  1. Speaking as someone who has had dozens of "unloaded" firearms pointed at them, it is unsafe b/c EVERY GUN IS CONSIDERED LOADED!!! First rule of firearm safety. That is why the chamber flags for firearms are a bad idea. The whole premise of the flag - that the gun is unloaded - goes against Rule #1 and leads to complacency. -David
  2. Chamber flags are worthless, IMHO. I was at a rifle match a few months ago, and some %$#@ %@ who had a flag in his gun, while showing his rifle to another person, proceeded to point it at the 6 people who were down range. The ^%$@ idiot and the RO both said that it, "wasn't a big deal, because there was a flag in the rifle and it was empty." I've had too many "empty" firearms pointed at me in the brief 9 years that I have been shooting.
  3. Here are the dates for the 2004 International League of Riflemen matches. All of them are in TX. This is a joint effort between Rifles Only and Snipers Paradise.
  4. I must have been looking at something else and got mixed up. Anyway, those are the areas of difference btwn the 2.
  5. A Benelli M1 Super 90. An instant fix for your gas system woes.
  6. The only difference I can see btwn the Leupold Vari-X III 4.5-14x50mm LR and the MK 4 4.5-14x50mm LR/T is the MK4 is about 2" shorter, weights 1oz more, has better eye relief, has about 3" more adjustment at 100yards, and a better field of view.
  7. Here is the listing for optical sights for rifles. I have a TA-11 (donut reticle) and find it quite easy to use. It does take some getting used to the both-eyes open shooting concept, but it works. If you can get used to it, then you can hose the close targets (I'm still getting used to it), no offset iron or optical sight needed. It has plenty of magnification for the long shots, and the donut reticle is good for percise shots. Not to mention that the ACOGs are rugged as heck, with Force Recon Marines using their TA01NSN ACOGs sometimes as hammers to drive tent stakes into the ground. A friend of mine just got the Leupold MK4 CQ/T and he seems happy with it. I haven't shot it, so I can't make any comparisions btwn the two. What ever optic you do choose, I would strongly recommend that you get some sort of cover for it, or at the very least lense covers. The ScopeCoat works very well, and Trijicon makes rubber lense caps for the 4x32 ACOGs. The Grocery Clerks are calling, so I have to get back. -David
  8. Yea, but you gotta join the union.
  9. The legal field is not in demand. Maybe if you're in a support capacity such as a paralegal or secretary (sorry, administrative assistant), but not for an attorney. In NJ alone, over 1,200 people were admitted to the bar last year. Do you think that there were 1,200 new attorney job openings last year in NJ? Even before the economy headed south a few years ago, law firms where cutting back on new hires, concentrating mostly on lateral hires - which causes a conundrum - the only way to get a job is to have experience (lateral hire), but the only way to get experience is to get a job out of law school, which there are very few of.
  10. A lesson I learned real fast. Don't talk about other brands of motorcycles around your girlfriend and her father if they both happen to be Harley owners. On the plus side, she thinks that $12k for an new Aprilia Tuono is dirt cheap!
  11. Or, you could do what I do. Be an errand boy sent by grocery clerks. Only 7 years of school required.
  12. Hope you feel better. A friend of mine standing at least 50 yards away from a popper and got hit by shrapnel hard enought to cause a nice gash on her arm. She went to the hospital, but it didn't need stiches. And people wonder why it is important to wear eye protection around firearms.
  13. Blasted non-baby-killing-warm-and-fuzzy sear blocked Colt lower!! I really got to get out of this <beep>ing state. If you don't hear from me in a while, I'm at the local Re-Education Center.
  14. As Kelly and others have said, Brownells is your friend. They have just about every 1911 part on the planet. The grip bushing on a 1911 comes out w/ a screw driver. To take the trigger out, remove the thumb saftey, grip safety, hammer, disconnect and sear. The trigger then slides right out. Here are instructions on how to dissassemble a 1911. Another one. -David
  15. Might also consider substitute teaching in the local public schools while you're looking. Around here, they pay $60 - $80 day. Depending on the BOE, you need like 2 years worth of college credits.
  16. Why is almost everyone dressed in camo? Do they think we're going to get invaded? I know a lot of people who shoot these types of matches are ex-military, but...
  17. Brownells carries a Low Mount Gun Safety that is made by Gunsite Custom Gunshop. Or if you're handy w/ a welder, you can make one yourself.
