  1. www.uspsa-nationals.org now has the shoot running from check-in on the 13th. to awards on the 17th. I am hoping this is a typing error and the awards will still be on the 16th. All reservations for flights and rooms have already been made. Anyone know for sure?
  2. Questions for the experts, I am picking up a CZ 75 Standard IPSC .40 S&W this weekend. I have done searches on different forums regarding this weapon and have received good feedback except for a couple of items. It appears this weapon has had problems with the rear sight coming apart under the force of recoil battering the weapon. Some people have installed a Springco recoil reducder with good results. I have ordered one, but they stated to make sure and use the black factory shock buffs along with the recoil reducer. My gun is used and it did not come with any spare parts or shock buffs. It looks like it was built in 2000. Serial number is between 1500 and 2000. I contacted CZ-USA and they told me to get shock buffs from Buffer Technology and they don't sell them anymore. Questions are as follows: How should the shock buff be installed with the recoil reducer? Will this save the rear sight from sheering pins? What recoil spring weight are you using? Does anyone make aftermarket sights? I did get some 17 rd. mags from CZ-USA and find that Taylorfreelance makes +2 base pads also. Thanks for any help
  3. 3-gun Nationals does not have "Heavy Metal". I have the AR-15 and a Remington 1100 ready to go for limited divison. For handguns I have a widebody .45 and a 9mm Glock 34. With the 9mm being scored as minor, and the .45 being more difficult to shoot fast ( I don't reload ammo. at this time), which would you choose? I only have 10 round mags. for the .45 and I don't know what the pistol stages will consist of in regards to round count per stage. The Glock 34 has 17 round mags. I have seen some very nice used STI .40's in the classifieds, that looks very tempting also. Opinions please.
  4. I am glad to see that other people are having this problem. As a shooter new to 3-gun (or any firearms competition for that matter), I find it much easier to break difficult stages down into several smaller stages that all run together. Works the best with stages requiring the use of several different weapons. Easier for my mind to stay focused. Kind of like learing to draw your handgun. If you try to learn the draw stroke as only one movement it is more difficult than if you break it down into four seperate movements. All this coming from a shooter that has attended one major 3-gun match - so YMMV.
  5. Thanks for the advise. I received the easyloader and have Patrick Sweeney's book on order. I became impatient and installed the easyloader, but everything works great. I had heard about the 870 carrier working while reading on the Shotgun forums on another site. Maybe they were talking about using it for trap shooting or something.
  6. No instruction with the comp. No pictures, but I did have a burr on one small area of the end of the comp hole. You could easily see it when looking down the barrel from the chamber area. Took the burr out and will test fire today.
  7. I just installed my Miculek comp. on my AR-15. I now have crappy groups that are 6" low at 20 yards and all of the bullet holes are sideways onto the target. Like the bullet is spun sideways instead of going straight in. Checking the hole in the comp. I see brass rubbed off onto one side of the hole. Going back to Brownell's unless someone knows of an easy fix.
  8. Mod. 1100 getting ready for shooting. I have the easyloader on order, but have also heard that the normal shell carrier from the 870 will also work in this shotgun, you just loose the ability to have the last shot hold open feature. You are able to load the magazine just like the 870. Any experience with this?
  9. Thanks you. Just the information I was looking for.
  10. I did a search and didn't really find what I was looking for. I have a DPMS flattop with railed gas block. DPMS removable iron sights front and rear. I am interested in the JP Enterprise Globe front sight. Good idea for long range targets (like 300 yard plates) or am I better off just staying with the DPMS front sight with a National Match sight blade. Does the height of the JP sight match up with the DPMS rear sight? Any other suggestions also appreciated.
  11. Flying to the 3-gun Nationals in Vegas. I have checked the rules for flying with weapons and the airline I am using allows for putting the rifle, shotgun, and pistol (unloaded) all in one case but the ammo. must be seperate. What does everyone use for a case, and what do you use to transport ammo., range bag, and other gear you need for competition? Looking for suggestions. I really like the looks of the SKB 4-gun case from Natchez, just need ideas for the rest of the equipment.
  12. I loved stage 6. First time I shot rifle at 100 yards with iron sights, much less at 200. Was hitting the targets well but had nine rifle malfunctions. That sucked. Then to find out it was from my own stupidity, that really sucked. Lesson learned. Don't change rifle stocks without thoroughly test firing your weapon prior to the match. Different buffer caused short stroking of the bolt. Will have to get a couple of those flash targets. Those are nice.
