  1. You mean I'm going to be one of the few hardcore people shooting a wheelgun this year?!? If we can't count on Carmoney to run a revolver what is this world coming to? ...don't make me break a Glock out for this match Doug and gang - I will definitely be there again this year. Last year was too much fun not to come back... you've got me hooked!
  2. I'll at least be there April 5th. Thanks for putting these matches on, guys!
  3. Has anyone loaded a 170gr lead SWC bullet using e3 in .40? If so what COL were you loading at and what kind of charge were you using? I plan to use e3 with 180s mainly but I have a fair amount of the 170s laying around that need to be shot up.
  4. I've had a 800w for a bit over a month and my overall impression of it is while it COULD be a very nice unit, the amount of problems I've experienced with it keep me from recommending it to anyone. I previously had a Blackberry Curve 8330 and was pretty impressed with that phone - however, it did not wirelessly sync with MS Outlook's calendar function, which was something my work specifically wanted (and sprint told me it could do... ). I later found out that with an Enterprise Server or one of the other BB software packages that is indeed possible, albeit extremely expensive to purchase. So I went with the Treo because it could accomplish this. My initial impression of it was positive. It was a reasonable size (much more handy than the older models) and the amount of things it could do was amazing. It was fairly intuitive to use, although some things took a bit of digging to get set up like I wanted. The big headache came when I tried to sync it with my work computer. Holy crap what a nightmare. The Blackberry took me all of 5 minutes to get set up for three different email accounts, including my corporate outlook email. The treo wasn't bad on the personal stuff but when it came to hooking it up to Outlook it just did. not. want. to. do. it. It took numerous calls to Sprint technical service (which didn't solve anything), and finally our IT firm came out and had to put an additional certificate on the device to make it sync. The worst part was day to day performance. It froze and crashed all the time. When I ended up roaming and it tried to sync email it'd shit out. When I was typing email it'd shit out. Battery life was terrible - I've only made it through a complete day without charging it once or twice. There was one day where I had to reset it 5 or 6 times... it went back to sprint. Sprint replaced it with a new unit and this one has been a bit more stable. However, this week it's been doing a lot of the same stuff the old one was doing. I've reset it once today already . I'm waiting for the Pre to get into my area and I'm going to go talk to them again, hopefully they'll take care of it and I'll get a phone that isn't a pile of shit. Long post short - I can't really recommend it. Edit - And while I said that, I will also say that (other than restarting it twice today...) I'm impressed at how much stuff it can do, and after getting used to navigating around it's easy to complete tasks. If it was stable I would be completely happy with it. But, it's not... Bring on the Pre!
  5. Saturday and Sunday are going to be USPSA type stages... but this is a revolver match . It won't be too bad for revolvers, array wise. However, it'd be a shame if we didn't have arrays that took all 6 shots that need to COUNT! Steel can be a bitch!
  6. Those of you running 12lb recoil springs and 17lb mainsprings - is this with a lightened slide and do you run buffs or not? I recently picked up a single stack in .40 and I haven't really had the chance to play around with springs in it yet (may have something to do with the -27* temps we had last week ). It originally had a 16lb spring in it and I ordered a 14lb and 12.5lb ISMI to try. I've got the 12.5lber in there now and will shoot it tomorrow. What I'm getting at is - will a 1911 with a full weight slide shooting major .40 (or .45... I "really" got bitten by the 1911 bug ) be alright with a 12.5lb recoil spring with no buff? Or should I run with the 14lber for now. Honestly I have no idea what mainspring is in either of them. I run federal primers in everything so I'm not too concerned about ignition.
  7. 1. I shoot revo in USPSA, IDPA, and steel matches 2. 7-8 times a month - 5 steel matches, 1 USPSA match, 1-2 IDPA matches 3. I just got very serious with the shooting game last fall, I've only participated in one major (level I) match, and one bigass steel match. However I will be hitting as many as time/shooting fund allows this year. Likely 7 or 8 larger matches, the vast majority of which will be shot with revo. 4. I will shoot the USPSA Nationals with revolver this year. 5. We are considering getting pin shooting up and going again in my area, other than that I would consider an ICORE match if one was closer to me. I would also think about trying bullseye with a revolver for fun. 6. I like shooting revo because I get all my brass back . One of the main aspects of revolver shooting that appeals to me is how much the dang thing teaches you about trigger control, recoil management, and most importantly - making each and every shot count. You just can't keep throwing rounds downrange in hopes of getting better hits... Here's the number one reason though - it's fun! I have more fun shooting revolver than any other gun. Not quite sure why but every time I pull the wheelgun out I'm more relaxed than when I pick up an autoloader. 7. Got that one covered already.
