  1. I will have mine up in a day or so. I was going to try to upload from the motel, but the internet conection was wonky,. It was an awesome match. We had typical MO weather, from steaming hot to freezin butt cold in the space of 2 days, and the mud made things sporting, but overall everything went mostly according to plan....
  2. Maybe I was being hasty.... I'd love to be the first kid on the block to have one of these.
  3. On page 8 of the Sept/Oct Front-sight magazine, there is an advertisement for "Fred Craig's all new... .22 micro mag?" and it looks cool, but when I google this or try to pull up the website, I get bupkis. The website supposedly is www.atomitronx.com, but when you try to go there you get a total pop-up infested, "this domain for sale" mess. Does anyone know anything about the Gunsmith, the caliber or the gun?
  4. Ok, I am a singlestack/he-man/heavy metal shooter so this is only intellectually relevant to me, but I did have a question. Would this rifle configuration be limited legal? Specifically I am asking about the cmore tactical sight. Personally, I would think since the sights are in the same plane, it shouldn't make much of a diffence, as compared to a 45 degree offset mount [like JP] ironsight.
  5. Ok, I get I need a chrono, but I can't afford one before I go to the next match, and I also don't have the time or availability to shoot it at range to see where it hits. My options are simply this: zero somewhere between 0 and 50m [the longest range I have available, right now] and then have some type of guess how far my BSZ is good for, and at what point I need to mess with my sights. I know it's not optimal, but it's as good as I can do with what I have, so it will be good enough. So, a little more research on my paet yielded 2 separate places that placed the SA BC at around .350 and the SWAG of 2500fps velocity. A quick trip to Hornady's ballistic calc tells me: Input Variables Firearm type Rifle Sight Height 1.5 Bullet Weight (grains) 147 Ballistic Coefficient .350 Muzzle Velocity (fps) 2500 Range (yards) Muzzle 50 100 200 300 400 500 Velocity (fps) 2500 2378 2259 2032 1819 1622 1444 Trajectory (25 yd. zero) -1.5 1.1 2.2 -0.9 -12.4 -34.5 -69.9 Trajectory (50 yd. zero) -1.5 0.0 -0.0 -5.4 -19.2 -43.6 -81.3 This tells me a 25 yard zero will stand me in good stead out to 300, and at 400 I am still aiming at the top of the plate. 3 gun isn't benchrest and my relative shooting skill [or lack thereof] will have more of an effect than any slight miscalculation here... Tahnks for y'all's help./
  6. That's part of the problem, I have no idea what South African 7.62 does out of a 16" barrel. That is part of what I am asking.
  7. I have me a brandy new DPMS AP4 .308 rifle and I am thinking of trying it out in Heavy Metal. My question involves zeroing. With a 5.56 and a 16" bbl, I know 50M gets me out to 250m, and with 5.56 and a 20" bbl 25M gets me 300M. Currently I have either 25M or 50M available to zero at [or pretty much any range under 50M, I guess] and I am using SA 147FMJ 7.62. I do not have access to a chrono, so I can't give y'all velocity, but I figure I cannot be the first guy to shoot SA through a 16" bbl gun. So, what range should I zero at for a BSZ, and where does the buller re-cross my LOS?
  8. Actually, that was the last one, ther aren't going to be any more 3 gun matchess at lefthanders.
  9. Asked this over on Arfcom, and lookie what I found... I think I could work with that.
  10. So, I am sitting here with my kinda-gun saavy girlfriend, and I am cleaning guns while we watch TV. Somehow the question comes up about why I don't use my 458 SOCOM AR in HEAVY METAL class in 3 gun competition. So I got to thinking, why not? Reloading for .458 isn't much more expensive than for .308. I can get 19-20 rounds into my nordic-extention P-mags. Shooting distance might be a bit more sporting, but with good sights, a good range card and a laser rangefinder, it shouldn't be too bad. For mixed range work, a mix of rounds can be tailored to POI if required. 308 and .458S recoil are comparable. Steel hits will certainly be positive... It will be easy to tell which brass is mine. So it comes down to this: The best reason I can come up with *not to try this is I need to put open sights on my .458 to be legal...which isn't much of a reason not to.
  11. Back to the slug question for a moment, what distance are we looking at for those slugs, and what are we going to be shooting at?
