problem removing the sleeve. The sleeve was so tightly fit that I wasn't able to turn it by hand to remove it and the spring. I literally had to use some vice clamps to turn it because it was so tightly fit. And now I am having the same problem reassembling it. Once I fit the sleeve into the frame the fit is so tight I cannot get it to click into place. Would coating the surfaces with Slide Glide help? Open to any recommendations. Thanks

A tight bushing to slide fit is a good thing, for accuracy. A little lube won't hurt anything, but, if it's fit as tight as some of mine, it won't help much for dis-assembly. ParaGunner
What sleeve in the frame are you referring to?
Quack
with the barrel out, can you install the bushing into the slide by hand? If so, when you disassemble it break the slide so that it's no locked up, and you should be able to remove it by hand.
twodownzero
I'm not sure if the "sleeve" he's talking about is the barrel bushing...the barrel bushing doesn't go into the frame.
Quack
only "sleeve" that i can think of that turns is the bushing.
eerw
SA Range Officer if you are talking about the barrel bushing..a good bushing wrench is needed. it will allow you to wrench the bushing without marring the gun up.
The_Vigilante
To those of you who have replied-thanks. And pardon my use of the word "sleeve". I am not a 1911 aficionado as you can readily tell. I was referring to the barrel bushing. I just purchased a Wilson barrel bushing tool at one of my local gunshops. I'm surprised it disn't come with a bushing wrench, most 1911s do. Also, the barrel bushing is in the slide, not the frame. The_Vigilante
Just a follow-up to my earlier posts. I picked up the Wilson Barrel Bushing tool this afternoon ($32) and was finally able to get the pistol reassembled and working again. Thanks for all of your help. Action Pistolero
$32 for a bushing wrench!! Man, did you have some kind of sign stuck to you or what? If it was something like the Caspian pocket smith it would be one thing but I checked and Wilson doesn't have such a thing. In a pinch, a crescent wrench with tape on the jaws will work. The_Vigilante
The barrel bushing tool I purchased was a 1911 Versa Tool.....see link http://www.natchezss.com/brand.cfm?contentID=productDetail&brand=WC&prodID=WC398&prodTitle=WC%201911%20VERSA-TOOL. It is manufactured by Wilson. I ended up buying this one because it's all they had in stock. None of the other gunshops in town had one. I needed it yesterday or I would have ordered one from Midway, etc.
Action Pistolero
I know the concept of "needing it now" very well. Living in outer east podunk, it's difficult to get anything when you need it. I had looked at Brownell's and the most exspensive one they had was $20 retail. Looks like you did okay. Get more use out of that then just a wrench anyway.
Trini
I'm sure if you would have asked someone would have sent you a Brownell's orange plastic bushing wrench. I got a couple of spares I could send you. Enjoy the 1911. I'm sure it probably will not be the only one you own...
The_Vigilante
Trini, What you are saying is probably true but I needed the bushing wrench ASAP and couldn't wait. Thanks for the offer though. That's what makes this Forum so great!!!
