  1. I'm looking at a few US made vises. Can anyone tell me how the Yost stacks up against Wilton or Palmgren?
  2. +1 on the advice about the mounting height on the vise. I struggled trying to be able file things flat for a long time till one of my buddies who was a machinist clued me about the importance of that.Good to know! I was wondering if I was gonna have to alter my bench at all. It sits just below my belly button, so that should put the jaws at perfect height.
  3. I'm definitely leaning towards American made. I'm a rough carpenter so I see the quality of Chinese steel in the nails we use. It's a shame because it used to be a lot better. I'll probably be picking up a 4" Wilton tomorrow after a local match. Thanks again all! On a side note Mr. Jones, I've been looking into gunsmithing as more of a career than a hobby and was wondering if you have any insight into AGI. That's who I was planning on taking my courses through.
  4. Thanks Can, I agree with you 100% about the table. I will most likely be attaching it to one end of my reloading table, which I built myself and would hide under it during an earthquake. As far as the vise goes, simple is what I had in mind. I was looking more for advice on jaw length and depth. I've come across a few posts recommending Parrot vices and hoped someone had some experience with those. They sell jaw blocks for them and I also have some scrap pieces of leather I could use. Thanks again!
  5. If you don't mind the wait and the price tag, I am in love with my Crossbreed IWB's. A stiffer belt is of course preferred, but there have been times I carried/shot with a flimsy *ss cotton belt and had zero issues with snagging or holster movement. The clips are strong and build/material quality is top notch! If I carry a pocket pistol, I'm a fan of the DeSantis Nemesis. Sticks to the inside of the pocket really well, and does a good job of hiding any printing. Hope this helps ??
  6. Hi all. After a few years of doing all my home gunsmithing without a vise, I figured it's finally time to buy one. I just picked up my first Shadow and I'm about to Cajunize it. My question is what is the best price-friendly vise to buy? Are there any worth buying at Home Depot/Lowe's/etc. What features/size should I be looking for? Any input is appreciated, thanks!
  7. I did this a lot too when I first started. Then I started getting to matches earlier and talking with the better shooters about their stage plans. When they broke down their stage plan, and gave reasons why they did certain things in their run, it gave me insight that I could use on that particular stage and other stages as well.
  8. Bummer! And I was so excited to try out my new Shadow for production in the October shoot ?
  9. One of my local indoor ranges has a simulator. I know this is a large investment, but it is a huge hit and a ton of fun! Maybe it's something you can look into doing after your range becomes a huge success ?? One thing my range does that I really like is they let you swap out any rental gun for one of the same caliber. If you rent a 9mm M&P for example, you can exchange it for any other 9mm they have. And they have a huge variety in all calibers. They do a lot to cater to the new shooter and give them a fun experience so they keep coming back.
  10. An advertisement and a guarantee are two very different things.
  11. I'm still waiting for KKM to start making drop-ins for Springfields!
  12. You can also try Dawson Precision and Canyon Creek Customs. Occasionally they pop up on enos classifieds section too.
  13. I would first go to Dunham's, then to the range. Repeat as necessary. J/k
  14. Welcome from another Michigan shooter. I shoot out of DSC and Racoon Hunters. Thanks for your service!
  15. I started shooting USPSA with a G34 and loved it. I switched to an XDM 5.25 this season and love it. The truth is that when you're just getting into the sport, your gun is gonna out-shoot you. You can't go wrong with either platform, they are both fantastic along with Smith&Wesson's M&P Pro. They can all be tricked out easily and fairly inexpensively. If you are able to, shoot all of them and buy the one that feels most comfortable to you. In the beginning, it's less about equipment and more about fundamentals and technique. Slow is smooth and smooth is fast!
  16. I know there are a lot of people looking for load data for CFE Pistol and a few folks have done a great job posting their test result, but I can't find anyone who has a recipe for CFE behind a 135 gr Bayou RN. I can't even find something close enough to have a starting point, except I'm thinking its going to be in the low to mid 4 gr range. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
