  1. Aluminum versus Steel . This generally boils down to what I can lay my grubby little hands on when I need something right now . I have both aluminum and steel bases and rings and have no problems . That being said , I have never had my gear dropped into a Hot LZ out of the back of one of our Militaries fine flying machines or exploded by enemy ordnance . Of course if that were the case you would probably be using whoevers stuff wound up being the lowest bidder .
  2. Do I simply need to purchase the 8 round tube from Brownells and be done with it ?? Or are there other peices I need to pick up as well ? My Dad picked one up and I would like to surprise him with a little something for it .
  3. Glens rings rock . Have a set on the M1A and they are seriously beefy . Glen is also a really nice guy and has spent serious time on the phone with me holding my hand through rifle building projects and helping me Bed my first rifle all for Free . He also donates a lot of Schwag to prize tables and is a serious competitor in his own right . I also have Badgers and T.P.S. products . I have T.P.S. on my AR and it got beat pretty hard yesterday in a 3-gun match and still held a zero with no problems .
  4. Here is a write up I did on a Cheap , custom rig that will get you going in MOR . Due to recent budget deficits at my house I was forced to sell my beloved GAP rifle . My wife was quite insistent that I put aside some money and get a rifle that will get me through until I can afford to build another dream rifle . With that in mind I started thinking about the new Stevens 200 rifles and what a good starting point it would make for an inexpensive rifle build . To that end I went to my local Sportsman's Warehouse and picked up a .243 version of the Stevens 200 that just so happened to be on Sale so I walked out the door new rifle in hand for $259.05 . The plan is to use Dads new machine shop and some Value priced quality parts to put together a rifle that will run with the "Big Boys" on a budget just about anyone can afford . First things first Dad and I built our own barrel vise on his mill and removed the barrel . Then it was off for home to put some ads up on the Internet . I sold the barrel for 65 bucks plus shipping and the stock for 41 bucks plus shipping which means my action cost me a grand total of 153.05 . Below you will find a parts list of the pieces I put together for my build along with prices that include shipping . Rifle-259.05 Seekins Scope Base-85.00 SSS competition trigger-87.25 Lothar Walther prefit barrel in .308-282.50 Recoil Lug from Stockade-32.00 HS Precision Take Off Stock-225.00 Wheeler Engineering Barrel Wrench-41.79 With the sale of the barrel and stock this brings my grand total to 906.59 thus far . Here are the pics of the finished product . I still need to bed it and mount my scope but for under a Grand I have a complete custom that I built myself . I will post some pics of how it groups when I get a chance to take it to the range .
  5. I know ,I know who doesnt Love Caramel Popcorn . When I was a kid it was just my Mother and I for a long time with the occasional abusive boyfriend thrown in for giggles . But when it was just us we were Dirt Poor , like get nothing for Christmas , living in a Welfare apartment , collecting food stamps and wearing second hand clothing poor . The one thing I really remember was that my Mom and I would make home made Caramel Popcorn that was out of this world and then play Uno or Skip-Bo while eating it fresh , warm and gooey . It was the best Caramel Pocorn ever and was extrememly rich since it required 2 sticks of butter to make . Well times change and I am a grown man with my own Family . Dirt Poor was over 25 years ago for my Mother and I (Oh there have been periods of poor but not "Dirt Poor") and I had almost forgotten how good that Caramel Popcorn tasted but when we visited my Mom and Stepdad on Christmas Lo and Behold there was a pile of Fresh , Warm and Gooey Caramel Popcorn sitting there for myself and my family to enjoy . I had almost forgotten the Good times in my childhood that were few and far between but man oh man was that stuff good . Merry Christmas everyone and have a Happy New Year . I gotta go make some Caramel Popcorn with my Daughters .
  6. working in consruction I am forced to use Porta-Johns more often than i would like . If the splash back from a fairly clean one hits you I can almost guaruntee you will have a nasty case of Monkey Butt before the day is over . Thus if you are the first one in you need to make a T.P. Island for a landing zone and if you still get some splash back Zeasorb Powder works wonders . I hate Monkey Butt as well .
  7. Shotgun showed up today along with a package from Brownells with my Easyloader and safety . Next package should be from 3-gun gear and I will be ready to rock .
  8. By the way , I am a Strong Hand reloader . David Neth taught me his method a few years ago and weakhanded reloading is only good for laughs when I try it .
  9. I had my local shop order me one . 695 plus tax .
  10. Anything else you guys would ad beyond the side saddle and an easyloader ? Maybe a Ghostring rear sight ? Its been a while since I competed with a Shotgun and I know the Benelli's and Winchester SX2's are the Shit but I don't plan on setting the world on its ear with my shooting .
  11. Do my eyes deceive me or are these shotguns basically the same other than colors ? Does anyone know if they come with the elongated button on the bottom for easier shell feeding and the sidesaddle like the competition master did ? I just had my local shop order me one so I am curious what else I need to order for this sucker . I will probably go the Easyloader route and I still have my old Shotgun Shell belt so if it does not come with a Sidesaddle I will go ahead and order one from 3-gun gear . I guess its time to get on the horn to Wesselman and get some O-Rings coming as well .
  12. Yeah , this is just what USPSA needs , another division . I just pack all my guns to the range and sign up for whatever class I have the least competition in so I can win . I am all for fairness but I feel like this is just pandering to all the whiners who feel like they can't compete because of their equipment . Whatever happened to guys like Jim Wall who made GM in Limited using a single stack 1911 and kept on kicking butt with POS pistols and IWB holsters because he had practiced until he COULD . If you want a to shoot your SS 1911 , L-10 should provide you with a perfectly acceptable class .
