  1. I run a Spartan with 10lb Wolff recoil and 17lb ISMI main spring. Dawson NO-Gap magwell and Tripp mags with Dawson base pads. I too filed the bottom of stock extended ejector to clear slammed mags. Dawson .100 FO front sight and extended mag release button that my gunsmith supplied me from his box of extra parts.

Load is a 135RN Bear Creek moly bullets is 4.0 WST at 1.150 OAL. Chronos right at 1000 FPS on my personal chrono and and officially at several matches right at 1020.

How is the smoke with this load. I also use moly and have been serching for "the" load. BTW, 135gr moly with W231 is NOT the answer.

  2. Both are nice optics. I bought an MTAC earlier this year and I am very happy with it. I have used it in 3gun practice and matches out to 425 yards. I never use the illumination because I see no need to. But if I wanted to, it would likely not be bright enough on a bright day. I had the chance to shoot a Vortex in a side match this past weekend. Its a very nice scope, but I prefer the reticle of the Mtac for 3gun and carbine matches. Also, when I was scope shoping, I wouldn't even consider a scope with exposed turrets.

FWIW, I went with an American Defense mount with no regrets.

  3. Thanks for giving your time. I did ok on that stage considering I have only shot a revolver once or twice. I was 28.71 and 3 down. I for sure could have been faster, I had trouble getting my gun out of the bag. I thought for a minute I was just going to have to shoot it off! :surprise:

Your welcome. This was my first time SOing the AL state.

28.71 with 3 down was a pretty good run on that stage. Best time was 20.43 and the worst was 68 seconds.

  4. The match was great. Thanks to everyone who helped make it possible. The club cagc made a nice donation to wounded warriors too.

I thought it was a great match too. It was a tough match but there was nothing too rediculous like last year. I am anxiously awaiting the results. :surprise:

BTW, I was an SO on stage 3(revolver in the van). I noticed some interesting things watching the different shooters go through.

  5. Well, I didn't get a chance to do a comparison side by side as I ended up selling the Vortex before the Burris arrived.

As I stated before, I liked the Vortex stadia lines in that you could do some distance calculations with it and it seemed quite robust in nature. That along with Vortex's warranty makes it an awesome buy.

In looking at the MTAC and not having shot with it yet, I find the reticle to be easier to use and not as cluttered. The BDC seems much easier to use as well but the dots are pretty small and like the Vortex, they can be lost sometimes in certain backgrounds.

Overall, I think the MTAC will be more suitable for 3 gun matches than the Viper PST and it as a lot of great feedback from others who use it. I can't wait to try it out.

    Thanks for all the input.

I have used my MTAC in a match for the first time last month. We had targets ranging from close up to 125 yards. I won the 125 yard stage. I am happy with the MTAC. Also, as others have stated, I didn't even turn on the illumination.

  6. I went with the ADM because it was highly recommended. The Bobro was another one that was recommended and both were supposedly better than the Larue mount or the PEPR mount. Just my two cents though. I have no experience with the Nightforce mount.

I went with the AD over the Larue because there is more surface area on the quick release that contacts the AR upper. That being said, I feel that the Larue is a fantastic mount too.

I started with the PERP, but I sent it back because it was esthetically unpleasing to me. I do however feel that the PERP is a solid mount and an excellent bang for your buck.

  7. Great pic of Vogel on the last issue of Front Sight with his "tea with the Queen" reload happening. Its a good pic, new mag almost in spent mag barely out and a piece of smoking brass about even with his belt.

I wonder if he does this because he has small hands and has to shift his grip to press the mag release. I have to do the same thing because I cannot fully reach the mag release without slightly shifting my grip.

My appologies for furthering the thread drift.

  8. I guess my post brings another element to the equation:

To those of you who have in fact used both, what fiber optic width style/sight were you using at the time that you swore off the FO?

I have used Hi-Viz which is horrible due to the size of the FO. I much prefer the .040" Dawson FO if using a FO sight, but for the last year or so I have been happier with irons. I have experimented with the Dawson some since switching to irons, but I still favor black irons.

  9. Thanks for putting up this thread guys. Ordered my new MTAC today to make my transition to Tac-optics. Got it for $360 shipped off eBay

    Thats a good price. Enjoy.

After shooting "irons" for several years, I am looking forward to shooting my first match with my MTAC tomorrow.

I have a Spartan 45 that has been very reliable. I have a little over 3K of RN and RDFP through it. I recently tried some Bear Creek 200gr moly loaded to 1.250 OAL. I had 1 out or 4 FTF. The noses were getting caught on the feedramp. I have been told by many that if a 1911 wont feed SWC, then there is a problem with the gun.

Is my OAL too long? The crimp is about .03 behind the bullet shoulder.

    Any suggestions?

Ryan, recently made the same move in my STI Trojan. did a 50/50 load of 100. 50 with lee fcd and 50 with dillon tcd. 2 of 50 with lee die had the same issue that you are having. the 50 with the tcd did not. Definitely make sure that there is an ever-so-slight lip above the case mouth and taper crimp, continue testing until the case will fall into the chamber and sit flush.... then see if it will fall out without any jostling. I dont know about your spartan, but my trojan can be a picky B.

    Thanks for sharing Wes.

  11. I love the reticle. In competition, it is rare to have anything smaller than a 3 MOA target. Anything that is set up for 1X shooting will be MUCH large than that. Anything with any medium distance (plate racks at 100yds, small flashers) will be 6-8 MOA, I typically go to a 2x. At 4x for the longer stuff, but by then you are shooting 300yds or more, where the reticle gets closer to 1MOA.

I certainly would not mind a slightly smaller center dot (say 1.5 MOA) but I cannot complain. For everything I use it for, its awesome.

Thanks Kevin. I mounted the scope tonight with a AD Recon. I will likely feel better after getting to the range with it.

  12. I just got my Mtac yesterday. Very nice scope. It does almost everything I want. I have also realized that what I think is the perfect doesn't exist. This Mtac is almost the perfect scope to me. I think I would prefer a reticle more like the CMR with (1MOA dot and thinner ring). This is my first 3-gun optic(I've shot Iron sights for years.)

But my question is why do you think that they make the dot so big (2.4MOA)? Doesn't that mean that at 1x the dot will be almost 10 MOA(10" at 100 yards)?

Sell me on this reticle. I really want to be content with this scope. I like everything else about it, just not sure about the reticle.
