  1. I gave up on revolver too. What was the point of competing locally and having no one but me to compete against. How does anyone move up to higher levels if they never have anyone to compete against? I suppose I could've stuck it out and fought against the autos, many of whom I could beat but is there really a point to that? I sure hate chasing brass though. I'm beginning to think the revolver class needs to go postal :-) I mean each club uses the same COF for revolver and posts Nationally so you can see how your doing against EVERYONE or atleast everyone in your area. With the current rules revolver will just die and to the detriment of IPSC but I don't know the answer for a solution. Just know I quit.
  2. thanx guys for the answers...you'all can close the thread anytime you want now.
  3. So I've got some questions I haven't figured out yet from this forum. Luckily for me the shooting part is easy. Its all the rest I'm having trouble with. So I'll try them out and see if I get any answers. Thanx in advance if anyone replies... -Can anyone summarize the difference between IPSC and USPSA and how do I tell the difference? i.e. if my gun is authorized for USPSA Production but not IPSC Production do the web pages for the clubs usually state this difference, or do I have to just drive down there and say "YO is this USPSA or IPSC? - Why do people post S_I? Is that a general description of STI and SVI type guns? Or is there a deeper reason? - At a club match with a Limited Division what would a guess be of the number of rounds in the magazines on average? - If I review a clubs results page and only Open and Limited results exist should I assume that club just doesn't do the "other" Divisions - Can someone describe what a 2011 is? Is this some specific upgrade that the rest of the shooting world does not differentiate? Or just a description for a modern 1911? - Can I compete in IDPA and IPSC at the same time or is there some deep dark initiation ritual/tatooing or something that prevents it?...no nevermind that question, I'm ok on that one... Again thanx if you decide to reply I know these are really simple questions but the complexity of most of the posts on this website sortof overlooks some of the simple stuff. And if an answer is available by a search and I just missed it you can just say....search that one. Thanx
  4. I don't think the ban will continue, and I don't think the BATF really cares about competition shooting. Commit a crime with your race gun or start selling your hi-cap mags and there would be a world of hurt on everyone. But I was wondering about this idea. With new shooters being pretty confused about the rules would it be possible for gun clubs to have a "base-line gun recommendation". As such it would likely be say a "1911 style gun" of some sort. And have this club provide the high cap mags for the baseline gun. It seems to me you only need one or two to be competitive. The club could get some donated and rent them out as an additional expense to the shooter. The money could go back to the individual who donated them or the club if they bought them. I could buy a base line 1911, practice with it with legal mags, and compete in Limited all I want (at an increased cost to me each match). Now some guys can pay every match for the mags and some guys can just rent them occasionally as they progress from U to GM to see how they are doing against the really good shooters. And ofcourse at some point they will buy their own in the process. It would be likely that the club would eventually start to actually make a profit at this also. If you rent one high cap mag to me at a match wouldn't that be pretty helpful. I mean for most stages doesn't one mag with one 10 rounder work for most stages? I'm asking here because I'm really not sure. But atleast I could see where I fit on the competition ladder on most of the stages. And I would be well willing to pay an extra $5.00 to rent a hi-cap mag. At two comps a month that would generate $120 bucks per mag. Just a thought.
  5. Is the glass half full or half empty? Its half full if your really thirsty, and half empty if your hairs on fire!
  6. this ones easy for me...been there. Went to the match, got out of the car and realized I forgot bullets. :-)
  7. Thanx .40AET. I'm uncertain on the source of my bulged brass. Does Kimber use an unsupported barrel? If I buy the Lee dies will they work in a Dillion press? Any help would be appreciated, I'm so sick of this problem I've moved to 9mm and quit reloading. Would like to get back to it if I can just quit building so many dang unchambering rounds!!!!!
  8. Yesterday I spent the day trying to get a new drivers license in the Commonwealth of Virginia. New rule on the book, you have to demonstrate Legal Presence to have a drivers license. Anti-terrorism act I guess, gotta support that right? Can I prove that I legally am allowed to be in the U.S? So I look up the requirements and head down to the DMV. Guy says to me "Do you have proof of Legal Presence?" "Yes sir, I have a U.S. military Identification card" He says to me..."thats not good enough, just because your in the military does not entitle you to be in America" "Really and why is that?" I ask. He says "Because being in the military is not the same as being an American" Well I said "Yes you have a good point there but I'm not declaring my citizenship, just legal presence" Well he says "You could still be in the country illegally" So he denies me a drivers license, tears up the paperwork and tells me to leave. Being a little pissed at this point, having spent the day waiting for the license, I file a formal complaint against the department. Change the letter with the list or accept whats on the list. None of them speak English. None of them are natural born Americans. None of them understand why I'm getting annoyed with them. Only one guy in the place spoke fluent english, the manager, and he starts to understand that telling a U.S. military member he doesn't have the right to be in America might be a bad call. Eventually I get my license, but I can only keep my cool because I know I can come home and post on the Friday Flame!!!!!!
  9. I have this same problem with .45 ACP ammo. I'll start buying new brass. Is this caused by unsupported barrels as well? Or does it only affect .40?