  8. I should have had the timer out for this video . The first day I got it (last Thursday... ) I went up and played around at my club's small indoor range for a bit - my reloads there shot to shot were 1.62-1.88, but I didn't have near the practice with it at that time. I would *guess* these reloads are coming in just under a second. That'd put the shot to shot time around 1.3, which I would be very happy to pull off in a match situation... which is a whole different level of difficulty . I'll do some practice on a par timer tonight and throw another video up.
  9. Thanks for the replies everyone . Catfish - That's one of the big things I've noticed myself doing to actually get around to hit the dang button. The muzzle movement is likely coming from that flip to the side. steel1212 and nashvillebill - I was actually getting ready for the (other) shooting sport... I figured this Kimber would make a nice ESP gun in addition to shooting single stack. We were supposed to have a match last Sunday but something about 8" of snow and 35mph winds put the kabash on that. I do definitely need practice with the USPSA rig, but I already had the IDPA gear on so I threw the vest in the corner and grabbed a camera. However, I do shoot production so I'm used to reaching around my back to grab those mags. What's the normal amount of mags for singlestack? I planned on running similar to my production rig - one in the gun and four on the belt, but likely having the barney mag easily accessable for an "oh shit" situation. Are most people running four or five mags on the belt?
  10. Not to try to steal Aristotle's thunder here, but I recently picked up a single stack and have been playing around with reloads. Note to self: do not sign up for the single stack classic without a gun... you'll end up buying instead of borrowing! For being basically the same idea it's quite a bit different than the G34 I'm used to... and just a *tad* different than reloading a revolver . Anyway, please pick my technique apart! Here's the video: Other than doing two reloads in rapid succession (and I need to stop practicing like this, it rarely if ever happens in an actual match and I don't want to develop bad habits) here are some things I've noticed about the single stack. It takes a lot of shifting around for me to hit the mag release. I want to stay uspsa AND idpa legal so that leaves oversized buttons out. The Kimber I picked up has an extended release, and while it does help it still takes a big flip to get it around where I can reliably release the mag. I still have to do this on my 34 but it's not quite as pronounced. However, it feels like I'm reestablishing a correct grip with my strong hand before the mag hits home. Second, even with the magwell I really have to pay attention to what I'm doing while indexing. Damn skinny mags! It's been really crappy here lately, I haven't had a chance to actually shoot this gun outside. I hope I can hit reloads on the move with it! What else am I missing?
  11. You guys going to be able to make it on Tuesday? As for the 617, a certain dremelsmith let me borrow his for a bit and it is a hoot to blast pintops with. BTW the sights were hitting pretty on for me Mike, a bit higher than the sub-sub six hold my High Standard has but nothing too out of line so I didn't move them around. I pulled a couple mid 4 runs with it but most were in the low-mid 5sec range . ...I must say it's certainly on my short list of things to pick up.
  12. yay central Iowa I started shooting revo (well, got serious and started shooting matches with it anyway) in September and I'm completely hooked. I'm going to run the wheelguns all next year save for for a match or two where they don't have a revo division or just to dust the Glocks off and get them dirty again. I also plan to make it to nats if at all possible... and I'm going to do everything in my power to make it happen!
  13. I have not dealt with Mr. Hearth (yet), but after talking with a number of people and using his product a couple times I'll have to pick some moons up. This shiny new 627 needs the good stuff... I will be contacting him soon .
  14. Chirpy I am using a Sidearmor holster for my 625. It's got a huge strut on the back that distributes weight well and holds the gun a bit closer to you. The cant is also easily adjustable so you can get the right angle for your draw. There's no getting around it though, they're heavy guns and you really need to crank down hard on good belt to make them stay upright. I wish I could use my CR Speed belt in IDPA :-/ Here's the holster Back when my 625 still had its hammer spur... and Jerry grips I've switched to Houge grips because they're a bit easier on my hands, but they REALLY caught up on my vest until I took one of the silly internal pockets out of the back. The grip would get inside the pocket and would not let go. That's another thing you can check on, if your vest has pockets everywhere it may be hanging up on one.
  15. Thanks for the encouraging words, everyone . Those of you who either shot the match or saw most of the stages from the vid, how would you break those down for a revolver? I'm still having a tough time thinking in sixes. Looking back on it there are a couple things I would do differently, but stages like the 4 arrays to hell (third in the vid) seemed to have a ton of standing reloads. That was the best way I could come up with for that stage. The Belly Flopper stage I tried to be sneaky to save a reload but it ended up being much slower that way. Man my reloading budget is going to go crazy this year... twice the lead downrange than my 9mm with every trigger pull! ...anyone know of a good deal on lead 230gr bullets?
