  1. I'm with you John.....but some do like the first/front focal plane reticles for such. I'm just not one of them. The H27 is almost completely out of view on 1.1 and it grows as power is increased to be quite thick and busy. As does the fire dot. On 1.1 all that is really visible is a horizontal line and the firedot. I'd really like to see something like Erik's new reticle in this scope. The scope looks to be bad ass. I'm just hoping it becomes available with a more simplified rear/second plane reticle. The scope Dave had was marked PROTOTYPE all over it. And when the match was over....he took it off his rifle and it went back into the hands of Leupold until SHOT. I don't believe any info is available on it anywhere. But I am glad to see Leupold ready to unveil what looks like an awesome line that is gonna give S&B a good run.
  2. No clocking is necessary. Its the same comp Kirk is running. Roger, I was seeking an unbiased 2nd opnion on the SJC. I just cant grasp that a neutral brake would work equally well R or L. I suppose I'll have to break down and try Kirk or Chad's. I can assure you....there is not a more effective comp on the market.

  4. Cold edits and puts the video together on his Mac. Hes getting pretty damn good at it. Unfortunately this match did not lend itself well to use the gun cam for a barrels eye view. That would have been really cool.
  5. What was the problem? Following? Doubles? I have a JP in my other lower. I like it, but doesn't feel as good as the Jard. Doubling and tripling and quadrupling and then some. But hey.....you might get lucky. Some people do.
  6. Shooting started at 8am. The two long targets were 318ish and 325ish. No....the springy platform was not stable. You had to lightly place yourself on it for the least amount of movement. If you dove on it like I did. It took 20 seconds to settle down. The suppressed FA gun was a Remington ACR also known previously as the Magpul Masada.
  7. Are the stages going to be as labor intensive to reset as last year? Same format?
  8. Pretty impressive scope offering by Leupold. Main tube was 34mm with what appeared to be a 40mm objective. Reticle is in the front/first focal plane. Reticle was the Horus Vision H27 with firedot. It was a 1.1 power that went up to 8x. Turrets were very large and favored the look of the knobs on the new Premier Reticle line of scopes with very tactile feel for click adjustment. They were graduated in 1/10th mils. Illumination was daylight visible. I looked right into the sun and could see it but it was somewhat translucent looking. The dot looked to be smaller than 2moa on 1.1 x and looked monstrous on 8x. Looked to be a very well thought out optic. I just do not care for the front/first focal plane reticles. Dave said retail was to be around $2500 and the new line was to debut at SHOT this year. I can see myself being interested if it is to be available in a rear/second focal plane version.
  9. Its not a SCAR....its the Remington ACR also known previously as the Magpul Masada.
  10. After you shoot it.....let us know how it works. Jards are great feeling triggers but are very finicky to adjust and keep reliable. But when you get a good one.....they are hard to beat. Use red loctite. Because the slightest movement of those screws changes a lot in the trigger geometry. In all honesty.....expect a great feeling trigger but don't count on it being reliable.
  11. <<lets not turn this thread into a rules discussion about DQ's.....keep it on track with its intent.....to post vids and pics>> -mod squad
  12. Yes.....all of us run the Swarovski Z6i in 1-6x. Rob runs the EE version. Its a fantastic optic.
  13. First, it was nice to meet you at FB3G today; thanks for letting me take a peek through your ZX-6i. On the focal plane subject, have you had any trouble with your holdovers changing when using different magnification settings? I'm still quite new to the sport but as I understand it, with a SFP reticle zeroed and holdovers calculated at 6X, the holdovers would be different at 4X, 1X, etc. With a 1-6X optic, 6X may be too much for say, 300yd targets so maybe you'd like to use 4X for that distance. Won't your holdovers change depending on the magnification selected? I'm not arguing for FFP because of this, just trying to get a feel for how one uses variable power optics most effectively and perhaps igniting the whole holdover vs dialing discussion. Nice to meet you as well. Always cool to put screen names with faces. Holdovers won't change with front or rear focal plane assuming you are using them on known size targets and using a reference point on the target for your holds. In our sport the most popular target we see at most large matches are probably MGM flash targets. Next I would say would be Larues and R&R flashers. But given an MGM.....you know it is 10" in diameter with a squarish head on top of it. I hold on the target and use target references for my hold with the dot and crosshairs in my scope for a known distance target. So therefore my the focal plane of the reticle has no bearing of the outcome nor does the magnification. If I was using a calibrated stadia...then it would have to be used on max power or the calibrated power setting for the reticle to work properly. I just know my holds for several of the target styles we shoot at. If its different and outside the realm of a holdover....I will dial my dope and hold dead on.