  10. Yes, I think it will be interesting to see how the situation changes. Is this rule effective immediately? I think I would hammer cock a Ruger if I had one and not a Beretta, wonder what others will do. So what is the point now of having a double action trigger pull of a certain weight if all your shots are going to be single action? Is that rule changing any? Vince are you racking the whole slide? I'm not familiar with Israeli IPSC. :-)
  11. It's unfortunate that the XD is not allowed since it's trigger pull is identical to the Glock, it would be a very competitive gun in the Division. I can see why people don't want it in. It really isn't fair to allow Glocks with a 6 lbs trigger pull in Production either with all the 12 lbs double action guns in the Division. Then you allow them to cock the gun and they have a trigger pull of around 2-3 lbs, again we have a problem. Maybe if we just make the trigger pull requirement 10 lbs we could just even the playing field a little more. Eliminate the Glock all together. Maybe Glocks and XDs, both with advanced technology trigger systems should compete against each other exclusively. I'm under the impression the Production trigger pull requirement seems to match coincidentally with the trigger pull of a Glock, how did that happen exactly? What is it, 5.5 lbs and the Glock is 6 lbs? Anyone know the data on that? I'm just curious. Seems every Production double action on the planet is greater than 10 lbs and out of left field the pull weight of the Division becomes a 1/2 pound under a Glock???? Well if I need to go buy a Glock I will, I want to be competitive, I suppose. I hope no one gets the idea that it is a better gun just because the rules are written in its favor. I would hate to actually HAVE to carry a Glock. But if you let me cock the gun on the draw, well I'm just not sure what gun to buy. Ok just kidding I don't think thats practical. Unfortunately I think the rules will always have to favor one gun over another, but since we have a SA Division and a double action Division, how hard would it be to have a third Division. Say, partial double action, safe action, or technology assisted action Division.
  12. Wow thats alot Liota, Hang in there. Retirement is exceptional. Why I continued supporting my country without a hint of thanx from the American public became really hard to understand when I retired and began making twice the money. Those inspections do suck! Hopefully soon they will go away... or perhaps the I.G.s will go away. One or the other would be my motto. An inspection every year sucks. If the public knew the military did nothing but prepare for inspections all day they would put an end to it quickly but....I always thought it would be difficult to decide to leave the military but it isn't...you just get so sick of it you can't stand to stay. Takes 18-20 years thankfully but thats the way it is...try leaving Goodfellow, that will atleast help. Virginia seems pretty nice so far. Little harder to get into shooting here. Actually went into a gun store here and they said "We don't carry reloading components and we don't know how to get some" Haven't shot IPSC yet but there seems to be a kind of waiting list around here to get in to a match...lots of people I guess. That should be cool. And when your ready to retire let me know...there are good jobs as a civilian for anyone with your clearance here. Hang in there...oh and THANX, I as a new American citizen would like to thank you for your sacrifices. OK a little corny but I mean it....
  13. Mr. Stevens, Thanx so much for the informative and patient reply. And I like your quote very much too. I can tell you that I am very relieved to sense that the Revolver and the XD will be allowed in Production. And I will wait until the decisions are final. So that you can understand some of my reasoning, based on your comment I will now go out and purchase the equipment I need to use the XD in Production and begin practicing with it some so I don't come to a match with the wrong gun or equipment. And it's ok if it isn't approved in the long run. I purchased the gun a long time ago with the hope of trying the Division. Competively with my XD or not so competively with my 6 shot revolver. If I have the opportunity to become a part of this sport I will gladly consider joining the organization at some point in the future. It will likely be due to your response to my question above being handled so well. The two things I have found about this organization are the ability to make complex issues succinct through rules and the character of the people. And as far as the candle is concerned, I apologize if I seemed negative. Next time I'll try and light a candle on my own...from my perspective it felt like you had walked into the room with a lantern.
  14. Mr. Stevens, Thank you so much for your offer and I may soon take you up on it with a direct e-mail. Having just moved to Virginia I have not had any contact with my "Area Director" whomever that might be. I suppose my not receiving the Front Sight is mostly to do with the fact that I am not a subscriber and not a member of USPSA. I am the poor down trodden shmuck who is simply trying to enjoy this sport and see if the USPSA or IPSC is of any real value. Now that I have learned that the rules are published in a magazine I may have to reconsider joining. :-) Although someone once mentioned that subscribing to Front Sight and being a USPSA member had competition benefits, I had no idea it included knowing the rules ahead of everyone else. In most competitive environments that would be considered "un-sportsmanlike". But thats ok. I'll wait and hope they are published publically sometime in the future, and if not I can always compete in IDPA instead. Specifically I have 3 questions I think at this point that I'm unclear on. One is "Where does the ammo go if I compete in Production with a revolver?" the second would be "What revolver holsters are really considered "racing?"" and the third would be "Can I just compete with a Springfield XD?" I guess the over riding real question is "When are the rules published on the web site so that I can actually study them, buy the right equipment and compete on a level playing ground?" What is the typical lag time from a rule being "published" in Front Sight and it actually being in the rule book? This probably seems so trivial, but I have found that IPSC has a few rules that have to be followed or you end up in a Division with no other competitors (Revolver), one you don't know if you can compete in (Production) or one you can't afford (Open). Looks like I'll have to stick with L-10 this year. ;-)
  15. I'm going to compete at my next match with an Open gun in Production, and when called on it just say; "Prove it!" What you don't have a copy of the latest Front Sight? No rules available! Darn too bad for you...sometimes it reminds me of playing cards with a kid...I make the rules up as I go! Ohhhh sorry you brought the wrong gun. :-) Maybe they can just not update the rules on the site and really limit the competition. I can see the article in Front Sight now (actually I can't) "Only Front Sight subscribers win in all IPSC competitions year long" :-) It's ok, I won't win anyway, even with an Open gun! :-)
  16. I tried a Kydex holster for the XD, it was either Fobus or Uncle Mikes and it was really really tight...didn't like it at all. But if you want REALLY good retention go for it. I am waiting to find out if the XD is legal for Production before I buy one.
