  1. http://www.custom-glock.com/peen.html It's not uncommon and the gun has run fine for quite some time since the modification. For whatever reason, some Glocks peen heavily on the slide. One of the Glock armorers who does a bunch of the police guns around here has done this modification a number of times to correct it. I don't have any reason to believe this is the cuplrit at this time, but I won't rule anything out. If the jam returns, I'd consider putting in a block from another gun.
  2. I had the scope up the butt and down the throat last year. Hope they did the throat first... They said I just had bad reflux and some irritable bowel, probably from stress. The preparation sucks, that's for sure. Might as well get a good book and camp out on the crapper. The drugs they give you to put you out are wonderful though! If I had more of that stuff, I probably wouldn't be so stressed! Unfortunately, I've also had a series of prostate infections the past year. Probably also from stress. I've had so many doctors' hands up my ass the past year I feel like a ventriloquist dummy.
  3. Can you elaborate? I'm not sure how to tell for sure. I'd had jams with both a Wolff guide rod and 15# spring, as well as a new factory recoil assembly. Both springs seem to operate smoothly. I did notice that the Wolff spring bends out more when it's installed, maybe just a difference between coiled and flat wound spring types?
  4. Just an update, I shot 6 stages today and no hiccups. The only things changed since the last jam are a complete breakdown, inspection, and cleaning, plus I put the factory mag release back in. Hopefully, the problem is solved. I even shot the match today with the LWD barrel in, since I was convinced it wasn't the barrel because the factory barrel jammed too. I did decide to leave the factory recoil spring in for now too. I checked the mag lips and mine are all over the range on the CGR site by around .005-.006. These mags aren't very old though, so I'm thinking that's just a result of the extra power springs. I did load only 18 rounds instead of my usual 19 today too. Jams are usually a few shots into the mags, so I don't know if that's even a factor. Well, hopefully the ghost is out of the machine. It'll be a couple weeks until I get this gun out to another match. Thanks to all who suggested stuff.
  5. I'll check those mag specs. The mags probably don't have more than maybe 600-800 rounds each through them. If the lips are stretched due to the extra power springs, can that be corrected or are Glock mag bodies considered disposable? The PP load chrono'd this morning at 171PF. Crimp is at .420 with Lee FCD. Is more crimp recommended? No signs of breakage on anything, I just stripped it down and cleaned it up. I don't see anything wrong on the extractor. My breech face is a little rough maybe, but all my Glocks are like that. The mags sitting high...that's interesting and could be something attributable to the oversized mag release. Now that I have that out and the factor in, we'll see. I'll take my G22 to the match with me tomorrow. If the gun jams, I'll try swapping lowers. My G22 hasn't ever jammed. Thanks so much for the help! You guys are fast - much appreciated!!! Edit to add that I noticed that the slide stop piece is a little bigger on the G24 than my G22 or G17. Hmm... Wonder if there's any chance of a round hitting it as it chambers?
  6. I picked up a G24 last summer and it's run fine up until a week ago. I had it setup as follows: LWD barrel, Wolff guide rod, 15# recoil spring, mags with Dawson pads and extra strength springs, extended/enlarged mag release. My load is Precision Delta (FMJ) 180gr, 1.135", 6.2 Power Pistol. I ran this combination with no glitches last year. Made it through the TX State Limited just fine. The only problem I noticed early on was that the under side of the slide where it tends to bang the locking block was a bit burred and sharp, so I had a smith smooth it out and he shaved just a hair off the top of the locking block he said. Things seemed OK for a good while. Now, I'm getting intermittent jams where the round is getting pushed to the side opposite the extractor and the bullet or the case edge snags on the barrel. There will be a cut in the bullet jacket when it snags there. It's catching around the 9 or 10 o'clock position on the chamber entrance. The top of the case rim is sitting just below the extractor and hasn't been pushed up under it when the jam occurs. Happens with multiple mags, usually mid-mag or towards the top. To troubleshoot, I've been going back to stock, one part at a time. Right now, I'm back to the factory barrel and factory recoil spring. I also replaced my mag springs with new ones. Still had a jam. I decided to take out the aftermarket mag release and put the stock back in. I ran out of ammo to test thouroughly enough with the last change. That one is kind of a long shot, I think. I'll load some more ammo and shoot it in a match tomorrow and see what happens. Another smith suggested smoothing up the chamber entrance some more, but I'm thinking that with the same problem in two barrels, that's not it. I think the rounds are just jumping the ramp off into the left side of the chamber face. The only other thing related that I can think of would be the locking block that the first smith shaved down. He didn't take off much at all and I don't think this part is playing a factor in the feeding process anyway (I could be wrong there!) Any other ideas? I'm really frustrated that my Glock is jamming! That ain't supposed to happen! Added some crappy pictures from my phone. On these, the bullet has snagged into the chamber edge in about the 9 or 10 o'clock position. The rim hadn't been pushed up under the extractor yet. You can kind of get an idea from the first picture of the angle the round is taking when it jams.
