  1. Batteries...they suck. They are never bright enough always run low when you need them and are expensive as hell. That said, I have been running a small experement with a Konus M30 Rifle Scope 1-4X 24mm Illuminated. It's a standard-ish 1-4 mildot reticle with a tiny blue illumination dot in the center. The problem is I think it's a hunting scope because on the highest setting the dot is ok indoors, but useless for anything outside until around dusk. This scope takes a standard 2032 3v lithium battery, so I decided to try the Stacker trick. I bought a sheet [under $1 each when you buy the whole sheet] of 2016 3v batteries, and have been doubling them up in the battery compartment. The dot is now eating 6V instead of 3v, but so far it doesen't seem to care. At full intensity, the dot stays above the 2032 level for better than a week [subjective, not measured with anything besides my eyeballs.] The LED has lived through 4 sets of 2 batteries, all to 100% drained. If overall the LED life is shortened from 100000 hours to say 10000, who cares? In a practical sense, I can now use the scope both eyes open outdoors on a sunny day, [like an acog] and it doesent wash out. I have been told but havent tested the rumor that the same trick can be done with a stack of hearing aid batteries on an aimpoint. I have a couple of clones [a Burris speed-dot gets burn your eyes bright with 2 2016's] and a Vortex that takes CR-2's - I wonder how a stack of 675's would fit...
  2. Well, I can definitavely say a 4MOA dot is not good medicine for 10" plates at 400-500 yards... I just lucked into one of those small Eotechs [sideways 123, standard dot/circle] so I am probably going to give it a go at Kentucky wildcat.. Somehow I have the feeling this is never going to end...
  3. Well, doesen't that just suck. I thought Tony was just screwing with me when he told me down at CMMG... Damn.
  4. I tried a Vortex...it proved to be an ill considered decision. From what I saw, the Leupold Prismatic seemed to be the hot ticket..
  5. bah, shooting better? unless you AVERRAGED 400 seconds on your first 2 stages, you are doing fiine... apparently the dot wasnt such a goog idea... and it will be weeks before i dry out
  6. Clean the guns? Bah, Never clean the guns before a match, it's bad JU-JU.
  7. THE RAIN IS HERE! [This is a screenshot] Image screencapped from here[This is the live feed]:
  8. Stage 9 was the mudfest way up front across from the CMMG shed near the parking area. The roads were worse, probably, but I think the stages were pretty close. The main reason the roads werent so bad at CMMG last year is because after that dude got his semi-pickup stuck they blocked off the road and you had to walk. 2 years ago it was dry enough that you could park within 50 yards of the shack, last year you couldn't get within 500 yards of the shack except on foot.
  9. I seem to remember someone going down on my trip to Stage 9 last year, but I cannot remember who... Jo Jo maybe? I remember it was a really good shooter and my first thought was how did he not drop his gun...
  10. Last year was so damn muddy I almost had to abandon my cart a couple times because I couldn't hardly drag it, and I am not a weak man.. I'm bringing the truck this year, and have a plan to clean my guns, cart and truck in a car wash if necessary..
  11. With the threads and discussions about 1X optics, if a shooter were to be pursuaded to switch, what options are out there? Obviously there are standard red-dots in various dot sizes, but what else is there? Please post pictures/links, especially reitcle pix if you have them. To start out, I currently have a Vortex Strikefire with a 4MOA dot. but have thought about getting an Eotech XPS 2-2 because the reticle might be useful at longer ranges: I don't know if this is a practical idea, though. I don't know if the size and spacing on the dots would give me any practical use in ranging or not. So, what else is there, and if you own what you are posting, what do you think about it?
  12. Full rubber Mud boots are likely to be a lifesaver. A good hat. Lots of oil - Rem-oil or something else in a spray, and an oily rag for wiping. Extra batteries and canned air if you have an electronic optic] Waterproof bags/boxes for any electronice [phones, cameras, etc.] A waterproof bag big enough to cover your entire range bag in case of downpour... Extra Socks In my experience, Shotgun shells are the least water resistant of the ammo we use, so a plan to keep them dry can't hurt. If you are sensitive about mud in your vehicle, then spare shoes/socks, a bag for the mud stuff and some washing water might be helpful, washing your feet in cooler water is exhilirating!
  13. Ineresting set of rules I don't see a link on their homepage...but they do say they are the 2011 rules. They also contradict some of the email updates...ie; safe abandonment and 1x in iron divisions. And I could not find a shotgun caliber requirement in any division, so looks like a 410 shotgun is legal, including Heavy Metal division (as long as its a pump). amazing... jj I think that's the webmaster's goof, if you notice, the link to the schedule still points to the squad list. Oh, well, it's not like I come to this match because it's all well-organized and pretty. Mud? What Mud? Thu May 19 Mostly Cloudy 72°-58° 10% chance of rain Fri May 20 T-Showers 77°-63° 40% chance of rain Sat May 21 Scattered T-Storms 78°-61° 60% chance of rain Sun May 22 Scattered T-Storms 78°-61° 30% chance of rain
  14. 39.209845,-92.591743 for the entrance to CMMG, assuming Google maps, Bing maps AND Yahoo all have it right. Actually, if you type CMMG into any of the map sites, they all seem to find it correctly. If you use the full address, [620B County Rd 118, Fayette, MO 65248] you end up off by a half mile or so, but on the right road: Google error, Cmmg at B NOT A the official maps are here MoDOT PDF detailing construction location
  15. Both the Schedule link and the Squad list link lead to the squad list. How about a Schedule?
  16. Can someone mspaint up a map to show where this is? I typically just follow the GPS and the roads it says to turn onto rarely match the sign, consequently I don't know if this is on my route or not..
