  1. I am using a Leupold VX-1 1-4 shotgun scope on my AR, and it works very well. I have a buddy using a similar Leupold AR specific 1-4 scope which is very similar. The shotgun scope is $200, the AR scope is a little more. I have recently read a good review of a Leatherwood Hi-Lux on this forum, but I have no experience with that scope. All are in the $200 to $300 neighborhood. How do you like the VX-1? As I consider scope options, I was thinking it not a bad deal to get one and have the custom shop add a BDC reticle to match my load and maybe change the paralax. That's not much more than $300 for the whole kit, if I go that route.
  2. I don't have a choke, so I generally shoot 1 1/4 oz 4 or 5 shot 3 3/4 dram. I think that's why my stock is cracked.
  3. I shoot matches out to 500 yards so I'm thinking it would be beneficial. I'd also like to attend a big match next year.
  4. I'll try a 1.5 - 4.5 with a duplex next weekend with targets to 500. I knew my zeros on my old high power rifle and didn't have an trouble hitting the target, as long as I could see it. But since I can't see them because they are usually grey or black, I'm trying a scope. In the long run, if I stay with optics, does a BDC offer significant advantage over a duplex?
  5. Might be rebranded wolf, but not the same in my gun. sticks in chamber, doesn't like to extract, and have had many duds. Got it from Cabelas about 3 months ago.
  6. It's a standard A2 with a Wilson air gauged barrel. I shoot irons currently so I'll leave the A2 upper for now. I plan to do a minimum for now. I don't shoot lots of matches a year and all local so what I intend to do will be a big improvement over my M4gery with match trigger. Here is what I want to do. Any comments or suggestions are welcome. Leave the ff tube and handguards stick with 20" Thread the barrel add a comp. Which comp works well with 20" barrel? Get a little bigger aperture turn down the barrel under the handguards. How much to take off diameter, it's nearly an inch now? Use the RRA NM trigger for now. I have a Chip McCormic in my other rifle, could swap.
  7. I got a new CM this summer to use on my M4 style rifle that I've been shooting in 3 gun. It was free to me (Safety bucks from work) and a HUGE improvement over stock, but very creepy. My stock Kimber trigger is better. I would spend a few extra $$$ to get a better one.
  8. Can you use the tip of the flip aperture as a screw driver? What do you like about the diamond over the circle? That's how they taught me to do it. I like the smaller A2 peep for everything , except really close, I "shoot the notch." I'd like a very fine peep, like a NM aperture, for 200-300 and greater, and all in the same plane. Maybe it's not necessar, but I'd like to try it.
  9. There are flat NM inserts, but I've never used one. I have a hooded on my gun. Might require some tinkering. If I had to choose between the notch and sameplane w/ NM insert, I'd loose the notch. I think I'll get the same plane non-tritium below anyway. Maybe big aperture can be set up to take a flat insert. Sounds like a winter project.
  10. Thanks! Could you thread the big aperture to accept NM inserts? I'd like to have the option of a .46 or something for 300 yards +. Doesn't say if it's the same plane, or it's early and I didn't see it.
  11. That's what I've been doing for the short range stuff. The notch may not be an advantage, but I'd like to try it. I saw it on another sight and thought it would be cool to try.
  12. Take a look at the sketch. It doesn't have to be exactly like this, but the general idea is that 1. both aps are same plane, 2. the standard carbine LR has a notch 3. and the other ap is threaded to take NM apertures. I've seen the different features but not together on the same flip aperture I would use it on my 3 gun AR carry handle A2 sight. AR_aperture.pdf
  13. MP5 in 10mm or a Scorpion SMG. http://www.proguns.com/cz61-scorpion.asp A pocket sub gun. That would be cool.
  14. I've shot about 500 rounds or more of the Remington in the last few months and haven't seen any problems yet. In fact, it's the most accurate of the cheap stuff in my rifle. I have about 1000 left. I'll post any problems I encounter here. I was in Katy for a couple weeks this November. I was stopping at lots of Walmarts from Katy to Illinois to get .223 and there wasn't much.
  15. As others have said, it's great for hotels. I ran lots of 30-06 and .45 through it in the hotel. I didn't actually load, I just decapped and sized the brass. It's not ideal, but neither is living in hotel rooms.
  16. But DPMS says they make their own. Maybe they just buy blanks. Is that still making them??? From their own words from another forum. Barrels – We make our own, all machining and button rifling. We make them from 2 materials, 416 stainless steel or 4140 chrome-moly. We make the following calibers; In our A-15 rifles - 5.56 NATO, .223 Rem, .204 Ruger, 6.8SPC, and 7.62x39 In our LR rifles – 308 win, .260 Rem, .243 Win, and 300 RSAUM
  17. Tightloop, You hit that nail sqare on the head! I can't decide on a shooting sport so I find it difficult to concentrate. Like most of you, I've been involved in IPSC, bullseye, high power rifle, sporting clays, black powder, 3 gun, reloading. It usually depends on what is available where I live at the time. I just love to shoot and so does my daughter!
  18. I am just beginning to pay attention to things like grip and have the same dilema, but from a different point of view. My hands are really small but meaty. Grip #1 feels the best (but I still can't hit the mag release without changing the grip on a standard 1911) but I end up with grip two as the string progresses. With two hands, #2 it is most natural for me with gun lining up to point of aim very well. (Kimber short trigger flat MSH, standard grips and mag release) This is a very good question, I look forward to responses.
  19. Is it really necessary? How many failures have you had with an AR system? I'm thinking of getting another bolt that headspaces, and after I install a new trigger, use the original as a backup. Do you think that would be adequate? It sucks to have a gun go belly up even if I only drive a couple hours and pay $20 or $30 for the local matches I frequent. I had a friend who loaned me his but it would be nice to be able to fix most stuff between stages.

    New to clays

Yep, you did it now. Splitting your time and money between shotgunning, 3 gun, IPSC. You are not a high power shooter too are you?
  21. When the charge bar is to the left and locked, on the upstroke, the trip rod won't trip the bar lock. The bracket is grabbing the trip rod and moving it up, but it is not enough to trip the bar lock. Does the bracket move the bar by force or should the force of the spring alone trip the charge bar lock? The bar lock needs a lot of effort to trip too. I don't know if it's always needed that much force but it seems that the full force of the charge bar return spring should not be pushing the charge bar against the lock.
  22. AMERC brass doesn't work with any bullet does it? I don't know how they load it at the factory. That brass is only good for scrap.