  18. One "Matt Houston Special" please. Just that alone tells you Vais is from TX.
  19. It depends on a whole host of factors: who's comp is it, what powder you are using, what bullet weight, how much powder you are using, etc. With the lower pf, there seems to be a trend away from the gazillion port comp towards a more reasoned one. Nowadays, I would say that the 3, 4 or 5 chamber comp with 2 or 4 ports on each side is the norm. Some people have holes drilled into their barrel too. I'm using the same comp I used with the 175pf for Super. A 5 chamber edm comp with 2 holes on each side. I load to a 170pf, using 115gr bullets and Winchester 540.

    Speed Tax

In VA, if you go (I think) 10mph over the limit, not only do you get a speeding ticket, but a ticket for reckless driving as well. There are some states that allow the state and local police to arrest for moving violations, like speeding, not wearing your seatbelt, etc. The US Supreme Court had a case this term on the issue and said that it was OK. As for the State(s) w/ signs that say the penalty for speeding is incarceration, without having read the statute(s), it would be my quess that that is the *maximum* penalty. I would highly doubt that they would jail someone on their first offence w/ an otherwise clean record. It's like if you get charged w/ assault. In most jurisdictions, the max penalty is 30 days in the pokey. However, if you are convicted and it's your first offence and you have an otherwise clean record, most likely you'll get a fine and/or probation. If you have the opportunity to go to court over a moving violation I would recommend that you do so rather than plead guilty and pay the fine and watch your insurance go up. More often than not, the prosecutor will allow you to plead out to a lessor offense, usually unsafe driving. What that means for you is you pay court costs and the DMV isn't notified, as the town usually keeps all the $$$. Dislcaimer: This is not intended to be legal advice. Please consult your own attorney.
  21. Matt, So for MOR rifle where distant 600+ yards steel targets need to be knocked down, the 260 Rem/6.5-08 is the way to go caliber wise? Or if you have $$$ for barrels, the 6.5x284? I have no experience shooting steel at that distance, only paper. -David
  22. The 6.5x284 is a great cartridge, but bbl life is very short, on the order of 1,200 - 1,500 rounds. If you have a rifle that allows the user to swap out the bbl, like the T2K or AI AW rifles, not much of a problem, except for the cost of the bbl. 7-08 might be another good choice for knocking down distant steel, but more recoil and better bbl life, on the order of a .308 or 6.5-08 (aka .260 Rem). I believe the "Super Sniper" scope is a "sniper" scope made by Tasco that does have a National Stock Number, but as far as I can tell, no one is using it. They just sent it in for evaluation. -David
  23. I'd stay away from the Blazers, no matter what gun you're going to use. They don't even work 80% of the time in my .40 S&W Limited gun, which works 100% with every other ammo on the planet. IIRC, Glock doesn't warrant that they (the Blazer) will work in a Glock. If you do get a Glock, which are excellent guns, I would 86 the factory sights. There are plenty of aftermarket sights available for the Glock, from Heinie, Aro-Tek, Wilson, Novak, all of which are available from Brownells. Get a good, stiff belt, such as the one The Wilderness sells, and at least 3 mag pouches. Go to an IPSC or IDPA match and ask if you can try different' people's guns. There are also gun ranges that rent guns. -David
  24. Pat, As for a firewall, the Zone Alarm is good as is the BlackIce (what I'm using). Also, here is a decent page about firewalls and security stuff. As for WiFi, get the AirPort, that will turn your Mac into a wireless router. Meaning, you plug your Internet connection into the AirPort, and then you can access the 'net (or data on that Mac) from other computers. As for being able to access a Wi-Fi connection (wireless Internet connection) on the go, I believe your Mac is already able to receive such a signal. FireWire allows data to be transfered btwn computers at very high speeds. Good if you are transfering multi-media files, tunes, digial picture, digital movies (like from a camcorder), etc. It is like a USB port, but 2x as fast. HTH, David
  25. My only problem with some of the product reviews in Front Sight is that the author of the review doesn't disclose their affiliation, whatever it may be, before hand. There have been people in the past who have written reviews on firearms, that trashed that brand's competition, without disclosing the relationship, when it turns out that they get free product from that manufacture for personal use. All I'm asking for is a little transparency. If you're sponsored by the company, disclose it. If you're helping out that company with marketing, disclose it. If you have any stake in the product, disclose it. How difficult is it to include a one sentence disclosure? I've written to the editor of Front Sight before about this, and was blown off, being told it wasn't an issue. If there are ties between the reviewer and product that aren't disclosed, but later revealed, its going to make people question the objectivity of the person doing the reviewing and also the merits of the product. -David
