  1. Do make sure you have the equipment and can configure it to support what is described in all stages and that it doesn't impact you shooting Do make sure you have your extra choke tubes for the shotgun, some of those no shoot plates may be tight shot and require tighter than normal choke options Do pattern your shotgun and know how far to hold off at a variety of distances to be able to knock over a plate and to not knock over the plate (if it were a no shoot) Do bring some heavier shot and loads for shotgun, (#6 heavy), just in case you need them for a particular target or array Slings on guns, practice getting in and out of them with all your gear required for the stage and no knocking your pistol, mags etc out of holders or snagging sling, be aware of muzzle while doing all this Make sure you have enough extra ammo space to support the stages described and where you will put it and how you will get to it, mainly shotgun issue Do think about how you will address some of the optional targets, pistol or shotgun, depends on your skill and magazine capacity Do think about how many shots you will take at rifle targets before deciding you are digging a hole if you are not able to hit them, you have to engage them all to not get the FTE penalty, but don't run out of ammo on one and FTE and miss the others, etc, 3 rounds is usually a good mark to follow, though I have been known to reload and continue as I hate to leave anything unhit and I know I can do it, but sometimes thats not the best thing for your score Do decide if you are going to safe your guns when done with them or fully unload them, not something you want to decide under the clock and stress Other than that most decisions will have to wait until you see it Best of luck and see you there Jeff
  2. If we get someone to make camo clays will they be tactical/ practical? Or perhaps they need to be incoming instead of going up, like a grenade coming in
  3. Guess you don't need the lime anymore, you have a different white pwder, now I have to check Brownells to see if they have snowshoes
  4. I gotta roll with Kurt on this one too, flying clays are to inconsistent to be included in a major match, in presentation, and scoring. I think they are fun, I love to shoot them , but I have yet to be to a match that they were successfully applied, they are always an issue weather its raised or not. When matches are won and lost bu single digit points and overall placement determined by less, there is no room for these inconsistencies I too love shooting and we all appreciate the time and efforts of ROs like you Scott, giving so much to so many matches, but I also vote with my Match decisions when I run or design stages for a matcha nd I have never put one in a major match. happy Halloween Ya'll jeff
  5. White powdered lime is the heat, giving target visibility and allowing shooters see where the misses are going and correct which is usually hidden by huge plastic backers, how do folks learn and correct when they can;t see where they are missing? duh! great news Larry
  6. USPSA has a purpose we need to be a part of IPSC, but no need to be more restictive than the rules they have in IPSC, free open, I am pretty sure a modified division shotgun in IPSC can hold more rounds than a USPSA Open, hmmm
  7. 1 Consistent target presentation (no arieal clays- I love shooting them but are an ROing/MD nightmare, presentation changes, coming off broken, etc) 2 Lots of real cars and house clearings with any gun 3 Wide open full size poppers close together with the shotgun, TV loves it too 4 Fast course reset so you are not too tired to enjoy the evening with all your friends 5 The look on a newer shooters face when he/she does a great job completing a stage after you gave them some good advice, now you know they are as hooked as you 5.1 Sharing the sport and precious time with friends, old and new 5.2 Meeting the great ladies and gentlemen of the country and others 5.3 Tavelling everywhere and finding you have friends there due to shooting Priceless!
