  1. I have never tried the AR gold so I don't know how they are. I have heard bad things about the timney and RRA match triggers. I have worn out a Knight Armament trigger and two Williams trigger speciality set trigger set ups. Geissele has been very good for me but I won't bad mouth the the AR Gold that I have no trigger time on. I won't bad mouth JP either. They have an excellent feel when setup properly and was the first of the good AR triggers. Which trigger is the best is some what subjective.

Thats interesting, I was going to suggest a RRA match trigger. I have had mine for some time now and been very pleased with it after 3100 rounds. In fact, I am about to build another AR and install the same trigger.

  2. I tried the shorter(1.230) OAL and the problem persisted. The nose of the bullet is hanging where the feed ramp transitions to the barrel ramp. I feel like the barrel ramp could be "tweeked" to fix the problem. I will likely send the gun back to STI.

Try cast round nose instead of SWC. I had the same problem using Truncated Cone cast 230 grain bullets. Problem stopped after switching to 230 grain cast Round nose.

I have shot 3700 rounds of 200gr and 230gr round nose through this gun and it has been great with those.

  4. I had a bunhc of feeding problem earlier this year with both of my 1911s and SWC bullets finally gave up and swtiched to RN and they both feed like a champ. It was weird bc it was the same ammo as last year.

This is kind of where I am headed. If I have one ounce of trouble out of the 50 SWC that I have loaded to the new OAL, I am going back to RN.

  5. OP, when you state " The noses were getting caught on the feedramp ", are you referring to a 3-point jam?

I've found on my Kimbers, that if my crimp was too much, I would get a lot of 3-pt-jams. My crimp for 200gr SWC and RNF is .4695 - .470, and they run perfectly. When I crimp looser, around .472 - .473, my Kimbers would choke on the 200gr SWC.

3 point jams are not quite what I was getting. From what I recall, the nose of the bullet was hitting the feedramp and not hardly even beginning to be stripped out of the mag. After thinking about it, I wish I knew what mag I was using. I have only had one range trip using SWC. I was not prerared to troubleshoot this issue. Next time, I will look more closely to try to see exactly what was happening.

Other things to consider; I am using the stock recoil spring(3K rounds old) and my feedramp has been polished.

  6. Thanks guys. I have loaded up 50 rounds like you have stated. I will try them soon.

Do you feel that they are just as reliable as RN bullets? I must say that I am a little leary of them now. If RN will feed 1000 rounds without a hitch and SWC will only feed 990 rounds without a hitch, then I will want to go with RN.

  7. I have a Spartan 45 that has been very reliable. I have a little over 3K of RN and RDFP through it. I recently tried some Bear Creek 200gr moly loaded to 1.250 OAL. I had 1 out or 4 FTF. The noses were getting caught on the feedramp. I have been told by many that if a 1911 wont feed SWC, then there is a problem with the gun.

Is my OAL too long? The crimp is about .03 behind the bullet shoulder.

    Any suggestions?

  8. I loaded up and shot my first Bear Creek SWC through my Spartan today and had issues. I loaded 1.250 OAL with a .470 crimp. I had about 1 out of every 3-4 shots hanging on the nose of the lead(didn't appear to be the case) against the feedramp. A fellow reloader suggested shortening my OAL some. So, I have shortend the OAL to 1.230 and will try them soon.

  9. it seems I am not aligning the top of the sights like I'm supposed to, instead I'm just place the fiber optic dot in the rear notch. Being as the fiber optic dot is larger I am raising the front sight so I can see the entire dot in the rear sight notch - causing me to shoot high.

This is exactly the habbit I fell into when using FO.

  10. I'm sure it is quicker for just winging lead... until you retrain your eye to see what its supposed to.

I won't even consider fiber now. Anytime I get the opportunity to shoot someone elses' rig, I'm shocked at how much information the fiber is robbing me of. Its wildly distracting and it LIES. Certainly your miles may vary, but this thread is better than 2 years old and I've never once thought I should go back.

After shooting fiber optic sites for quite some time, I have switched to black and am very content with black sites. Something that I noticed is that the size of fiber makes a huge difference. I recently shot a friends G17 with a Hi-Viz front sight. I was blinded by the fiber optic on that sight. A much smaller fiber like on the Dawson is desireable. But I still prefer black sights(for now).

  11. The DPMS is one of the RSB's that I was looking at.

I ended up ordering the Armalite clamp on because its $55 cheaper(after shipping).

With your mad machining skills, you could go the same route I did. I got a .635 ID front sight base and had Chuck Haynes open it up to match my barrel. I've got a Sabre fluted barrel and it steps from .730 to .705 if I remember correctly.

Chuck used a mill to open up the ID of the FSB and put in set screws on the bottom. He also slightly dimpled the barrel to match. It's solid and I'm pleased with it but he said it was a bear to work with since there are no flat surfaces on an FSB.

If I had it to do over, I'd probably go with the JP or Armalite clamp on version as suggested.

Last I looked, Kurt Miller and Bruce Piatt were these rear sights from DPMS. I believe I remember Kurt mentioning that he had an extra picatinny slot cut in his upper receiver to move the sight to the rear as far as possible.

Thanks for the complement John. If I still had my original FSB entact, I would have modified it to work like Chuck did on yours. But I cut off the top part of the original FSB above the gas tube to install the rifle length hand gaurd. I still have the top part of the sight with the original parts to put in the Armalite FSB when it arrives.

  12. The JP has a better finish/machining and is stainless, might include the small parts. The Armalite clamp-on A2 sight base is cheap but it works well, just don't forget to order the detent, detent spring, and the front sight.

I actually have those parts from the top part of my original front sight. I cut off the top part above the gas tube so I could put on the rifle length rail.

    I will PM Kurt. Thanks

  13. Go to Armalite's sight and search clamp on. The sight will come up. If you clamp it to the barrel it may need a thin shim cut to fit. I used a beer can and it worked very well. Hope to see you at Steel City rifle matches sometime.

The armalite can be shimmed. BUT, if you remove a little material from in between where the clamping bolts pull the bottom of the sight together, it will clamp tight on a 0.720. I am NOT a machinist, but the armalite is $45 and the JP is $120.

My barrel is .740 so I won't have a problem. Even with my discount, the JP is still $105 from Brownells. I don't see how the JP would be any better. They look to be the same style and are both forged.

Found the sight. Thanks a million. I plan on order one of those.

Thanks Sono, Where might I find a beer can? :)

I shoot major IDPA matches(and a few monthly) and most of David Tapp's matches at Steel City. I was at David's 2 guns match on April 30. I will also be at the Tac Rifle Championship in Oct. Hope to see you there too.

  16. Hmmm, its sounding like it may not matter if they have a "don't care if we do business" attitude. If their shirt is better at keeping you cool, then it may be worth it.

I just know that our group bought 12 custom shirts(almost $1200) from them and our contact person said that they felt like we were a bother to them. Thats not a way to do business.
