  1. Bayou bullets. 180gr .400 over 4.8gr Universal.
  2. I asked Mark yesterday if I could switch from SS to Ltd. I shot a match with the new gun Sunday and it was too much fun to put down. So make that like 8 M's in Ltd....
  3. I know right! I've shot the left to right stage before at our local club, the others looked VERY similar. Not that I've been studying the diagrams or anything. It's been almost a year, or two, since I've shot at that club. It was a good shake down for the gun too.
  4. In action. Pushing the speed a bit to test out what I can get away with.
  5. Got the word today from DNROI that Brandon had submitted the paperwork regarding his 5.4" barrels. Good to go.
  6. Weak hand load, I just roll the gun over further than I do with a caddie reload.
  7. I already have this 5.5" beast from FGW! I'll send Jon an email just to be sure. I'm two for two with my legality questions so I'm hoping for the Turkey. It's not just the open barrels, it's a cut down 6" gun.... Thanks for the input.
  8. To revisit this. A 6" gun cut down to 5.5" is not legal why? 6" barrels are legal. 6" barrels with a 5" effective length (1" back bored muzzle) are legal. Yes, I checked on that one. 6" slides are legal. Modifications to slides are legal. I remember a pic of one of TGO's Limited guns that had an extensively lightened slide. The only thing left that was 6 inches was the top that held the sight. It was nearly a 5" slide with a top rib out to 6. If the 500 count is the issue, every open barrel for a 5" slide is a 5.5 barrel. The threaded end is the only difference. For limited the end isn't threaded, but if you start with a 6 (as most barrel manfs tell me they do) then it's a modified 6". In 2013 this won't matter. However, I'd like to shoot a 5.5 this year.
  9. Any body can shoot Open.... I have to agree, SS is manly. Which is why I signed up for it...
  10. Guess I should start thinking about loading ammo, once I decide what I'm going to shoot.
  11. I tried one of his kits. Then I had some discussions with Jeff about some concerns I had, especially with the pre travel reduction kits. I don't like the Glock connector, no matter how much it's polished. It's a good drop in, but I can do it cheaper. I use a combination of parts that I've found yield a good feel, reset and consistency between guns. For shooters that don't have Glocksmith access, it's a great choice.
  12. For me the sight picture is a ratio between front and rear widths. I like just a little light on both sides, not too much though. If I can see the front sight through the rear then I know it's aligned. Too thin up front and the front wanders in the notch. Bobby recommended the SVI rear sight and so far I like it. Very solid. As for the thumb safety, my weak hand sits high enough that my palm nearly covers the lever so I cut it down. The safety has a hard click going up to prevent the safety from going on while shooting.
  13. I was away on vacation before I could shoot it. Now I'm back, and I was quick to get to the range. It was just a quick 30 round shake down to make sure it liked my ammo. Initial reaction: I thought I was shooting minor. It weighs the same as my single stack but flips much less. It is a flat shooting gun that points very very well. I'm extremely picky about feel, balance, controls, trigger, sight picture etc. The funny part is, this is not the exact combination of parts I would have chosen for myself. I can't wait to start dumping more rounds through this thing.
  14. Why shoot it stock when it's so easy to improve it. I haven't seen a drop in (prod legal) kit that is better than a combination of tuned parts. There is a place for drop it. I consider it 3 distinct levels. Stock, drop in, custom.
  15. I tried out a sight tracker and couldn't really see any difference. I like the idea but those barrels sure are heavy. Plus, I wanted a spiral fluted barrel and that would be tough with a rib. I finally had to put this one down. For a flight out of town. Thought very seriously about taking it. Lol
  16. STI grip. I'll bring it for sure, but I'm shooting SS. SSN's is in a couple months. Then it's a hard charge on limited!
  17. I call it reverse curve. I've been using that shape for a couple years now. That was one of two parts that I sent for the build. I already had it shaped so I sent it. It looks funky but when others try it, they like it.
  18. It was 37.60 oz before I added my aluminum frame. It should be 39.5oz now, which is exactly what my SS is with an empty mag. The SS MSH and magwell add a bunch of weight, but that's why I wanted them. It adds weight in the bottom of the hand.
  19. I really like the ball cuts on the frame too. They are DEEP, and he used a small diameter ball end mill. The two cuts have perfect spacing between the top and bottom of the dust cover. I'm into little details. Things that many might overlook. Small chamfers on edges, even spacing on cuts, sharp corners on the tri-top, etc.

    FGW 5.5

Here it is. The 5.5" 2011 from Bobby at Freedom Gunworks. Like a 'Lil Debbie, this thing is full of goodness! Infinity barrel and rear sight, Extreme Engineering hammer/sear/disconnect kit, Aluminum grip and the right weight balance to feel like my 1911. A 2011 that feels like my 1911 is a Unicorn I've been chasing for a while. This is the first Infinity rear sight I've had my hands on. I like it. VERY low in the slide. Clean look. The Aluminum grip is hard anodized dark grey and covered in Dawson grip tape. SS main spring housing and SS STI magwell help anchor the gun in the hand and help with the balance. Plus, the STI magwell is not too big as to interfere with my grip on the gun. The Infinity barrel is spiral fluted and can be seen under the slide lightening. Ah yes, the lightening cuts. I asked and Bobby delivered. They are a little different than usual. I had an idea, drew it up, described it on the phone and he knocked it out of the park. The finish is a traditional salt bath hot blue over a matte finish with blasted SS bits. This is just temporary until it's broken in, then it will be sent back for a PVD finish. These are cell phone pics. There looks to be a gap at the grip safety/frame junction, it's not a gap it's just the way the frame is blended. The grip safety tang is narrowed significantly for my big hog knuckle and then blended into the frame.
  21. Youtube.com is a good one. LOL. Actually Bobby Keigans of FGW has quite a few very informative how-to vids up. As for accredited courses, I don't know of any online. There's disassembly, then there's repair and fitting. It's hard to teach a "feel" online. Diasassembly is easy, theory of operation is easy, how much pressure to apply to the file when cutting a .004" chamfer...not so easy. As a carpenter, I'm sure you totally understand the "feel" reference. I've never picked up any AGI books so I can't comment on them. You can take a vacation and hit a college course in NC. Cylinder and Slide has a course as well, but it is NOT cheap.
  22. Sure it works. Just a little late. Last year it was 5min, this year 4. At least I knew what to expect and kept hitting it on the minute.
