  1. If the MD or RM wants to shoot the match, by all means they should be allowed to shoot the match. By saying they couldn't, that would make working the match more of a job.....these folks already have jobs and I'm pretty sure they don't want a second one.

As the MD for our local matches, I want to shoot the matches. I'm the guy promoting the match, staying up late to design the stages, building props, maintaining steel, printing off all the score sheets, First to arrive and last to leave the range.....etc, etc, etc. I do it because I want to shoot and I want it to be as good as it can be.

Yes, this is for a local match, but to put it in context. If I were to put in 10X that much work to host a major match, then was told I couldn't shoot it. My first response would be a single finger solute.

    Just my thoughts.

  2. Hi John, I'll try to answer you questions to the best of my ability.

    - Any problems with float tube rotation with the foreward grip? How do the anti-rotation tabs on the forend function?

The reason I ask is that I will put a BUIS on the front.

The anti rotation tabs on mine fit up tight with the receiver and aligned it perfectly with the receiver rail. Even without them, this thing clamps up so tight, I don't think you could move it without turning the barrel nut. Another thing worth mentioning is that where the handguard clamps on, APF has a machined steel backing plate that fits flush. So you can really torque the snot out of it without worrying about stripping threads.

    - What light mount/vertical forward grip are you using?

The light and sling mount both come from Viking Tactics as well as the the sling itself. Top notch stuff IMHO. I can't recall who made the VFG. I have a few of them and this was the lightest and most simple and doesn't require any tools to remove, I think this one might be from BCM, but cant say for certain. The light itself is actually a semi-generic offering branded as S&W, but it works great. I initially had a nice Surefire light on it, but when testing indoors I found that it was so bright that when using intermittently, like you would if clearing your home, that it would pretty much blind your night vision. It was just too bright for indoor use unless you were going to keep the light on, which is not a tactic I would recommend. So I intentionally downgraded to a dimmer light. I would put it at about the same brightness as the Streamlight TLR series of lights.

    - Does the bottom of the rail have a flat on it for barricade?

It is of an octogon design, so it does have a flat on the bottom, but not to the extent like the Seekins where it's a huge flat bottom area.

Lastly, that looks like a 16" barrel. How is that working out with the long rail. Any issues with getting your hand in the blast from the comp?

I have (3) 16" rifles with 15" handguards and blast on the hand has never been an issue. Nothing to worry about here. Biggest thing is having that support out as far as possible to rest on obstacles.

Hope this helps. Fell free to hit me up with any other questions.

  3. The Boomfab is up for purchase on their website. $479

And that's just for the carrier and gas key :surprise:

I'd love to try one, but that is going on the "things I'll never buy until I win the lottery" list.

  4. Set up my Colt Competition Pro 18" with Vortex Viper PST 1-4 scope and Vortex Razor red dot on 45 degree angle and got it sighted in yesterday. Going to a 3 gun match in Coeur d'Alene on Saturday. This will be my wife and my second 3 gun match and we are meeting our oldest son there and it will be his first. Also put on a BAD Lever and a Blue Force Vickers sling (won't have the sling on for the match). I think that this will be a very nice 3 gun rifle.

Welcome to the sport. Just want to make sure you realize having having the Red dot as well as the scope puts you in open class.

  5. I really like mine so far. I'm doing a full write up on the build that I hope to get out in the few days. I haven't got to do much bench testing to see how it groups. I basically got it together, tuned the gas, zero'd it at 100 yards and went straight to a match with it. Seemed to group just a tick over MOA with 55gr FMJ handloads, but this was with a fidgety 2 year old sitting on the bench with me trying to "help", so I think it will do better than that one I get it out for some legitimate testing. It ran like a Swiss watch at the match though.

It's light for sure. With a 15" Nordic HG and a Burris MTAC in an Aero mount the complete rifle came out at 6.96 lbs

  6. APF is good to go. They are based out of MN and have been privately making AR parts for other manufacturers for a long time. Just recently they decided to establish their own brand. Everything I've seen come from them so far has been top notch. From my understanding, the only parts of their complete rifles that aren't made in-house, are the barrels, stocks and grip. They are only about 50 miles from me, so I hope to get up there and check out their facilities at some point, but from what I've heard their machining equipment is state of the art.

I have one of their 15.5 T-Mod rails and it is pretty dang slick. I have it on a rifle that is designated for home defense, but occasionally gets used as a Tac-Limited rifle by myself or as a loaner. The T-Mod system is awesome in this regard, as it's a breeze to remove and re-install any rail mounted accessories. The other nice feature is you can put stuff wherever you want, you're not limited by where the holes are located like any of the other modular type hand guards.

I want to say they are about 4 oz heavier than a similar length Nordic Handguard (also a big fan), but this is including a full length top rail. Guessing if you were to add the optional top rail from Nordic the weights would come out very similar. They are incredibly rigid and the finish has a slight texture to it similar to the JP handguards, so they feel very good in the hands. They are a very well engineered piece and have my seal of approval.

