  1. 9" over the tube length is pretty weak. I've gotten bit by malfunctions a couple times on my M2 (+7 tube) from a weak spring, even cost me a stage DQ once. Now I run it as long as I can, so long as I can get all the shells in. Haven't had a problem since. Mag springs are cheap so I always keep an extra on hand just in case.

  2. Thanks Brian, you actually had me there for a bit. It looks like your load port has a pretty square leading edge on it too and that's where my second row of shells are getting hung up. I was thinking about tapering that out into the bottom of the receiver to help the 2nd row of shells glide past it while loading the first 2 shells. Maybe just need to practice it more, I'll be picking up some caddies this weekend at the match.

For the Quadload technique, it probably doesn't hurt that both you and Nathan are quite a bit bigger than me. Guessing it's a little easier to manage four shells with those canned ham size mitts. Yep, that's right....if you beat me it's only because you're bigger.

okay, maybe you're faster and shoot better too, but it's mostly because you're bigger :roflol: :roflol:

  3. Alright I've been running a TACCOM Duaload set up for the last year and really like it for the reason that it is so forgiving to use. Especially here in MN where we shoot matches in the winter, the Duaload signifigantly reduces the fumble factor when you can't feel your fingers. Another bonus is it's pretty easy to stay sharp on it with little to no practice. Now watching some of the crazy fast reloads I'm seeing my shooting buddies pull off using the Quadload system (Damn you Payne's), looks like I need to chit or get off the pot.

Anyways I've been practicing the Quadload reloads without caddies a bit and the biggest snag I'm hitting is the top row of shells wanting to catch on the load port as I throw in the first two. Wondering if you guys running a Quadload/Load Four system have done any addition clearancing/porting on the bottom of the shotgun to help the #3&4 shell slid past as you're loading #1&2. Right now I have a pretty square lip there and wondering if I should take some material off the bottom to help the second two shells slip past the port. I've attached a picture of the loading port as it sits now, but I can't see any harm in rolling the sharper angle over and blending it in to the bottom of the reciever. Hopefully that makes sense as I've described it. If any of the shotgun masters on the site think I'm about to do something stupid please let me know. It's always easier to remove metal than it is to put it back.

Here's what she looks like now.

    Thanks for any input folks

  4. That was wild...... Gotta ding ya 5 seconds for the false start which makes it a 7.6 second reload. Don't you just hate range nazis...... just joking. Impressive reload.

    DWIGHT

Yep...Hopefully he gets dinged for 5 seconds on every reload. That's about what it going to take for me to keep up with him at the match this coming weekend. :P

  5. Looks to be a done deal here. Mark Otto gave me a ring and is sending a load 2 vest for the Kid. Pretty Awesome

Can't thank you enough Mark!! He's gonna love it!

Wow.....Way to be the man Mark!!

Lablover, I warn you now, get your son started but don't be surprised when he is soon kicking your butt at the shoots. The pride you will feel is hard to contain.

That's coming from the father of two great 3-gunners. One of which is Tyler Payne of the Army Marksmanship Unit. Though the old man himself is not a bad shot, even when he got crippled by a twig.

Yep.....I've gotten used to the idea that at least one member of the Payne family is probably going to kick my ass at most matches. It would be kind of annoying if they weren't such good folks....... And since Brian is the RM for the Nordic Tactical Shotgun Championships, I'm going to refrain from making any twig comments until July 29th

  6. Welcome aboard from another MN 3-gun shooter. Go check out the MN 3-Gun Group for info on local matches. http://www.mn3gungroup.org/ . Another good avenue for you to reach out to local shooters is MN Guntalk.com http://www.mnguntalk.com/

What you have probably isn't ideal, but it's good enough for you to get a match or two under your belt. The less you spend before hitting your first match the better off you'll be and most 3-gunners (myself included) are happy to loan gear out to a new shooter to help them through a match. First match of the year is coming up in a little over a month, hopefully we will see you there. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions

  7. As I recall the A5 is recoil operated and your shell needs to move the entire mass of the barrel to cycle the shotgun. If this is the case, you may need a heavier load.

Actually the new A5's are inertia operated just like a Benelli.

  8. I prefer my handloads, but with the local price of shot at $45 per 25lb bag it isn't worth it. Think I'm just going to save my loads for trap league and use factory 1 1/8 loads for 3-gun this year. If the price of shot doesn't come down I'm not really sure what I'm going to do with my 55 gallon trash can full of hulls.

  9. My money is on your mag spring is too short. I've been bit a couple times with my M2 by cutting it too short. Now I cut it almost as long as I can and still get the full mag capacity. I'm guessing what is happening in your case is with the heavy loads your gun has more rearward momentum while the spring is trying to push in the same direction, thus hampering it's ability to push the next shell onto the lifter. Is it happening on all your shots or just the last 1 or 2 in the mag? What Dave said about the piston system is solid advice too.

  10. Well I can tell you this. They are based about 20 miles from my house here in MN. I have ordered some parts off their website just cause they offer free shipping and they are pretty affordible. I've gotten a stripped upper that was fine and have gotten some small parts like gas tubes and such. Not the best communication level, but it's a really small operation. Nothing to complain about and I would order from them again.

Barrels no, but my dad has used a few for guys looking to build uber cheap truck guns. I have had the chance to look them over first hand though at a couple gun shows. They are made from Mossberg blanks. The examples I saw looked pretty rough and still had machine chippings in the bore. A couple had pretty good burrs from drilling the gas ports. When I started asking the owner some technical questions on bore and chamber dimensions he looked at me like I was from Mars and had no idea what they were using for reamers. They would work, but I passed.

If your looking for a cheap GOOD barrel, I would suggest the DPMS Mk12 barrel made by Wilson which is on sale at Midway for $160 on a fairly regular basis

  11. I dont think that would work either... I had never shot the proam before, and i thought to myself, "well, i have a couple of sponsors, but im no pro".

That's the way I see myself, I have a couple sponsors but I'm no Pro. That said in the past 5 years my lowest finish at SMM3G, Iron Man and the Nationals, the only large 3-Guns matches I've shot, is 15th. Does that make me a Pro?

Sponsored and your worst finish at a major match is still in the top 15. Assuming you're talking about Tac-Optics, I would throw a flag if you entered in any match as an amateur.
