Thanks for sharing all of this info. I got the call today that my 24" M3000 came in today at the LGS. I will get it this afternoon.
-
Hmmm, its sounding like the 1200xxx don't fit and the newer 1300xxx do fit. Time will tell.
-
That sounds pretty awesome Mike. Thanks for the update on everything. Looking forward to seeing the stage designs too.
-
I could have really used a cylinder bore choke tube at a match this past weekend. There were some small 4" steel at about 8 yards on two different stages. Being that there isn't a low cost choke available for the VM, I thought I would modify the breeching tube into a usable item for me. I don't do much door "breeching".
The material is pretty tough. I used a bandsaw to cut the end off and then finished it in a lathe. If I ever do another one, I will probably use a cut-off wheel or maybe a sawzall to cut it off.

I just received what should be a "newer" Nova nut with my extension from Shooters Connection. My 24" M3000 should be in this week and I'm assuming it will be a newer run. I will post my findings when I get it together.
-
Wow, that is a freak accident, but obviously a possibility. Glad your OK and that the damage appears to be contained and minimal(compared to what it could be).

After 22 days, I got my VM back today. Good news is that they didn't replace my receiver, bad news is that they didn't replace my barrel. In all honesty I'm just glad to have it back. I plan to mill a dovetail and add a 10/22 rear sight. Loading my 1100 for the past two weeks really made me appreciate the VM.
They did include a target that they shot birdshot at with a full choke(left the choke in the gun). I guess this was their way of verifying POA/POI. I guess I should have specified slugs when I said it was hitting 5" to the right at 50 yards.

Thanks for the mag spring suggestions. I will go long at first.... like 14" of compression.
-
How much mag spring compression are you guys using? About 8-10 inches is what I was thinking. My +5 MXT came in today, now just waiting for my 24" M3000 to arrive.
-
Are you loading dueces or quads?
Neither at this point, just old school 4x4's. Of course that could be why I am content with the amount that I have removed.
-
As you can see, I cut mine a little different than other folks. I cut with the miter saw and then beveled the whole cut with an angle grinder(belt sander would work just as well). I then smoothed it out with a file and 400 grit sand paper and rubbed in some oil.
I went conservative with my cutting. I can always cut more later.
-
iowashooter: I used a Dewalt 10" compound miter saw. It does leave a little bit of a burr on the edge, but cuts it very straight. I used a file to clean up the burr.
GreenDragon. I will be there Sat. And yes, Remington does sell forearms. I checked with them before I shortened my VM buttstock.
-
Mark, how do you cut the forearm back? Would you use files or sandpaper on a Dremel? I've yet to find a how-to on this.
A miter saw works excellent for this. I used a miter saw, a Dremel, a file and sand paper. Then rub some oil on it and it almost looks factory.
-
That is fantastic. Thanks for the extra effort to draft it out!
Agreed. Thanks a million.
-
OK now, which follower fits this gun and is stock follower really causing problems? I don't recall Patrick mentioning upgrading the follower in his article.
-
Mine came with IC, Mod, and XFT.
Thanks.

Glad to see Remington has done this! Great for them, the VersaMax line, and for those of us who shoot VersaMax.
Does the Remington 3-Gun version come with a full length, one-piece mag tube (like Mark's Versa Tube?) or is it the typical 5-shot metal tube with a metal extension piece screwed onto the end of it?
Are the new lifters available as individual parts that one can purchase to modify a different version of the VersaMax?
It comes with a one piece mag tube.
The upgraded lifters will be available sometime this year according to a conversation that I had with a Rem rep on the phone last month.

What choke comes in these guns? I just ordered a 24" M3000 today. +5 is on the way from Shooters Connection.
Also, I have read that M1 and Ber/Ben Mobil chokes both fit. Are they the same?
-
I actually sent my VM back almost two weeks ago because it was shooting about 5" to the right at 50yds and the top of my rib was machined at an angle the full length of the barrel. I suspect that is what you are saying too. Look at where the rib matches up to the barrel, mine matched up right on, but the flat on the top of the receiver isn't parallel with the top of the vent rib.... its not even close(I posted a photo in post on this site a few weeks ago). I do admit to being picky.
In all honesty, I will be a little surprised if the replace my barrel. And if they do replace it, I suspect that the new barrel will also be machined at an angle. The only two other VM tacticals that I have seen were milled at an angle too(I discovered this after I sent mine off). I am just ready to have my gun back and shoot the thing. I'm not happy about the top of the rib being slanted, but I will learn to overlook it.

I just spoke with my LGS that carry's Stoeger. They called their supplier and found out that they have "a bunch" of 24" M3000 (item # 31832) in stock. Price is $499. If I don't find one locally today, I plan to order one.
-
On the Stoeger website, the 24" M3000 is labeled as "NEW". It is model 31832. I have seen several 24" M3500 at a LGS for a cash price of $520. I suspect that the 24" would be the same.
I too am trying to hold out for a 24" M3000.

Maybe the Shot Show will bring forth more info.

Thanks for sharing. I might have to try that on my VM. That's a heck of a lot easier than cutting for a 10/22 sight.[
Hi Viz sights are all I use on my shotguns. I have the Comp Sight, Flame Sight and a few if the inexpensive magnet sights. I'm not a big fan of rear sights cause the tend to catch my attention and slow me down. I use this setup on the rear of my vent rib. The triangle is painted.

From what I have seen on here and in person, the vent rib is off on the majority of them. Some have issues with it, some don't. When someone told me about it I checked mine and sure enough it was off but my poa/ poi is great so I just left it. Mine isn't enough to affect aiming etc... but when I look hard I can see it is off ( vent rib not perfectly true to barrel )
Since sending mine off, i have seen two other VM tacticals and both of them had vent ribs that were tilted. I also saw a VM field model and the top of its rib was perfectly perpendicular to the bore/receiver. So the problem seems to be on the tactical model but not the field model.
Being a machinist, I tend to be a little perfectionistic and I tend to notice things like this(eventually). I don't understand how the QC department of a large company like Remington allows this . . . especially on $1200 shotgun.

I picked up my M3000 today. 1349xxx is a no go with the Nova nut. I am going to order an MOA nut from Openclassterror tonight. Something interesting that I noticed is that the ID of the stock nut is smaller than the ID of the Nova nut. This confirms what MOA says about it being a thread pitch problem. A big thanks to MOA Precision for making these nuts.
The mag spring retainer fairly easy to remove with snap ring pliers.
The loading port width(.900") is nearly identical to my Versamax(.910"). it just needs to be opened up.