Sorry for the crappy cell phone pic, but here it is mounted on the rifle.

  7. I'd say you still have enough thread on there to hold the comp. Should be able to touch up the damaged threads enough with a triangular file to get a 1/2-28 die started. Don't try to re-use that comp without running a tap through it or you'll be right back in the same boat.

  8. Hey Chris,

I thought I saw some of their stuff on the prize table at the Jeff Kirkwold match but wasn't sure because like you said the name wasn't familiar. Thanks for the info, I think I will try a BCG from them, gotta support the companies that support us shooters, especially at the local level-

    Thanks again -

You won't be disappointed, it's a nice piece.

  9. Shooter 115,

Do you or anyone you know run the APF that you provided the link for? That is an awesome price if they are decent quality. I was reading the other threads about lightweight carriers etc... and while they sound like the hot setup, pricing things out on JP's site, I don't think the cost is worth it for this gun, I would love to have a rifle setup like that but I would probably be better off putting that money into upgrading my pistol and down the road buying a JP complete rifle that is better setup than mine. Thanks for the link though, that would solve my cleaning issue for a reasonable amount-

Thanks for the input guys -

Actually I do know their manager of retail sales (whom is a 3-gun shooter), but I wouldn't endorse their product on that alone. Nor would I comment on their's or any other manufacturers product without actually putting my hands on it first.

That disclaimer out of the way. The APF Armory BCG is very high quality with an excellent finish. I put one in my last build and it was spot on. It headspaced correctly on my VDI 16.5 ULW barrel and was very slick. I also have one of their T-Mod handguards on one of my rifles and will say they are also a very, very nice. All their stuff is made in house on state of the art equipment.

Second disclaimer......I did not get free stuff to rave about their products on the internet. I paid for my gear and am happy I did so.

I know their name is fairly new to the industry, so not too many folks know about them yet, but I think that's going to change. They are putting out really top notch gear at very reasonable prices.

I know we all like to support companies that support our sport, so it's also worth mentioning that they are becoming one of the biggest sponsors of our matches here in MN. Just last weekend at the Jeff Kirkwold Memorial 3-gun Match they were a huge contributor to the prize table including one of their 3-gun edition rifles. They are also a sponsor of the upcoming Nordic Components Tactical Shotgun Championship.

  10. My preference is the Vtac padded sling, but there are other good ones out there. The only mod I make is to replace the small black release cord with a larger flouresant orange one, so I can see and release it easier.

Biggest thing is to practice your slung transitions with allyour gear in place. You will want to know exactly how your sling works or interferes with everything else on your belt.

  11. All this talk about who came up with what has got me wondering WHO came up with the first stacked shell holder? (Oh I already know, but I wonder if all you guys do!) I gotta tell ya all of them look very similer, even to the orriginal ones I saw. I will give you all a hint....it wasn't an American that first did this, and he could gripe here about ALL these copy cats. Chest rigs you say? first one I saw was in 2003 in Italy, and that had been in use for over 5 years. We can all waist time pointing fingers but things tend to develope in parallel, and of course they all are going to look alike....theres only so many ways you can make a broomstick holder look like it isn't. :)

Old school Jesse?? Looks like the "epic" batttle proved school is still in session. :) I must say though shooting with Chris was a pleasure.

    Exactly. Great post Kurt.

  13. I have not tried the Voodoo, but TK told me the contact surface area is more than mil-spec. If you can get that confirmed and it is sufficient, then it would be worth a try. The RCA is not even okay.

I'm also looking a the Voodoo BCG. Can you explain why a lightened carrier group would need more bearing surface than a standard weight carrier? I've seen you mention this a couple times.

  14. I run Jard, but I really like the CMC and the Hyperfire.

Which Jard? The adjustable or the modular? I have run the Jard adjustable in my precision/varmint AR's for several years and as far as AR triggers go they are about as light as you can get. I have one that is just barely over a pound (1lb 2oz). That said, the one thing that I have found is they are very easy to accidentally bump fire especially while letting the rifle "free recoil" in the bags. Though I've never had it happen out in the field. If you're talking about the adjustable, I'm curious what lb trigger spring you are using for 3-gun.

  15. Considering that a rifle length gas system on a 14.5" barrel would put the gas port so close to the end of the barrel, I don't think there would be enough dwell time to build up enough gas pressure to make it run. Unless you were going to run it suppressed all the time, then it would probably fly. Guessing that's why nobody makes one. If you must have rifle length, I'll go along with ccoker and suggest the VTI/ Adams 16.5

  16. The chamber in mine looks excellent. I'm guessing the linear scratches in brass mentioned earlier in this thread are from the rounds contacting the feed ramps, not the chamber itself. This is pretty common and in my experience nothing to worry about from hand loaders standpoint.