  13. I hope the comments made in my prior post aren't taken the wrong way. I did not mean to imply that Kurtm was being less than truthful. I was only saying that I never heard any RO bragging about DQing people, nor any rumor to that effect. An RO did state that he was forced to DQ some shooters for unsafe gun handling and was very specific about what sort of 180 violations he would be watching for. I do hope everyone returns for next years shoot because it really puts the shooting sports in a good light in Minnesota. There wasn't a lot of spectators, but the ones that were there were very impressed and the word about the shoot, and the fun everyone was having, spread very quickly.
  14. This was my first official 3-gun match. What a blast. I was lucky enough to get squaded with Bennie Coolie and Todd Salmon. Both were great guys and Bennie was extremely helpful with numerous suggestions for improved scores. I had trouble with my DPMS .308 rifle with numerous malfunctions in two rifle stages. Trouble was caused by me because I had put on an adjustable stock prior to the shoot and didn't test fire the weapon. Replaced with original stock and the weapon worked perfect. Also had trouble with cranium rectal inversion on a couple of the stages. The stages were great. People running the range did an excellent job. Match Director and RO's did an excellent job also. I did not observe any DQ's on my squad, nor heard rumors of any RO bragging about DQ'ing people. Can't form an opinion on that one. I do know the RO's seemed to be really working their butts off. Please keep in mind that these last opinions are from a 3-gun newbie. As for the way the stages were layed out. It looks like the problem comes from the range set up itself. Only a certain number of bays that would allow the safe use of Pistols or Rifles, and a much larger area for the safe use of Shotguns. Allowed for the use of more shotgun stages. Given the physical layout of the range, I thought it was a job well done. Right now Minnesota is just recovering from a heated battle in the House and Senate regarding Bill's for Shooting Ranges and Permit to Carry Laws. The last thing we needed right now was for some stray rounds to leave a range and cause any sort of complaint. I was happy to see a local Senator and a Representative attend the shoot as spectators. Stage 5 did have a large back-up of squads, but there were 245 shooters so I guess that could be expected for a long running stage. My favorites were stage 2 - where you breached the entrance door, then stage 7 - Urban Assault. Both stages apparently had the most DQ's also from what I understand. Also stage 5 was great because my rifle was working properly on that one. Overall I was very impressed with the shoot and the prize table. My wife came and watched on Fri., and Sat. She was so impressed that she is now looking for more 3-gun matches to try to attend. My hat is off to Randy Luth, Dustin Emholtz, and Chris (never got his last name). When my rifle started acting up, DPMS crew took it in and worked on it in quick order. I am sure they were busy with other things but still took the time to take a rifle from a nobody shooter and work on it to help get it running. Customer service at its best.
  15. Good points. Thanks guys. This holster is the new one Blackhawk put out, QBC I think. Similar to the Blade-Tech style holster. Very secure, not a race type holster. It is adjustable and I found the one position was much more comfortable, but I could see where problems may come up when getting in weird positions and such. I have jumped fences, and ran sprints with the holster and the (unloaded at the time) weapon stayed secure in the holster no matter which position I had it in. One position is just more comfortable than the other.
  16. If the rules allowed you to carry your holster in either one of two positions - behind the point of the hip on the strong side, or in front of the hip with the muzzle pointed forward also on the strong side - which would you prefer and why? My holster is adjustable and I find that I can make easy .9 second dry fire draws when I adjust the holster with the muzzle angled forward and have it on my belt in front of the point of the hip vs. 1.1 second draws when I have the holster straight up and down and carried on the belt behind the point of the hip. The problem comes from a strong side shoulder injury that causes some movement difficulty. I can make the draws but it is a little slower. My question is in regards to 3-gun shooting. My draw would be faster from in front of the hip, but how much will the gun get in the way when using the shotgun and rifle during a course of fire. Thus far in my 3-gun competitions I have never had the pleasure of having to carry more than one weapon at a time during a course of fire. Just curious as to the recomendations of the more experianced. Thanks in advance.