  7. I've been using Power Pistol. Around 6gr. with a 180 FMJ is major for me at 1.135" out of a Glock. Recoil is a bit punchy but not too bad IMO. It fills the case about half way, so a double charge would be obvious. I like the extra safety margin of the slower burn, especially in a factory Glock barrel. I've tried Titegroup - it was hot and sooty, but recoil was fairly soft. I got really weird erractic ejection out my G22 though, causing some jams. Only happened with Titegroup. That could probably be fixed with some recoil spring adjustment, but I never messed with it. I've used Universal Clays, but only with moly coated bullets, where it was real smokey. Seems like Clays and Universal Clays both have a noticable puff of smoke with any bullet if wind is calm. With moly coated bullets and no wind, I can't see my front sight after the first shot with Universal. Haven't experimented with FMJs with it yet, but I probably will since I still have a few pounds of it. I imagine it might be a tad softer than Power Pistol, but again, I kind of like the extra fudge factor of the slower powder against bullet setback. Power Pistol is around $55 for 4 pounds at Sportsmans Warehouse, which is nice for a cheap guy like me.
  8. Sorry for your loss. Dogs are family in my house.
  9. Looks like Browning has done it a couple of times recently, which was one reason why I was glad to find one a little older (looks like mine is vintage 2002 from the serial number.) My understanding is that the URX is a different frame than the older ones. Then, the UDX (wood grips) is different as well, with the finger grooves actually cut into the frame! That's got to drive the grip manufacturers batty! What are they they thinking? I'm all for keeping the same frame year to year unless there is a compelling design change that warrants a new frame. Let the aftermarket handle the customization! And don't get me started on mag disconnectors!
  10. What barrel length do you use on the Browning for steel challenge?
  11. Thanks for the info, B.J.! I'll have to try some of that Walmart Federal. This box of the gold bullets I have sucks. The gun is whacking the primers hard, but I've probably had one out of every 30 rounds or so not ignite.
  12. I do OK with my G17, but if I was buying new, I'd get the G34. I got the G17 because it was a dirt cheap factory rebuild and I'm a cheap kind of guy. The targets aren't that far away in steel challenge, but a little extra sight radius ain't a bad thing.
  13. Does anyone know if a C-more Railway on a tactical solutions rail allows you room to still get to the take down screws on top or do you have to remove the C-more?
  14. Something is up on that reading with 117 spread. Bad powder throws or maybe the chrono had some trouble due to shadows. My old Chrony will wig out with passing clouds. Best to do it on an over cast day where the light stays fairly even. FWIW, my ported shorty takes 8.4-8.6 of HS-6 to get 170PF (the lighter charge works in summer.) I don't think HS-6 is that filthy at major, but then again I clean my open gun after each use. I might have to try Silhouette. It's been recommended a lot lately.
  15. Last time I got dinged like was when I took my concealed carry test and they only allowed factory ammo. Wasn't as bad as what you had to pay, but still irritating. Yesterday, I snatched up a used .22 at a gun shop known for a good selection, but usually not good prices on new stuff. They wanted $25 for a 500 bulk pack of the cheap Remmy. Not when I can stop by Sportsmans Warehouse and buy it for half that! I don't mind paying a little more at a shop that has knowledge people that can help me out with good service before and after the sale, but I've got my limits!
