Been doing single stack 1911's for quite awhile at IDPA now wanting to try something different. What would any of you guys recommend for a starting load that will be good to run thru the gun for break in. I wont be actually shooting any competitions right away so any help with load data that will run in the gun will be of great help. Thanks in advance I'm sure I will need to pick your brains alot!!! Hi-Power Jack Posted September 29, 2010 Share Posted September 29, 2010 Most shooters are using 125 grain JHP's with their favorite powder - Many, Like me, are still using 115 gr JHP's (but I'm going to try the 125's soon). My load is 8.7 gr HS6 with the 115 gr JHP from MG - but of course you'd want to start lower and work your way up and watch for pressure signs/velocity. If you go with the 125's, you might start around 7.7 grains HS6. My 115 gr load is a very nice load - but can't compare it to any others, personally - have read good reviews on it in this forum though. Good place to start. If you are an experimenter, try to get a 100 or so of a few different bullets (make sure the base of the bullet is copper jacketed) and if you can get 2-4 powders, try them as well. If not, buy an 8 pound can of HS6 and order 4,000 MG 115 gr JHP's and save some money. You'll be surprised how fast you go through these - it's not a long-term investment:( Good luck with your load development and your new gun. CocoBolo Posted September 29, 2010 Share Posted September 29, 2010 Congrants on the GM. There are a number of Powders and bullets that will work fine in the gun. HS6 is certainly one of them, and its pretty darn good but you will find that it is also pretty darn dirty. I have not tried every powder out there that will work in 9 major, most of them yes, I settled on Silhouette as the best compromise for feel, accuracy and clean. Bullets while they are just a simple hunk of lead with a copper skin can perform differently in each gun. In my case both of my 9 Major guns do not shoot 115gr JHP's with acceptable accuracy. At 25yd I get a group less than 1" with 125gr JHP or RN and with 115gr JHP I can't keep them on an 8" target. Your gun may perform differently. At 1500fps the 115's just are not working for me. I'm running the 125gr at @1400 fps. In shooting matches I found that both of my guns will have one or two jams in a match with the JHP and none with RN bullets so I shoot RN in the 9 major, I shoot JHP's exclusively in 38 SuperComp. A lead tail bullet will shoot fine but you will get some build up in the comp over time, I do, I just clean it. I also can't tell the difference if I mix a bunch of 115's in the mag with 125's it feels the same, but I know the accuracy isn't there. Loads I've used and like. OAL @ 1.165 MagTec SPP, Win SPP, or CCI SPP. Silhouette 7.8gr w/125gr and 8.3gr w/115gr AutoComp 7.0gr HS6 8.3gr w/125 and 9.0gr w/115 Accurate 7 10gr w/125gr - requires OAL 1.185-1.190 (its a compressed load). You should back these loads off 10-15% for a start and work up. Other 9 major powders WSF (used by firend that has 2 port TruBore the smaller comp). 3n38 (compressed) 3N37 (tired it quit it) N350 (tried it quit it) TrueBlue (tried it quit it) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