  12. HOLY SHIT Ruf, 20 slugs..........you lost your mind? It was 33..... Soooo, who wimped out and lowered it?
  13. Ok, I have a .308 AP4, with a flattop, and a fixed front sight. I think I want a low power [1-4x] variable scope in a one piece mount. What I am worried about is how badly is the Front sight going to obstruct my FOV, and will going with an illuminated reticle allow me to "work around" the front sight?
  14. Stages are set up, the range is dry, it looks like a good one. Don't forget your sunscreen!!
  15. LEFTHANDERS GUN CLUB FIFTH Sunday 3 GUN MATCH 30 MAY 2010 $10 to shoot. Setup Saturday after 1300. Stage/Safety meeting 0900 Sunday. Shooting begins directly afterward, regardless of Rain, Snow, Cold, Heat, Plague or Flood. Round counts: 4 combined arms stages. • Stage 1: 41 Rounds 20 Rifle, 3 Slugs, 12 Pistol • Stage 2: 44 rounds 16 rifle, 12 Shot, 16 pistol. • Stage 3: 38 rounds 20 Rifle, 12 Pistol • Stage 4: 27 rounds 17-21 shot, 10-14 pistol. MINIMUM Totals: 56 Rifle, 3 Slugs, 33 Shot, 54 Pistol [bring more, much more.] The Stages: I typically assemble 3-4 stages, with an emphasis on being able to efficiently operate each weapons system. You will do better with guns you are familiar with. Rifle stages consist of multiple shooting positions [standing, kneeling, prone] and both Steel Plates and MINI IPSC targets. Shotgun stages consist of steel plates, poppers and Clay pigeons in static holders. Pistol stages consist of IPSC targets and steel plates/poppers. Requirements: 1 center-fire rifle, one center-fire pistol with holster that securely retains your pistol while running and one shotgun capable of shooting both slugs and birdshot. Slings are allowed, and can be used in place of grounding on some stages with the following caveats: To sling a long gun, it must be: magazine out, empty chamber and either on safe or locked back, and the muzzle must hang down pointing within one meter of the shooters feet without breaking the 180. If the bolt closes while slung there is no penalty as long as it was initially clear. Birdshot is defined as #6 or smaller, lead shot only. Slugs must only consist of one solid lead projectile, no sabots, copper, high velocity, or other specialized projectiles allowed. There will be no magazine length or capacity restrictions. A 100 second procedural will be added for any shooter hitting a CPT with a pistol round or Shotgun Slug. [it will be pretzel-ed up]. Scoring will be done on a Modified Time Plus system. All paper targets will require 2 hits to neutralize, or one A/B hit. In addition, Major caliber rifles [.30 cal+] and pistols neutralize with a single C hit. Failure to Neutralize a paper target will result in a +5 second penalty. Paper targets with no hits on them at all will incur a 10 second Failure to Engage penalty regardless of how many rounds were aimed at the target that missed. Steel must fall to score, and standing steel will also incur a 10 second Failure to Engage penalty regardless of how many rounds were aimed at the target that missed. The only exception will be when the RO agrees there is a calibration issue and there were multiple hits on a popper and it did not fall. Turned plates do NOT qualify for this exception. Note: Any and all steel may be calibrated heavy, [requiring .45 230 ball, XM193 or 12 ga. 1-1/8oz 7-1/2, 3 dram loads or 1600fps 1oz Slugs to fall – depending on the target type] requiring multiple hits of lighter loads [example, wolf .223 or 9mm] to fall. Failure to follow stage instructions will also incur a 10 second procedural penalty per shot or per offense at the RO’s discretion. Contact Barry at barrysuperhawk [at] hot mail for more info. 16. Several of us have made a habit of going to Shakespeares Pizza in Columbia on Friday nights... So, it sounds like Going via Boonville/Fayette is the hot ticket...
  17. Sorry to be a pain, but It I follow may GPS and it leads me to a broken road, I am going to be in a world of hurt. Unfortunately, trying to follow the website directions on google maps didn't work so well, so I have no idea what raod I am supposed to be avoiding...
  18. Per the Website I have only been there a couple of times, would someone local mind taking a screenshot of a googlemap or similar and highlighting the closed road? I tried to follow along with the directions but got a tad confused... It seems that if you go through Fayette you are OK, but if you come from 63 you have to detour through someones driveway?