  8. SMSI You have pretty much hit the nail on the head in all 5 comments, the MD and the match planning drive the 3 numbered comments, good planning and experience make all of those relatively easy to address, as we all know you will never make everyone happy but it is relatively easy to make the masses happy if proper attention is applied. And I too am grateful for all those that work matches and using a local match as a test bed allows for gaining the experience of what will and not work and the timing of certain stages or portions there of, if it won't work at the local level it probably will be a disaster at a large event, the devil is in the details and having a good team,
  9. Jamie, think I disagree with you here, I think fun is not overused it is most important. I think you can have fun while being challanged, while relaxing, and certainly while shooting matches with your friends, I think it is required. If folks quit having "fun" our sport will die. This thread obviously ties in with Jesses on what sucks the fun out of matches, which really comes right down to things that frustrate or piss us off, but thats another topic, however as we all know very little negative critisism is ever posted on here as no one wants to be that guy and its always easier to criticize than it is to design, staff, setup and run a match. Fun happens when you have a great weekend challenging yourself in the company of your friends and hundreds of other like minded people, when the entire weekend has been well planned, scheduled, designed, staffed and the average competitors have been considered as the customers to the event and they look back and smile when its over. Doing a great job shooting a stage doesn't happen by accident and neither does a great match in our sport, but fun is at the mercy of every RO, stage design, and Match Director, it is there to be had or trampled, sometimes we can smile through issues with the great attitudes most shooters have and sometimes that just isn't possible Fun in matches has been cyclic over the last 20 years of shooting, it comes and goes; as carnival shoots, people, difficulty and other factors have changed. I hope the current trend I have seen and hopefully been a part of new matches putting more "fun" back in our game continues! I'll see all of you at some of the fun matches jeff
  10. Jan will be here before we know it, time to gear up, practice, try it all out on some deer and be ready to take it all back up to Rockcastle for another round of precision in the wind and weather Not to mention the new Trooper class competition that has to hump its gear all over the place for 2 1/2 days, the stage is set now we just need all the characters! see ya there in the hills jc
  11. Not suprising I have to agree with with ol' mr. weakhand on everything he said, and also being one of the guys that has been doing this since the SOF days there are lots of reasons any match fills or doesn't, is good or bad. Most of which comes down to who is running and helping run the match, and consistency and experience here most times helps that immensely. As you see at most successful outlaw 3 Gun matches, we network and colaborate with others to help with decisions, stage designs, new ideas. Trying to do it all in a vaccumm is seldom successful. That is a big plus for the range and folks running this match, the more 3 gun experience the staff and RO's can get in this arena and having RO's with the right attitudes will continue to make this match better and better each year. They are receptive and working hard to make it the match we all want it to be, a true nationals and a fun time! And Daniels gun can't be a wildcat, as the rules for Tac Optics don't allow prototypes, all guns must be factory configured to promote an level playing field.
  12. Could mean a few less of the high visibility sponsored shooters, yippeeee, oops, I meant we will miss you guys and gals, sorry you can't make it, but who wants to go to Chicago for an NRA show, really, Chicago seriously, I wouldn't spend a dime to go up there
  13. Jesse, there you go looking at the big picture again, it's not all about you!
  14. Why's everybody picking on me, no really, I feel the love and it is greatly appreciated. However I will be working on a new contract next year and work load will be greater than what I had this year and unfortunately I don't think I will be able to be the Match Director for this match again. I won't put my name on anything that I am not willing to make an absolute success and I just can't afford that much of my time on this again next year, but the template has been forged so it should be much easier for whomever picks up that torch. That is not to say that the match won't happen, it was a team effort with Joe D., Nick and Nate and our great sponsors so they can and probably will make it happen again, I hope so. So you guys need to start working on Nick/ Nate to work out the details and all of you can volunteer to help. I just hope I have enough time to shoot this one and some of the others I gave up to make this years match happen. I think the match was a tremendous success and thank you all for your support, that of the RO's, staff and sponsors. I don't think any other match has managed as many views, hits, video or comments across the web, that I think is how we put our sport on the map, let everyone else see the fun and make sure we are advertising for our sponsors and the sport will grow. thanks all, see you soon Jeff 2011 3 Gun Pro AM MD (Ret.)
  15. Did one in Ga earlier this year and doing TN this weekend, good fun, bring extra cash for the after festivities
  16. How about checking out these sites, the natural movements and explosiveness are there to make good shooting movements and a healthy overall life, I've trained with some of them and done some Crossfit, I think a blended approach is needed, just like our shooting skills, put it all in your toolbox use what you need when you need it http://www.crossfitfootball.com/ http://movnat.com/ http://www.marksdailyapple.com/ http://www.fifth-ape.com/ Its working for me, see you at the range jc