  16. Well, I guess it was my lucky day. I popped into a gun shop and in their used section was a pristine looking standard Buckmark for $180. No scratches, clean bore. The only thing I didn't like was that some nimrod evidently dryfired it and there was a little peening on the chamber face. It's not creating a burr into the chamber that I could tell, but I had the shop's smith take a look. Looked fine under magnification and he said he'd take care of it if there were any problems. So, it came home with me. I ran 50 or 60 rounds of the bulk pack Remington Golden bullet through and had two fail to fires. The first happened on my second shot, which had me worried, but when I ran the cartridge through again it still didn't go off, so I guess just bad ammo. It happened one more time a few magazines later. The strikes look deep enough (should be if the firing pin dinged the chamber face.) 50 rounds of CCI high mini-mags ran fine. No fail-to-feed or fail-to-extract from anything. I think I'll stick with the mini-mags for matches and the bulk crap for practice. Now, how long can I hold off pimping this beauty out with Tactical Solutions stuff?
  17. They've got a couple light models out there. Looks like the Splash Lite and Contour Lite have the aluminum barrel shroud. Hmm... Lighter is probably better for steel, huh? Actually, the Splash looks pretty pimp, but I don't know about the Hi Viz front sight.
  18. I'm looking at getting a .22 for steel. Rugers just don't seem to fit my paws very well, so I'm looking at the Buckmark. There's a bunch of different models, so which one works best for steel? The 5.5 slab side barrel seems to feel balanced to me and the grip is much better to me that the Rugers. Is something like the Contour (full length rail) desirable in case I might put an optic on later? Or stick with the Standard model and slap a rail on if need be? Or maybe a light weight like the Splash? Too many choices! Also are older ones any better than new production? I saw a '96 (based on serial number code) 5.5 slab side on consignment, but they were asking $390, which seems awful high for a used Bucky. I wasn't sure if there is anything about older production models that make them more desirable.
  19. That's what I was afraid of. I think I might just go with a Ruger 22/45. I've seen one with a 5.5 fluted barrel that looks promising.
  20. Is anyone using an Advantage Arms Glock conversion? I shoot mostly Glock, so that seems a natural choice and I like the idea of being able to draw from my Ghost holster and closely mimicking my IPSC rig. Is this conversion reliable enough for competition or more of a practice tool? I'm looking for something to shoot in local steel matches. I like the idea of the conversion, but I'm skeptical of conversions and don't want to spend the match dealing with jams. I haven't seen AA mags in person, but the other concern I've had is that conversion mags are usually pretty flimsy. Would I be better off getting a Ruger or Browning?
  21. They may be NY liberals, but they're still bean counters. If enough people call their attention to the fact that they are losing significant amounts of money due to their policies, they may reconsider. Yeah, unlikely, but if nobody complains it certainly won't happen. Repeated reminders help. I'd send everything I can back, especially at their expense. I think it's good to continually communicate our side of it. Heck, locally I'll go into places with "no guns" signs if I'm going somewhere nearby anyway and say "oh, I was going to eat/shop here, but because of your policy that discriminates against gun owners, I'll just go spend my money somewhere else. I have a lot of friends and family who share my views and I'll be sure to pass on your policy to them as well."
  22. With Universal Clays and Precision bullets, I've been asked if my gun is coal fired. If the wind isn't blowing at least a little bit, I can't see my front sight after firing a shot. Maybe something slower would work better. I'd think the problem would be even worse with Clays (which I wouldn't shoot in .40 myself) or TG.
  23. I don't care who you are, that's funny right there! http://hillarynutcracker.com
  24. What B.S.! "Unable to monitor or track adherence..." Since when did accountants start moonlighting as detectives? I'd bet CDNN could produce records proving transfer of firearms to FFLs in other states as required by law. How many of Citi's other customers could prove compliance with all applicable laws? I used to work for Citi...no love for them then either! I'll take extra care to make sure they don't inadvertently get one cent of my money.
  25. Those both sound like keepers to me. I just started shooting a G24 recently and it's a great gun! I've sold a number of guns over the year and half the time I kick myself later. I could part with some of my guns if I had to because I REALLY needed the money. Keepers no matter what for me are my grandpa's M1 carbine and a Kimber 1911 my wife gave me.