  14. Well.....another world class Fort Benning 3 Gun Challenge goes down in the books. Phenomenal match! Huge thanks the the Army, the AMU, Sgt. Hampton, Lt. Col. Hodne, Robbie Johnson, the world class stats and administration of Linda Chico and Sandra Orvig with the help of Lee Dimaculangan as well as all others that assisted their team, and to all the service men and woman who make sure we have these freedoms. You folks make this match what it is. Also great thanks to the Ranger Battallion who provided all the men and woman to assist in the reset of stages and help staff the match where needed as well as all the volunteer RO's who came to help. It is an awesome experience for all. I'm thankful its right in my backyard. Its a fantastic end to my season. Another huge thanks to all the gratious sponsors that provide such an outstanding prize table for this match. I'll admit....I'm one of those guys that likes a big prize table. Sincere apology to those who DQ'ed.....but you can say you've been there done that and got the T-Shirt. I thought that was kinda cool. The T-shirt....not the DQ. Those always suck. Maybe somebody will post a pic of the Tee for those that did not get to see one. Congrats to all the top finishers. The talent pool at this years match was huge. Congrats to Bruce Piatt for winning the shootoff after the many reshoots. Couldn't of happened to a nicer guy. BTW.....I thought the truck was supposed to be a 1 in 50 chance? It changed to 1 in a 100. Also a huge congrats to Sgt. Horner and SFC St. John. The AMU has regained two huge assets again for another term of enlistment. You guys rock and have serious talent. Now.....I just hope it happens again next year. Sgt. Hampton does a good job of keeping us all in suspense. If I missed anyone. Thank You for your support. Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
  15. Nope.....the shortest it can go is basically the length of the rifle buffer tube which is A1 length.
  16. That POV GunCam really show how effective the Titan comp really is.
  17. Thanks RS.....the info I was looking for. What FFP reticles seem to be the most popular? I prefer to work in MOA rather than MILs
  18. It really boils down to personal preference based on what works for you. I've had various different setups over the past several years of competitive 3 gunning. The gun I have setup now is the best handling, best shooting gun I have had yet. I will say that my setups differ from my competition rifle to my work rifle. They have similarities but are setup based on the task at hand. I like my competition rifle to have at least a neutral balance or a slight rearward weight. I do not like to have to support the front of my rifle. I like it to somewhat float so that I can drive it aggressively and stop it quickly. Alot of the balance is achieved by adding weight to the buttstock or using a heavier type of stock such as the Magpul PRS. But I have gone to lengths to minimize weight up front by adding a lightweight handguard and a barrel profile that suited me. I chose to start using the PRS after using an A1 stock that I added weight to. I realized I liked the rifle length recoil system and the better balance from adding the weight. It made my offhand shooting much more stable. I was able to make much faster and more accurate shots out to 100 yards with total confidence. Less fatigue of having to support the rifle weight out front worked much better for me. I then decided to get the Magpul PRS due to its adjustability and durability. The A1 stock still felt breakable and lacked any adjustment. There have been times in the middle of a stage that the dreaded stuck round reared its ugly head and its just necessary to run the buttstock into the ground while applying rearward pressure to the charging handle to clear the malfunction. Collapsible stocks pose a problem for that type of clearance and require an extra steop to collapse it before buttstroking it to the ground. And then....it still may break the tube off. The PRS is an extremely durable stock in that aspect. While adding the weight and excellent strength for durability it also is fully adjustable for length of pull past the length of an A1 out to longer than an A2 if that much length may be needed. It also has an adjustable cheekpiece. The added weight of the PRS was about 2 ounces heavier than the weight I added to the A1. My rifle balances and shoots like a dream for me. I am not small. I'm 5' 10 and 235#. I have the ability and mass to tote the heaviest of rifles. I prefer one that will.....for the lack of better terms....darn near shoot itself. There is more to my rifle than just the stock. But that was a big step in getting my rifle setup FOR ME. Also consider having to shoot in unorthodox and out of balance positions. The less work you have to do to support the rifle in competition...common sense sort of told me I could shoot it better. I tried to shoot heavy barreled and front heavy rifles. Just didn't work near as good for me. I could go into several more paragraphs at how I arrived at setting up my rifle over the course of the last couple of years but I'll stick to the topic on hand about stock weight and my choice for the PRS on my competition rifle. Will it be the best setup for you? Maybe. Setting up your rifle to get something you are comfortable shooting and totally confident in usually starts with an evolutionary process. Things will change as you learn and gain more experience in the game and as a rifleman.
  19. But is that worth having a bigger reticle at higher magnification? I know of several Marine and Army snipers that range with their RFP scopes at all ranges of their available magnification. Its just an extra step in their math. Those guys seem to dislike a FFP scope for the same reasons I do but yet the FFP seems to be more requested by the military. I'm just looking for more insight into something I might be missing.
  20. I'm just curious as to the huge benefits of the FFP scope as opposed to the RFP for precision shooting. I know their purpose. Just curious as to the actual benefits of one. I know in a low power optic that several mfg's use a FFP and for the life of me cant logically figure out why. The same kinda goes for an FFP precision scope. It seems backwards to me. At low power the reticle is smaller than it needs to be and then at max power....it seems way larger than it need be.
  21. I can highly recommend Hodgden Benchmark as an excellent extruded powder alternative to Varget. Works great with light projectiles all the way up to 77's. Gives excellent velocity and accuracy. I've loaded many various bullets and load combos and rarely get over 1" groups at 100. Most of the time it is 1/2-3/4" 5 shot groups. Very good powder that meters fantastic and produces excellent results.
  22. My sincerest condolences Brian. I know you will miss her. I dread the day I have to experience the same.
  23. I've used one on a rifle. I didn't like the lens coating that caused the lens to have the blueish tint for the amber dot to reflect upon. I don't think it would b a good option for an open pistol. I'm curious to see if the battery powered variant is any different. One thing for sure.....it felt solid.
