  1. Thanks for the information. I just might use the 5906. I have all the gear for it, and I shoot it more accurately.
  2. I am going to my first IDPA match and plan to use my CCW gun, a S&W 3913, if I dont' have to engage the decocker. I quit using my 5906 at a local range for steel challenge because they made me engage the slide mounted decocker which is too difficult to disengage quickly for my short thumbs. I have the IDPA rules and I believe it says you have to start with the gun "holstered and safe." My contention is that I don't have a safety, I have a decocker. Can someone offer clarification? Thanks! Terry
  3. I gave $350 for an excellent Sportsman 12 Auto with a 30" full vent rib. The most I was offered at a show was $150 when 1100's that didn't look safe to fire were going for $400. I decided to have the barrel chopped and put a mag extension and sling on it. It's a snazzy looking riot gun now and works for slugs and buck.
  4. I won't debate that knocking King Glock off the mountain will be very difficult, but what's wrong with the 3rd generation pistols? (Except that they are not black and "tactical") I don't think you can find a better value anywhere than a used 3rd generation Smith auto for general pistol duties, including the stock classifications of shooting sports. Cool? Maybe not. Effective? Absolutely.
  5. I got one of the early XD's, 40 tactical to use for shooting sports before I knew what I really needed and learned to hate the trigger reset. It was a nice gun except for that. I may get another now that I known it can be fixed.
  6. I shot my first 3 gun this weekend. I converted my 1100 to 3 gun duty with a 19" barrel with vent rib and bead. Having shot lots of sporting clays this year I figured I would do fine just to point and shoot. It worked great for the off-hand steel, but at longer range with the slugs from a kneeling or prone, it wasn't as precise. I hit all the targets and scored well, but the mount is much different from other-than-off-hand and my confidence was lower. I'm thinking about a midrib bead to help align the front and back. I still think that pointing must be faster than aiming with rifle sights. I just have to practice "aiming" with a bead or two. By the way, I really loved that match. Now I need something other than a national match A2 AR. Tooooo heavy and sights are toooooo small.
  7. I'm using it with 200g lead rnfp. It works fine, but I'm going to switch to Clays when it's gone. Clays is very clean in my shotguns. Cleaner than TG in my 1911.
  8. The only time I really shot my Rock River Arms National Match extensively, I fired 30 rounds at a 300 yard slowfire target at 300 yards. The result was 3.1 inches for 30 shots with Black Hills 68 grain reman. That's with NM iron sights from a bench. The point is, Rock River Arms makes a nice upper too. They have a Varmint upper with a "high-rise" type of scope mount. I think they are less expensive too.
  9. It's my first year shooting clays. I'm averaging the course averages so far but need help, especially in what NOT to do. I usually find in sports activities that when I know what not to do and have some guidelines in what sort of techniques are beneficial, I can develop my own style with practice. Of course lessons would be great, but not this year. Thanks!

    HK Shotgun?

Is that a semi? I have the competiton extra O/U. 3 other guys I know have them. I believe they are quality shotguns, although not quite on par with some of the Berettas or Brownings I've used, but the proof is in the pudding and mine throws excellent patterns, fits good and looks good. Can't speak for resale value. Probably not much since HK and Fabarms are parting ways.
  11. The loads are 4.4 grain TG 200 g Lead flat point bullets. about 400 rounds fired in practice and steel plates from Kimber Stainless II. The lead is almost bonded to the barrel. It was from breach to muzzle. I have most of it out, but it's taken hours and hours. I never had trouble with these bullets before but never fired so many rounds without cleaning. If it wasn't some sort of lead problem, could this have caused it? 1 Using RCBS 3 die set on Redding Turret. 2 Seat and crimp in same stage. 3 Even with beveling inside casemouth, slight bullet shaving when seating 4 small ring of lead left just above and inside of mouth of case 5 This ring can be peeled off if a knife is used to get at it. 6 It looks like a thin thread wrapped around bullet at case mouth. Might this righ be more prone to come off and get smeared down the entire lenght of the barrel? I'm getting a crip die anyway, or seat and crimp separately with my die. If not that, what? I NEVER want to go through this again.
  12. I'm just starting clays and have shot about 5 times. Scores are different but I've been at or above the course average. Better than I can say about my pistol shooting. I hope my new shotgun gets here quick!
  13. I handled one at a shop. The fit was good, the metal finish subdued and the wood very nice, except for the checkering. I almost bought one but ended up with a Fabarm instead.
  14. FWIW, I had a Lee 4 hole turret auto indexing for a few years. I had no problems with it. It loaded good pistol ammo at a rate of about 200/hr, which was more than fast enough at the time. I never needed to tweak or adjust, it just worked for about 3000 rounds. It wasn't what I'd call "sturdy," so I got a Redding turret for rifle ammo but now that I'm getting into "massive quantity" pistol shooting, I think a progressive is in order. I really want to try the Lee Pro 1000. You can get a factory refurb with dies for $80. If it doesn't work it can be sold on e-bay for more than retail like the 4 hole turret I had. Since that's probably where it will end up, I will most likely save myself the trouble and get a Dillon of some kind.
  15. How about the S&W 5906? It has the weight and accuracy. Factory hi-caps a still a little pricey, but the guns can be had for less than $300. I'm very new to the "action" pistol family of sports, but I think it's a great production gun. I've used it in local steel matches with success. I also think it's hard to find a better SA/DA trigger on a production gun, just MHO.
