  1. I don't have experience with the G34, but have Glocks and also have an XD45. Having handled and shot both I would have to lean toward the XDm over the glock just for the feel. I can shoot my Glock and XD equally well, but the XD grip feels better to ME. Everybody's different. Try them out at a range and see what you like if you can.

BTW Springfield has a 30% off everything sale going on their site until 15 DEC. Mags included. Best deal I have seen on them in a while.

Thanks for the heads up.....Just ordered four more 9mm mags at $23 a pop.

  2. Interesting. I have four of the Nordic HG's mounted and I've never had one come loose. Best buy in the market IMHO. I've got 3 builds in the works now and pretty sure they will all be wearing NC hand guards. I have broke a lock ring before, but it's my own fault for not having the proper spanner wrench. It's also worth mentioning that the one that broke had been installed and removed several times. When it broke one phone call to Nordic had a new one in my hands in a couple days.

  3. What is needed is an independent test of the various targets. There are plenty of guys that say this is the best or that is the best but how about some objectivity and research. Be nice to see how they really stack up. Anybody interested?

I'd be willing to do it. Say a 10" plate from MGM, Action, R&R. Who else? Maybe 5 types of ammo from .223 at 50, 75 and 100 yards. Label all the hits. Turn that plate around and do the same thing with .308.

The trouble doing this test as stated is it really won't define anything on the large scale. Comparing one target from each manufacturer won't provide enough data to do an honest test, you would really need several that were manufactured at different times. As Mark stated, AR500 is an abrasion resistance spec, but there is still a range to that spec. The way steel is classified it has to fall within a range, but even with the same classification it will still have variances in hardness, stiffness and brittleness. The steel sheet your supplier brought on Wednesday may have slightly different properties from one brought in on Monday. And that holds true with any grade steel from A36 to AR500.

Wow.....this thread is like an octopus on meth :roflol:

Though it has been informative and entertaining.

  5. The biggest thing I'm not comfortable with at this point is the scope. I don't know how in the hell I'm going to hit stuff at 300-500 yards with a 1-4x scope with a big red dot on it. I'll see how it goes though. Worst case I'll sell it and get something nicer next year. These MTAC's are on eBay for like $318 or something. Couldn't justify spending more before I knew what I was doing. Plus I'll mostly be competing in St. Louis assuming I stay in it, and the longest shot they've ever had was like 140 yards from what I can tell.

If you go out and use targets similar in size to what you will see at 3-gun matches you'll find making hits to 400+ yards with your MTAC easy. 9" paper plates make great targets to duplicate the hit area on most flash targets. You will find that the appropriate dot for your range is easy to bracket inside the plate.

  6. Looks like you're pretty much all set. You might find the Trij sights a little big for 3-gun depending on the flavor of the matches you are attending and if they use lots of small plates. But I sure wouldn't change them until running a couple matches, they might work great for you.

For hearing protection I've gone away from muffs completely in 3-gun. I've finished way to many stages with ringing ears after shooting a rifle from an awkward position and the butt lifted the muffs off my head enough to break the seal. Mostly this year I used the Surefire plugs and they work great. The downside is they are like $15 a pair and I seem to lose one at every flippen match I go to.

For carrying your long guns the Midway drag bag is a whole lot of case for the money. I've been using mine 2 years now and haven't managed to break anything on it.

For a chamber plug on your shotgun, I've never been to a match that required it as long as you leave the bolt locked back. That said, I do keep on in my bag so I can lower my bolt on it in dusty or wet conditions.

Best advice I can probably offer is to get out and shoot a match or two before spending another dime if possible.

  7. Funny....until I read this article I had never noticed that you shoot a long gun right handed and pistol left handed. Curious, so are you naturally left handed and right eye dominant that brings this about?

As for the OP's question. I'm also from the frozen northland, even worse in a rural area where winter shooting options are very limited without driving 3 hrs to the Twin Cities. I used to shoot on an indoor 4 position rimfire league. It's only 50', but the bullseye is .17", so it is very challenging. With a new house and kid to take care of last winter I didn't participate and it was obvious this season that my rifle shooting from unsupported positions degraded from the previous year. This year I'm going to pick it back up again using my rimfire AR (at least I'm going to try it). I certainly won't be competitive if I use this vs. my dedicated Winchester 52C target rifle, but it will get me trigger time and make me focus on the fundamentals of marksmanship again.

  8. Well you can count me in again. What was an awesome match at Del-Tone will be even better at FLSC. Between the great job the MN 3gun Group does to host this match and now throw in the larger more flexible range plus the dedication and hospitality that the Westberg's bring to the table (For those that shot last year's match, they were the husband and wife that ran the jungle run)..... this is going to be epic.

  9. We're in the same boat chevyoneton. I've been running my XDm 5.25 .40 for 2 years now in 3-gun with mouse fart .40 reloads. But the idea of having an extra 4 rounds in the gun got the best of me so I just picked up another in 9mm and am in the process of getting that set up for next season. I would still like to have the conversion barrel for my .40 though to have as a back-up gun so I can use the same ammo and mags.

  10. I could have swore I saw a Storm Lake conversion barrel too, but it's not listed on their website so I could be mistaken.

Though I haven't seen anything about changing the extractor, it's a good question Reshoot.

Kinda surprised there's there not more info out there on the 5.25 conversions. You would think that it would be a popular option for guys that shoot both USPSA Limited and 3gun.

  11. Anyone here have experience running a .40 to 9mm conversion barrel on their 5.25 XDm? Looks like both Bar-sto and Storm Lake both make them. I have a 5.25 in .40 and one in 9mm, been thinking about getting a conversion barrel to throw in the .40 so I can have a back-up pistol for 3-gun matches without dragging along ammo for two calibers. Thoughts or advice??

  12. I just built a dedicated .22 upper. Got a really good deal on a CMMG package that had their bolt and dedicated 1:16 twist barrel, I think I paid $175 for it. Put it one a DPMS Low-Pro receiver and topped it off with a Nordic HG. I also added the TACCOM firing pin to increase the reliability when using light triggers. I have about $350 total into it and love it now. It did take quite a bit of Dremeling and polishing on the chamber where it meets the collar to get it to run reliably though. After cleaning that up I ran an entire 525 bulk pack through it in one sitting without a single hiccup.

I would say as far as conversions go, Tim aka; TACCOM probably have the best ones out there. He really knows how to make them run and is the one that told me how to fix mine. You can look him up here on the forum in the vendor area or on their web site.