  17. You are going to a large major three day match but only live 25 miles from the range. Pros and cons of staying at the match hotel vs. just going home for a good nights sleep. Thanks in advance
  18. How do you find out if you have a slot? I haven't received any notification yet.
  19. I like the HM catagory. I have not shot much competition but this catagory appealed to me because of the calibers involved. Rules: Pump shotgun with 22" barrel max. Each shoot could govern how many rounds could be loaded in the magazine at the start of the course of fire. If you had a five round mag. or an eight round mag. should make no difference once the course of fire is started. Reoloading on the run only leaves time for a certain amount of reloading anyway. Would it be quicker to slow down and load all eight rounds, then continue, or load five and top off as you keep running? Handgun would be .45 acp or .45 gap. Hi-caps allowed but each shoot would govern how many rounds could be loaded in each mag. Some may want 10 round mags., some may want eight round mags. You might even want all mags. loaded to only six rounds to put revolvers on an even playing field. He Men should be able to adapt to any enviornment right? Rifle would be iron sighted .308 or. Magazine capacity would be 20 round maximum. Higher capacity magazine would just have to download to 20 rounds. Power factor for the weapons would be a non issue if the shoots could supply the proper amount of factory ammunition for each shooters weapon. The fees could be tacked onto the entry fee. Might give some of the ammunition companies a way of getting some of their ammunition into the publics hands in a competition style enviornment. Just some ideas from an LEO that has had too many shifts straight, too much coffee, and just got done with that damn Taser training.
  20. Try www.multigun.com - Has several short shooting videos from several stages of a 3-gun match. One shows a very rapid weakhand shotgun reload. It makes it much easier to understand than having someone trying to explain it to you over the internet. Good luck
  21. Need opinions on what muzzle brake would work the best on my DPMS .308 with 18" barrel. It would be used for 3-gun competitions, but the only major competition I am going to this year is the DPMS Tri-Gun Challenge. I don't think they have any compensator rules for this competition. I would like to have the ability to take the brake off and put it back on again. It would need to have 5/8 X 24 threads. I would prefer to not have to send my upper away to have the brake installed. I don't have the time or money to purchase several brakes and compare them so any advise from other peoples past mistakes is welcome. Thanks in advance to Trubl for his advise at the last 3-gun shoot. I was also in contact with Wakal regarding the brake he makes. Any other ideas?
  22. Heavy Metal Rifle: DPMS .308. 18" barrel, JP Trigger, Add on sights. Shotgun: HK Fabarms FP6 12ga. w/Choate 8+1 extension Handgun: Entreprise 1911 .45 hi-cap. What's in your gun cart?
  23. Mr. Kelley: If I remember correctly the bill was about $1200.00. I went without the cryo on the barrel and I also left off the fluting of the barrel. Quite a bit of weight out front but really seems to keep the muzzle bounce to a minimum. Yet the muzzle feels pretty nimble between targets. Time will tell if I will need to put it on a diet or not. It looks a lot like the one you are shooting in the video clips on www.multigun.com. I am assuming this is you anyway. Great shooting. For the pump I went with the HK Fabarms FP6. Pistol grip stock and Choate 8+1 extention. I liked this gun because it will unlock the bolt as the round gets fired, like the Winchester 1300. For the handgun I use an Entreprise hi-cap .45 1911. I will see how the system works for me this Sunday (04-10-05). A small 3-gun shoot at the Del-Tone-Luth range, same range the DPMS Tri-gun Challenge is at. One of the reasons I went with DPMS is that I only live 30 miles away from the company. Our Police Department also runs two M-4's built by DPMS. Very nice weapons. I think the company really does a good job.
  24. I could not decide exactly what I wanted or needed in a .308 for Heavy Metal division. I called Dustin at DPMS and gave him some ideas from this thread. He put together a nice one for me. 18" barrel, gas block with rails and front sight, rear sight on flat top. Surprised to find the upper to have a foward assist and a dust cover. JP Trigger, long handguard and several 20 rd. mags. 200 trouble free rounds in two days practice, first 3-gun coming up on Sunday. I haven't put the gun on a scale but found it very easy to handle and very little recoil. I am used to shooting an M-14 and find this weapon lighter and quicker handling, with less recoil. Enough accuracy to keep all shots in the A zone at 100 yrds. while leaning over the hood of my truck. I have the feeling that if I were to scope it, it would be a real shooter.