  17. Oh, trust me Y'All will hear how it works out., I garoonn tee it. I just have to memorize the mantra: " RO, I am intending on one shot per target, hit or miss. I will ENGAGE all targets.."
  18. Well, in truth I have had my issues with longer range shots myself mostly because my FAL with irons isn't exactly a tack driver at that range.
  19. Ok, I am zeroed at 25, and I have my rangecard taped to my stock...here goes nothing.
  20. Blind? You may need a 1X optic to help you...LOL [sorry, I really couldn't resist..]
  21. Maybe for future matches, but I have 5 days, so no time to come up with anything new. Besides, the Horus talon is a 1-4x so I doubt they would let me just duct tape it on 1X and run...
  22. Ok, yes, the SA uses BT bullets, and my sight height is closer to 2.5" Here's new numbers: Input Variables Firearm type Rifle Sight Height 2.5 Bullet Weight (grains) 147 Ballistic Coefficient .401 Muzzle Velocity (fps) 2550 Temperature 59 Barometric Pressure (hg) 29.53 Relative Humidity 78% Zero Range (yards) 25 Wind Speed (mph) 0 Ballistics Table in Yards SA2 147 gr., .401 B.C. www.hornady.com Range (yards) Muzzle 50 100 200 300 400 500 Velocity (fps) 2550 2442 2337 2134 1941 1760 1591 Trajectory -2.5 2.2 5.4 6.8 0.7 -14.8 -41.5 Relative Dot 4 MOA 2" 4" 8" 12" 16" 20" Come Up in MOA -2.5 -4.1 -5.1 -3.3 -0.2 3.5 7.9 I am glad I asked, looks like I will be shooting point of aim to 300, *then* stacking at 400 and 2 dot heights at 500... I have been looking at moving to an AR10 platform since last year, and I have to start somewhere. Since CMMG last year, I have picked up 2 .308 AR's [a DPMS and the ORC] and a case of pmags in anticipation of the switch. I am familiar with the AR itself, it's going to be the optics that are going to take the adjustment. In point of fact, despite my familiarity, shooting the FAL has been frustrating too, hence my idea to switch.. If I go to a match that doesent allow optics in HM, I will probably still shoot the FAL, but the rules are evolving, and as much as it pains me, I need to evolve too. Doing it this way is just like learning to swim by parachuting into the ocean...
  23. If it's only "less Practice" and not a REAL competitive advantage, then why is it we only have this discussion about rifles? Why does any type of dot on a pistol or a shotgun still toss you into open? How is it possible that a red dot is that much of a gamechanger on 2 of our 3 guns, but no big deal on the third? Fiber optic or Ghost ring iron sights on a shotgun don't put you into open, but a Triji RMR will. What about that fancy FN45 that comes with the mini red dot milled into the slide? Is that exactly the same as the same gun with irons? To me there are 2 distinct points, #1 being the purity of the Heavy Metal class and #2 being the apparent competitive advantage bestowed by a dot. It looks like I am on the losing side here, and I probably will go along with the sheep and find a dot for my rifle.. BAAaaaah
  24. Ok, with all of the fuss about putting 1x optics in Heavy Metal, it occured to me that I just bought a bushmaster ORC in .308, so maybe I could toss a dot on it and go with the flow. My problem is I have 5 days until CMMG [PB to 400+ yard shots] and that's precious little time to be messing with a new system. So, what I have is a 16" .308 with a Votrex Strikefire 4MOA dot, and a few battlepacks of SA .308 ammo. My plan is to go tomorrow and zero this setup at 25 meters indoors. I don't have access to a chrono in this time frame, so I am going to have to guess at my velocity. A quick Google search turned up 16" velocities for SA between 2500 and 2600. The BC for the 147 is roughly .401 [again, per google]. All of this and a quick trip to Hornady's Ballistic calc gives me this data: Ballistics Table in Yards 147 gr., .401 B.C. (25 yd. zero) www.hornady.com Range (yards) Muzzle 50 100 200 300 400 500 Velocity (fps) 2500 2393 2289 2088 1898 1720 1555 Trajectory -1.5 1.1 2.3 -0.6 -11.5 -32 -64.4 Come Up in MOA -1.5 -2.2 -2.2 0.3 3.7 7.7 12.3 Range (yards) Muzzle 50 100 200 300 400 500 Velocity (fps) 2600 2491 2384 2179 1984 1800 1629 Trajectory -1.5 1.2 2.4 0.3 -9.3 -27.7 -56.8 Come Up in MOA -1.5 -2.2 -2.3 -0.1 2.9 6.6 10.8 Relative Dot 4 MOA 2" 4" 8" 12" 16" 20" If I did the guessing right, and my assumptions are correct, out to 200, I ought to be able to put the dot on the target and go. At 300, I will need to stack the dot on top of a 10" plate, and at 400 since my dot subtends to 16" and my drop is around 30", holding one full dot width above an ipsc target ought to get me on target. Am I on the right track? Did I miss anything or make any obvious errors? I normally [for the last 15 years] shoot a FAL, and this is quite a bit of change, 5 days befor a match.. Help?