  17. So the question stands...when do we find out about revolver in Production and the Springfield XD? Why would I join when I don't know if I'm even allowed to compete? :-) Or if no one is willing to summarize the article; any idea when they update the link on the website?
  18. Ok, I checked the rules for IDPA and it appears to me that you can have 3 speedloaders and 2 can be positioned in front of the gun. Wait until someone with IDPA revolver experience weights in though for a better answer.
  19. Well, mmmmm this one is tough. I would suggest a few more speedloaders. Personally for that gun I like the comp III, I would also suggest a triple speedloader holder or some speedloader clips. You could use Comp IIs and they would be useful for general shooting and concealment. I'm kinda curious how you decided you needed two speedloaders in your pocket...how many rounds did you see fired during the Course of Fire (COF) at the match you watched? I'm only asking because I carry 10 speedloaders, and they certainly aren't in my pocket. I think you could get by with about 5 for most COFs. Assuming you don't miss anything. :-)
  20. Well just my two cents and they mean nothing but; I love revolver competition but it's too small a catagory to make it interesting. I often "compete" alone. This fact kinda biases my opinion. Personally I think you can use all the open junk you want on a revolver and it won't change the playing field much. And that is a good thing. Really I think the whole division should be "open" to get more shooters into it. But the playing field changes dramatically if you go from 6 to 7 or to 8 rounds (and someone will invent a 10 round cylinder) So maybe one division/Revolver, with two sub categories, 6 rounds and under, and over 6 rounds. Sure you wanna try revolver bring your snubby we don't mind. You wanna add cool stuff to a 6 shooter and play. We don't mind that either. You wanna buy an ugly Taurus 8 shot and hang a red dot with a muzzle break and a super bull barrel and extend the grip over the back of your shoulder, go ahead. Then winner take all in the Division and winners within the sub categories too. Can you imagine an overall winner with a stock 6 shooter. Sure you can. And personally .38 Special and .45ACP both recoil the same to me, at least at the speeds I can pull a double action only trigger. So I say one power floor, just like in Production division. .38 cal is fine. Yea maybe even .32 caliber, what do I care. As long as they start playing and we see some cool guns and your STILL competitive with a stock 6 gun. WOW! What I would really like to see is revolvers get to use red dots against stock auto-loaders! Oh wait thats way into the future, never mind. :-)
  21. I didn't see mention of being able to modify the cylinder for chamfering of the charge holes. Should we add that?, last I checked I didn't see it in the rules but I think it would help if it was. And if it is in the rules already and I missed it, I'd like to say I like that it is allowed. Atleast that is my impression (since I did it :-)
  22. Try this...forget about it...it's a problem only because you think it is. If this were target shooting it would be an issue but it's combat action shooting. Don't put any tape on any glasses or tilt your head or any of that stuff. Draw the gun quickly, put it in the center of your paralaxed field of view (usually a little to the left of the normal target shooting position), get a sight bead with whatever eye does the job and pull the trigger. Usually twice quickly gets the job done the best! Really try it, it works.
  23. I find the Kimbers incredible guns (haven't tried the Springfield) but I recommend you be careful with the double stack variety. My mags jam often. Gun shoots great until the bullets get stuck in the mag. I would buy a single stack if I bought one today (and may next year). One thing I personally look for is a correctly funtioning, precise, crisp thumb safety catch. It is an important part of the 1911 design and I recommend avoiding deactivating the grip safety. It's good to learn to shoot the 1911 as designed and beginners should really utilize all the safeties a gun can provide. The thumb safety is a good indicator of the overall quality of the fit of the gun and deactivating the grip safety will give you a slightly better trigger pull but really isn't worth the effort until you learn to shoot really, really well. I would also recommend avoiding the one that requires the paper clip to take it down (the shorter barrel lengths), only because it's a little inconvient.
  24. This is in reference to shooting steel... sometimes you shoot at them but you see the air first, diffracting the ACTUAL location of the steel target. This is why I sometimes miss steel. And ofcourse the steel does not see the air or the bullet and so it does not know that it should fall over despite my shooting at it...it has no fear!