  19. This is a problem I deal with myself. I stick with my 8 round, .45ACP 1911 because it is legal at any match. When I go to a match that allows 10 round mags in HM, then every one that uses them has me at a competitive disadvantage. The POINT of the classification system is to match up similarly equipped shooters. I don't understand why everybody wants into HM class without having to comply with HM rules. It's not like you can't shoot a 10mm in limited, or tactical class, so why do you want to mess with our class? HM is absolutely not an arms-race classification, and I am opposed to turning it into one.
  20. Oh, good lord, I just got onto the Facebook page for this match.... and Facebook SUCKS. Sorry, but I think it's excessive to require me to make a friggin account, LOG into that account, and THEN have to type the 2 word captcha security, just to post a comment. I know Facebook is the new hot thing and everyone is doing it, but come on, what's next, tweeting scores back to the stat shack?
  21. I have done 3rd person and headcam vids, and they both have their place. My problem with the 3rd person vids is finding someone in my squad that is willing to run the camera. I have lost entire matches worth of potential video just because of d-bags in my squad that agreed to do it but did a crappy job... as a side note: I now have some RO cam footage posted up from *my* most recent shoot [in 14 degree weather, with a handwarmer banded to the camera], and will probably try to run RO cam on my stage at the O3GC if someone wants...
  22. WOW, it's about time. I hate to admit this but I had written off this match this year because of the whole USPSA multigun rule abomination. Now I have to go back and ask for another day off....
  23. You missed a poll option: x HM sould use full USPSA singlestack rules, [no more than 8 rounds in a magazine, even for a barney bullet; no speed holsters; pant seam rule, etc.] The only problem I see with 10mm in HM is "gamers" using puff loads just to get the +2 mag advantage. Many 3 gun matches don't chrono, and given the size of the average prize table, being able to skip one or two reloads over the course of a match could be worth hundreds of dollars. Require 180+ power factor and restrict it to 8 rounds in the mag, and I could get behind 10mm in HM. If you don't want a chrono, then eliminate the prize table altogeather. It's the sad fact of any competitive sport that there are always going to be competitors that skirt the ragged edge of the rules. And yes, If I was running a "big match" I would chrono everything, pistol, rifle and slugs. Kentucky has a good system, the chrono is paired up with a random draw prize table, so the time isn't wasted. Heavy metal is a very narrow class, consisting of [comparitively] low capacity, powerful guns that require the shooter to be proficient. No speedloaders, no extra-cap mags, no optics... HM is not a gamers class, it's like single stack rules in IPSC, it the IROC racing series, it's the blue colar tough guy of 3 gun, and pansies need not apply. IMHO 3 gun already has too many "different" classes it's getting alot like USPSA. I mean what - tac optics heavy ? Please. The point of classes is so people are competing against similarly equipped competitors. You can't possibly make a class for every possible combination. If you want to shoot your glock 10mm or hi-cap .45, there is already a class for you, it's called limited [or tactical]. If you want to shoot your optic equipped DPMS 308... theres already a class, its called Tactical. If you are just shooting for the fun of the match, it shouldnt matter if you arent on the bleeding edge of competitiveness...
  24. My stands are a bit different, but when I was building them, I was in a position where I had to haul EVERYTHING from my house to the range in the back of my truck for every match, so size was more of a concern than pure price. It requires: 2x1/4 flat steel x 18", with holes in the center and one end 2x1/4 flat steel x 18", with a hole in the center 2 each 1x2 11ga square tube x 6" long 1 each 1/2" x 1" bolt, 2 washers and a nylon lock nut. grease Staple 1x2 lath to the edges of an ipsc target, even with the edges. place the 2 square tubes on the ends and hold the single hole flat up centered on the 2 legs. The square tube should overlap a bit, [this lets water out]. Mark where the square tube lines up. Weld the 2 pieces square tube to the flat steel, then bolt the other flat making an X. Don't make the bolt too tight, you should be able to unfold this without tools. 1 washer goes between the flats and grease goes there too. I can fit a metric shit ton of these into a milk crate [more than I can pick up, in one instance...LOL] and they are cheap: 25' of 11ga 1x2 = $50 = ~25 targets 80' of 1/4x2 flat = $100 = ~25 targets + $25 for bolts and washers you can have 25 target stands for around $7 each. Since they are so low, they almost never get shot..