  16. What a weekend! What a match! What a range! If you can't tell I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Milan. It was my first big match of any kind and second uspsa match with the revolver. And I had a blast! I've got video from a few stages. Please take a look and analyze what I need to work on other than shooting faster... you've got to make hits but I'm struggling to find the balance between speed and accuracy. There were a few stages with both revo and prod that I shot where I had most or all of the points available but was a bit slower, and my placing struggled because of that. And... I need to train my finger to move quicker on the revolver . The reloads were getting significantly more consistent towards the end of the day (note: the video is in stage order, not the order we shot). That's a huge time saver when you hit them reasonably well. Here's the video: I ended up placing thrid (out of four...), but had 87.70% of first's score. I was pretty pleased with my performance, as well as my decision to shoot revolver for next year. I had a lot more fun shooting the wheel than I did the Glock in production. And I even won one stage! And this is what happens when you don't realize your buddy has a camera when you're running through the stage before you shoot:
  17. Ummmm, you may have an extra chromosome... HAHAHAHA that was linked in the related videos to mine, I had to see what the hell it was and ended up copying the wrong link right link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7knl7j_dO0E
  18. OK, I timed my very first COLD reload tonight and came in under 3 seconds par time dryfire to dryfire on a timer. That was encouraging! Then I proceeded to reload like crap for a bit, then brought the camera out. See anything blatant that needs fixin? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7knl7j_dO0E
  19. Try not to run out of ammo next time... unshot targets don't do much for your score You shooting steel tomorrow?
  20. Oh it's too late already, I'm beyond hopelessly hooked at this point. In time I'm sure I'll be able to look at a stage and not be thinking 10+1 but it's certainly going to take awhile. I've only had the pleasure of shooting with Doug a couple of times and he was running autoloaders... from another thread it sounds like he's getting started with roundguns again though! Bob's going to have a bit more competition around here now . Carmoney still finds time to shoot but he was running an XD... I can't get him talked back into Glocks, if you could ever imagine that. I currently use a weak hand reload because I'm so used to going for the left side of my belt from shooting autos. I've practiced strong hand reloads for the "oh shit/just in case" reload and it just does not feel comfortable. I don't feel like I have good control over the gun. I haven't dropped it yet, but I don't like doing it during live fire for that reason. I'll stick to the weak hand reload for now. I'll take a short vid of my rather poor reload technique for you good guys to analyze sometime tonight.
  21. I finally did it. With the help of Mr. Perdue and Ranch Products I was all geared up for my first USPSA match shot with a revo yesterday (PS checks are in the mail . Thanks for your great products!). What a good time! I've shot steel and IDPA matches with my 625 but never *really* got into it until a couple weeks ago. A week ago I decided I'm going to shoot revo almost exclusively for the next year... and after Sunday's USPSA match I'm very glad I did! I've never had to analyze stages like that before and it was certainly an interesting experience. Nothing like "limited 6" to really have you make those shots count. Although, I did some figuring and I ended up with 96.66% of total available points... Maybe I need to shoot faster? Towards the end of the match I was approaching stages differently and really getting into it. I certainly know one thing I really, REALLY need to work on are reloads, because shooting a wheel gun you're reloading constantly. I'm struggling hard to get reloads consistently around 3 seconds. I had the cylinder actually close back up on me during movement a couple times ... That needs to be fixed. Practice, practice, practice! All in all, I'm extremely happy with my decision to focus on revolver. It's fun, I'm sure it's going to significantly help with my autoloader shooting down the road, and best of all... I got all of my brass back!!! Hope to see all of you at a match sometime in the future!
  22. My moonclips showed up yesterday and the holders came in the mail today, just in time to test them out this weekend . What a turnaround time! A big thanks to the folks at Ranch Products and Bob at North Mountain! PS ...Satisfied Customer Collection Agency - Don't worry, payment will go out first thing on Monday if I don't make it to the post office tomorrow
  23. I'm cleaning moonclips right now.
  24. Saturday's match went well! Turnout was a bit lower than expected but with all that's going on this time of year it's understandable. We had 19 entries overall and blasted a heck of a lot of steel. We were able to run all 8 stages - it was fun to have them set up with the proper plates at the proper distances... not just guessing and using random poppers . Match results can be obtained through email. PM me if you're interested. Thank you to all who made it out to shoot, and a HUGE thanks to Doug C. for making this match possible. Your time, proper steel, knowledge of course setup, and scorekeeping were very much appreciated. Thank you, Doug! Hopefully we can put on another Steel Challenge match next year!
