  1. Which ones are the decent motels? I made reservations at Econolodge. Can't tell much from the picture.
  2. Some 16's appear to be faster than others. 16" barrel velocity I'll do a comparison between my 14.5, 16 and 20.
  3. I like it a lot. They need to chamber it in .338 Federal too. That would make an awesome little hunting gun.
  4. I haven't seen a lot of load data using 75 or 77's and 16" barrels. Here is some using my new Chrony F1. Velocity is higher than I hoped based on what others say is achievable. A friend tested his load on my chrony and it was very close to what he got on another. All safe in my gun, may not be in yours. Edited to say OAL is 2.25 not 2.225.
  5. The soft iron jacket of this ammo probably won't hurt an AR500 steel target, but the problem for the match director is that he can't tell the difference between an iron jacket and a tungsten steel penetrator core. As a result, most MDs will ban all ammo that attracts a magnet when shooting at steel targets. To the OP, go ahead and shoot a couple of matches with your AK. If you have good solid shooting fundamentals, I'm sure you won't come last, and you will learn a lot with minimal financial outlay. If you like the sport, you can always sell your AK and buy an AR Thanks, that explains it well. There are alternatives to Wolf and other steel jacketed, but not cheap. Hornady VMax ammmo
  6. To the original poster, be advised, my opinion here is mostly wishful thinking but is meant to give you hope. I'd like to run an AK myself and see how far I can take the platform just because I like it. Unfortunately, others have tried the platform and failed, but I'm not others. I think most of the ergonomic and sighting issues could be largely overcome with the right equipment and practice, knowing of course that it will never feel like an AR. The mag release linked above would help, ergo selector levers are common, there are 40 and 75 round mags available relatively cheaply 75 round mag link and better scope mounts are becoming available AK scope mount link.. Add a scope with a BDC that matches the 7.62 and the trajectory would become less of a factor. Recoil and accuracy (both gun and projectile) may be the biggest issues that can't be overcome sufficiently. Mine is a well build gun by Rifle Dynamics and it's only 4 MOA with any factory ammo. Handloads will help, but I don't have much hope of achieving less than 2 moa. The recoiling mass is very large. A 74 style comp helps but sights still move a lot. Accessories for the AK have proliferated in recent years and the trend will continue. That's good news for AK users. It will make you and your gun (and mine) be more competitive than ever.
  7. Joe puts on very nice matches. Not very iron friendly, now I'm an optic shooter.
  8. I got the Nikon 1" dangerous game. I like the way the heavy #4 retcle brackets the target. That duplex will give me an idea of MOA to help with hold over. I think it's a pretty nice scope for the money. But, right after I got it Midway offered the M223 1-4 in a BDC. I probably would have opted for it.
  9. This came out right after I got the Nikon 1" dangerous game. It's a nice scope, but I would have opted for the BDC if it was the same price.
  10. I'm going to get some Tac today. Hopefully it's what I'm looking for.
  11. How about Retumbo and 90 grain JLK's?
  12. I used to load high power loads for my 20" NM rifle. I am about out of Varget and only have a few hundred 75 Hornady BTHPs left so I'm not heavily invested in anything and will be making some purchases anyway. I'll be using Remington 7 1/2 primers and LC cases. From my readings here, I'm thinking that a 68 BTHP and a slightly faster powder than Varget might be the best option for a shorter barrel. My goal is to maximize BC and velocity. What works best for you in a 16" 1/7 twist barrel?
  13. No expert here, but I've been searching for a scope for a while. I compared this to a couple others at the gun shop. It doesn't the same eye relief at all powers. The glass didn't seem clearer than some other scopes I was looking at. I really liked the Nikon Monach African 1-4.
  14. Welcome. I moved from Illinois a few years ago. There are lots of good shooting enthusiasts especially outside of Chicago. I lived near Rockford. I am so happy to be gone, mostly because of the economy there, but also about the stupid FOID and other political stuff. There is a club in Rockford "pine tree pistol club" http://www.pinetreerockford.com/ that has a monthly indoor IPSC and a weekly practice match. Several guys from the burbs would show up. Check out Tri County Shooting club http://www.tcgc.net/ near Polo. They have pistol and 3 gun matches at up to 200 yards. Guys from Chicago frequented those matches too, but it's a bit further for you. Edited to say my avatar pic is at the pine tree pistol club. Note the official Wisconsin/N. Illinois jacket. : )
  15. It's in their hands now for just over a week. Probably slowed up by the holiday but I hope I'll get it back before Christmas. I really miss the little feller... I got a 642 one year in december. The trigger wouldn't pull sometimes. I sent it to S&W on a Friday, Christmas was then next week, Wednesday or Thursday. I got the gun back on Tuesday. I got the letter saying it would be a week on Friday that same week. Hopefully it's fast for you.
  16. I started with an 870 in skeet and sporting clays. You can learn to pump it fast enough for those games, but it'll never be faster than an auto or two shooter. Auto is the way to go ultimately, but you can have lots of fun with the 870.
  17. "650 with a Dillon trimmer" being the key phrase. I'll give you $100 to do 4000 pieces for me.
  18. Use a choked barrel so you can use light birdshot, your shoulder will thank you! You are right about that! I'd love to use my 1 oz skeet loads.
  19. I almost always use #5 or #6 3 3/4 dram 1 1/4 oz shot shells. Reason is I've been shooting a cylinder bore and the 3 3/4 dram 1 1/4 oz takes down the star and plates when less payload and power doesn't. I've even knocked 2 plates down with one shot. I'm debating having it threaded for a choke this year before I go to a big match. I don't think I would do as well at a 30 - 40 yard steel popper with on open choke even with potent shells.
  20. I'm definitely getting a variable scope. I'm interested in the importance of true 1x low end, illumination and BDC.
  21. Zero point of triangle at 50/200, use like a red dot at short range, use point of triangle out to max PBR, halfway down triangle 300, bottom triangle 400. All rough but OK for IPSC targets. I shot with my Bushnell 1.5 - 4.5 duplex reticle this weekend from 5 to 500 yards. I shot my highpower load so I know the trajectory. I figured out how many MOA the fine duplex was at 4.5 and used it to estimate holdover. I liked it and hit out to 500 pretty easily. I shot too low at close range, I should have spent more time figuring that out. I got to look through an XTR and another scope with BDC and they looked really cluttered (slow) to me. I'm leaning toward no BDC now but will shoot another match or two. I think 1x low end would be better for me than 1.5, and maybe illumination. That's another topic.
  22. Any issues with accuracy after turn down? I'm thinking of doing the same to my NM RRA barrel.
  23. Is the triangle and post on the Trijicon accupoints useful for holdover?