  13. I have the cheap shotgun , just need a barrel . Mine is a 3 inch magnum with a 30 inch barrel . My problem is that any barrel with screw in chokes is either as much used or more than I can buy one new . I was originally going to cut my barrel down and have it threaded for chokes but since its a magnum barrel I would like ot keep it for duck hunting . Good call on the iron sight thing though .
  14. All right , the barrel I was watching on ebay went out of my price range so I am looking at buying a new one for my 1100 . My choices are either the 21 inch slug barrel with rem chokes from Cabelas for 171.00 shipped or the Competition master barrel from Remington for 211 plus shipping . This will be a limited/tactical shotgun used USPSA and tactical style shotgun matches as well as shooting Upland game birds in the fall .
  15. Here is the deal . Go find a used Rem 1100 at the pawn shop or local gun store (I have paid as little as 150 and as much as 225) for your platform . 20 Gauge is nice but you have to jump through some hoops to keep it legal so I would advise that you go with 12 Gauge . You can order a extended mag tube and an easyloader from Brownells and a 3-gun gear side saddle from 3 gun gear . If your barrel is over 22 inches find a gunsmith locally who can shorten it and rethread it for removable chokes (anywhere from 55-100 bucks) . I recommend having it cut to 22 inches as a few matches (non USPSA) will not allow lengths of over that and just modifying the rib . If no smith is available you can order a replacement 21 inch deer slug barrel with removable chokes for something on the order of 160 bucks (or watch Ebay or Gunbroker for a used one) which will net you a set of iron sights for slug use as well . A single bead sight can work fine but a double bead sight or a set of adjustable irons is nice on slug stages . Oversized bolt handles and safeties are not mandatory to be competitive but if you want to ad them its cheap enough to do . I generally dont run them but its personal preference and I have been shooting an 1100 while hunting Upland birds for quite a few years and I like it sans oversized safeties and bolts . You should be able to build a very serviceable shotgun for 450-500 bucks and if you decide you want to get rid of it you can get most if not all of your money back . I shot my home built 1100 against Jim Wall and David Neth in its first match ever a couple years ago and they were the only ones I came in behind . I am guessing that my skill had a lot more to do with it than their shotguns vs. mine . One last small investment you should make is to buy 20 O-rings from Eric Wesselman so that you can replace them at the drop of a hat .
  16. Not sure if it makes any difference when building a Rem 1100 for 3-gun use but I picked up a 3 inch magnum model on the cheap and was wondering if there is anything special I need to know about building it versus a 2 3/4 inch version ? I did a search and came up with Nada . Thanks in advance for yor help.
  17. The Easyloader is NOT covered anywhere in Patrick Sweeneys book . Might do a search for it on Google .
  18. Just curious what the difference between the 1100 and 11-87 shotgun are . I am looking for a new shotgun and have owned several 1100's but was wondering what set the 11-87 apart from the 1100 and is it better ?
  19. My problem with lightweight 2 Piece or even one-piece mounts is that I have had my scope knocked out of alignment several times with the cheaper and lighter mounts . I finally switched to TPS rings and Base on my hunting rifle and you can beat the crap out of it and not lose your zero . Nothing worse than pulling your rifle out of the rear window rack only to find the rear windage adjustment on your Leupold base has one screw broke off . In my opinion I dont understand why you would want to put 30 bucks worth of rings and bases on a 500 dollar rifle with another 500 dollar scope and risk your vacation time you took to go hunting by cheaping out on the parts that integrate the 2 .
  20. I got on the list months ago and my rifle just happened to be at GAP when they came in . Contact George Gardner at GAP and ask if anyone didnt follow through on buying their bottom metal and if so could you pick it up . There were only 85 in this first run , the marines got 20 , the FBI got 20 and GAP got the rest .
  21. Local shop had one of the McMillan Bros. .50 cals that looked a lot like yours Zak . I just couldnt bring myself to spend more money on the rifle than I did on my car Would be fun to have when we go out to SD to shoot Prairie Dogs next year however
  22. Yes sir , it is a .308 . Always forget something important .
  23. Eric Reid at GA Precision built this for me . Schneider #7 Contour 24 inch barrel , Badger Ordnance Recoil Lug , BO scope base and rings , Leupold 6.5-20X50 MK4 scope , 2pound trigger , Pillar bedded McMillan A3 stock and the all new BO detachable magazine bottom metal . Only shot 25 rounds for brake in and have not had time to do any load development but 5 shot groups are hanging under a 1/2 inch with 168 grain Nosler J4's and Varget .
  24. For those of you who wanted more pictures of the Bottom Metal here goes .. These 2 are of the DBM installed Here is one with the magazine removed And the complete set up removed The replacement Torx head screws are an improvement over the strip-o-matic factory screws to say the least .
  25. Finished my 1st year of the electrical apprenticeship yesterday . I didnt do as well on my final as I had hoped but managed to finish the year with a 94% average . My class is very competitive when it comes to grades and that wound up leaving me with the 5th highest grade in the class . The upside is that they had to go out 2 decimal points to figure the top 5 On to second year and AC theory . This is probably gonna hurt me more than it will hurt you The pay cut I took to start over in a new industry has kept me out of the IPSC picture for the last year but with some pay increases on the horizon and decreases in my childcare costs hopefully next year will see me back on the IPSC radar
